I hope all of you are ready for this time of year. It is one of my favorites. I ll be spending time with family and celebrating the birth of Jesus. Well, this is my last Prez Sez. I have enjoyed serving as president of EAA Chapter 172 for the past three years. My father served as president several years back and it has been an honor to serve in the same capacity. I hope I have served you well. I plan to continue to be involved with the chapter. I look forward to being able to relax at the meetings a little more. I hope to fly in more as well. This is a great chapter in a great organization! We all need to support EAA! Our aviation rights depend on it. Your new President will be Andy Lee. The other officers remain the same: Joe Britt as Vice President, Don Bush as Treasurer, and John Magnan as Secretary. Please continue to support them! They will need help with the meals as I will not be cooking as often! There are plenty of other great cooks in our chapter so I m sure we will continue to eat well. Please remember to get your dues in this month before they go up to $40. Our next regular meeting, our annual Christmas party, is Saturday December 12th. Hope to see you there. Please bring an unwrapped toy for a boy or girl to this meeting. We will be donating them to the Children s Medical Center at MCG. And just a heads up for January: Our meeting in January will be at Daniel Field in Augusta. Now again, that s January ; our December Christmas meeting is at the Pea Patch! Keep 'em flying! 2 Minutes of the Meeting for EAA Chapter 172 for November 14, 12:30 PM The weather was clear and cold in the early morning but rose to a high of 71 degrees by 2:00 PM. Before the meeting 25 members, their families, and visitors enjoyed a delicious meal of ham and sidedishes. Seven aircraft, including one helicopter, a Robinson R- 44 from New Holland, South Carolina, flew in. At 12:40 PM, former EAA 172 President Al Nodorft gave the invocation and everyone ate. Treasurer Don Bush then took over the meeting Chairman role and welcomed the guests and started a brief business meeting at 1:13 PM. We welcomed new member Gary Jones from Evans, Georgia. Sue Couch, Jean Hildebrant, and Sheila Connell set up the meal. Old Business: Joe Britt moved for the approval of the minutes for the October Boshears SkyFest. Nandi Shetty seconded the motion which was passed by the members. New Business: The dues for 2016 were discussed. The amount will again be $30 for one year. If current members pay after December 31, 2015, the dues will then be $40. This is an incentive to pay the dues on time! Al Nodorft already mailed postcards with a reminder to pay dues. Members also received a dues form in the November newsletter. Treasurer Don Bush collected dues from 39 members. There are currently 75 club members. We held the election for the 2016 EAA 172 officers. Our new president, Andy Lee, was elected for the 2016 term. Andy lives in Evans, Georgia. He said he is an electrical technician at Savannah River Plant. He is also a Boy Scout leader for Troop 15 in Evans, Georgia. Andy talked with the members about his activities as a scout leader. He has ten scouts in Troop 15. The other current officers were re-elected by acclamation. They are: Joe Britt, Vice President; John Magnan, Secretary; and, Don Bush, Treasurer. President-elect Andy Lee Virginia Bush said that the next social eat-out will be on January 28, Sheila Connell will be handling the details. There will be no social eat-out in November or December. Vice President Joe Britt brought up having the January 18th club meeting at Daniel Field. The Daniel Field avionics people would present a program about ADS-B, which is required for many aircraft by Members discussed this including the times for it and the auto parking. Joe said he would be getting further information about this possible change of meeting location before the next meeting. Virginia Bush moved to adjourn the meeting. Al Nodorft seconded the motion and those present approved the motion unanimously and the business meeting adjourned at 1:35 PM. Program: After the meeting adjourned, Vice President Joe Britt, assisted by former Vice President Nandi Shetti, presented a video program about the RV series of aircraft from an Internet download of past EAA video magazines. Flight line including the Robinson R-44 helicopter.

Because of all the holiday happenings in December, there will be no EAA 172 social "get together" this month. The next one will be January 28, 2016, when Sheila Connell will be handling the details. AVIATION QUESTION OF THE MONTH Answer to last month s question: You are 43 years old, and your last FAA medical exam was two months before your fortieth birthday. Is your third class medical certificate valid? According to the FAA: Yes. The answer hinges on the age at which you had your third class medical exam. Because you were under age 40 when you had your most recent medical exam, your medical certificate is good for 60 calendar months. Your next third class medical will be good for only 24 calendar months, since you'll be over 40 at the time of that examination. (See FAR ) Click for the text of FAR This Month s Question: You just earned your instrument rating and would like to purchase a home desktop training device so that you can stay current. You checked with the manufacturer and confirmed that you can log approaches for currency. Do you need to actually have a CFII present to log any of the approaches or instrument time for currency?
4 More Boshears Photos Here are a few more photos from the October Boshears SkyFest. They are from some areas you may not have visited. Also some photos are just over-all views for those who did not go to Boshears. Perhaps looking at the various vistas of Boshears might warm you up, now that it is somewhat cold here and the people in the photos are dressed for warm weather, less than two months ago! Great aircraft fly-overs all morning Inside the subsonex jet cockpit Want to learn about drones? There were plenty of them along with their owners in the modelers section. Rear view of a People Mover trailer loaded with visitors Plenty of military historical displays at Boshears Attendees are gathering around 1:00 PM to get a good view of the airshow. Volunteers had free meals at this food tent hidden in the corner of the Boshears periphery. Spectacular aerobatics during the airshow The People Movers moved throughout the Boshears environs from early morning to late afternoon providing a relaxing view of all the activities and displays.
5 NAVY RELEASES DEFINITIVE HISTORY OF NAVAL AVIATION WASHINGTON, D.C. The Navy has released online its recently-published, two-volume history of U.S. naval aviation. United States Naval Aviation by Mark L. Evans and Roy A. Grossnick is the Naval History and Heritage Command s fourth update to the original history, which was initiated in That first issue celebrated the first 50 years of United States naval aviation and this two-volume set commemorates the centenary. The latest update breaks U.S. naval aviation history into two volumes: Chronology and Statistics. This and other free Naval History and Heritage Command publications can be found here. Hard bound copies of the book are available from the Government Publishing Office Website. FAA IS ISSUING RULES FOR DRONES Everyone knew this would happen: All the bad boys who are flying their drones too high, in front of actual aircraft, over their neighbor's property, crashing into people, cars, and buildings have gone too far and pushed the rule makers to create some onerous rules. The FAA will be issuing some drone rules this coming week that will be difficult for them to enforce. For example, does your drone weigh 8 or more ounces? If so, you will be required to register it with the government. On November 23, 2015, the Federal Aviation Administration released a list of recommendations for how to better monitor recreational use of the machines. These were created by an FAA task force that was composed of 25 people, including representatives of drone makers, technology companies, an airline pilots association and government officials. Under the proposal, most drone owners would have to register the machines with the federal government, which would place the information in a national database, the first such requirements. In addition to entering the machines into a national database, the task force said, drone owners should display a government-issued registration number on each machine (like an N number, a tiny N number in some cases!). The group also recommended that owners submit their names and addresses, but said addresses and phone numbers should be optional. The rules would apply to recreational drones weighing half a pound 8 ounces to 55 pounds. The FAA would enforce registration rules and oversee the database. The task force recommended that the FAA carve out separate registration-related penalties for drones. Registration violations applying to any aircraft can now exceed $25,000. That amount was established to deter suspected drug traffickers and tax evaders but should not apply to users of small recreational drones, the groups said. The FAA is widely expected to approve the bulk of the recommendations this month, just in time for Christmas. Those who fly agricultural aircraft, which normally fly very low over crops, have come out very much in favor of a tighter control of drones which can and have interfered with agricultural dusting and spraying. ( Information adapted from New York Times 11/23/15 FAA Rules May Hover Over Holidays, NAAA in favor of registration, AOPA News DJI tightens drone flight limits ) DONATION OF AVIATION BOOKS RECEIVED We want to thank pilot and Boshears volunteer Dan Scukanec from Evans, Georgia, who gave EAA 172 a number of books. At the end of August, Dan wrote I have several aviation publications (Bingelis books, IFR instructional manual, AC B & 2B, sheet metal building basics, and a RV-9A plans book) plus a coupe of Vans practice kits I would like to place in the clubhouse for EAA 172's use. He left them at the clubhouse on August 29th. Note that we now need a Club Librarian to handle any of the publications EAA 172 has in cabinets and on shelves. Joe Miles, who recently passed away, handled that in the past. Let your new president, Andy Lee, know if you are interested in helping out with our books.
6 CAN YOU NAME THAT PART? AOPA has this fun quiz for the holidays! How much do you really know about the common and not-so-common parts of an aircraft? AOPA challenges you to test your aircraft parts knowledge with these close-up photos. You have five minutes to complete the 15-question quiz, so open your toolbox and begin! 10 NAME THAT PLANE American Electric Piranha The aircraft on the masthead of this newsletter is the only one in existence, and is privately owned. This airplane was the first one built as a prototype and the military never owned it so it was not destroyed. Only 6 other Piranhas were built. One crashed in a spin test and the other 5 were destroyed by the military as the airplanes were very difficult to fly and for other reasons. The Piranha is tested for 16+- Gs. The American Electric Piranha was a prototype American counterinsurgency aircraft built for the Vietnam war. Designed by Milt Blair and Dick Ennis in the early 1960s, it was built by the American Electric Corporation. Evaluation of the Piranha ceased following the death of Milt Blair in an unrelated aircraft accident. The prototype, N1518, is currently owned and flown by Milton Bud Pinkston in Dodge City, Kansas, where he shows it off at his EAA Chapter 377's monthly meetings. According to one of Bud Pinkston's friends, and a fellow EAA 377 member, Flying pattern on final, the Piranha has to be slipped in as you cannot see the runway because of the very long nose and pilot sitting so far back. The friend also related that some extra parts for the Piranha were added from the RV aircraft catalog. He wrote...this Piranha does have RV wheel pants on it as of last year, so can we call it an RV???????? Kinda... Also the friend referenced the EAA 377 Website for further photos.
