We know that SAM is later than usual this Autumn/Winter, but with the recent Integration project over the summer we realised that people s minds would be elsewhere, so we decided to hold back with your SAM. However... The Staff Association has remained active in it s technological forms, keeping you informed of any changes, events or discounts using these methods: UEASA has an extensive website with everything from the Constitution through to photo s and articles of past events. You can view details of the Committee online and print off booking forms for trips and events. The web link is shown on the bottom left of this page. And if you are a Facebook user, why not Like the UEA Staff Association page. We add info of new discounts on the group and any info on late bookings for trips and events. You can also add pictures of trips and events you have been on, as well as telling us what you think of the Staff Association and what events you would like. The SA also has an address (ueasa@uea.ac.uk) on which we circulate details of events and reminders about events. If you do not already receive these s and would like to, please h.mount@uea.ac.uk Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2012 The Staff Association would like to wish all it s members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2012! We have plenty for you to look forward to in 2012 with a great array of events and trips from a quiz night through to an astronomical night under the stars and a Harry Potter Warner Bros Tour! There are also our free events such as the Weekly Walks around campus and the monthly Book Swap. And, don t forget about our subsidised sports clubs if your new year resolution is to get fit! There is Badminton, Netball and Fishing which are suitable for all ages and abilities, and all are welcome. It s your Staff Association, so make it your new year s resolution to make the most of it!!! We look forward to seeing and hearing from you all in ~ From the Staff Association Executive and Social Committees

3 SAM December 2011 The AGM Page 3 The Staff Association AGM was held on Thursday 17 November 2011 in the Council Chamber. Drinks and nibbles were provided. There were no changes to the constitution proposed and no other particular matters to discuss. Any other business brought about a variety of discussions with members regarding knowledge of the website/facebook pages, the kind of events members would like to attend and how far ahead these events were organised and publicised. They were useful discussions and the Executive and Social Committee s have taken these away to discuss, proving the importance of the AGM and the opportunity for members to have their say. Thank you to all who attended. Minutes and reports are available on the UEASA website or from the Secretary. Discounts Galore! Remember to make use of your discount list when shopping or arranging days and nights out. There are a full range of local businesses on the discount list and we are continually working to add to these. Please remember that to claim any discounts of offers, you must produce your UEA Staff Association membership card. Full details of all discounts are available on the UEASA website. We are pleased to confirm that the following local businesses have kindly offered new discounts to members of the UEA Staff Association since the last issue of SAM: 10% discount Use code 86N Cloggs.co.uk 10% online discount Dyno-Rod Tel: (24 hours) Preferential Prices for: Fixed price unblock for a standard domestic blockage and Fixed price for CCTV inspections 85 Drive Me Crazy Driving Instructor Tel: Mobile: % discount New Leaf Will Writers Federation Garry Streeter Tel: Preferential rates on Lasting Power of Attorney ( 215) and Property Trust Wills ( 350) 10% discount (conditions apply) Wish.co.uk Gift Experiences & Experience Days 10% online discount Use code East Anglia Disclaimer: UEASA does not guarantee or recommend any of the businesses, services or products on the discount list. This is a trip for the whole family and includes a guided tour of the museum. RAF Museum London has a world-class collection and display of aircraft in several exciting and interactive exhibitions. The film & sound collection has some seven million feet of film dating from the pioneering days of aviation to the present day and the photograph collection contains about 250,000 images. The fine art collection is arguably the best collection of military aviation artwork in the UK and represents the people, aircraft, equipment and 'Service Life' of the RAF. The medal collection encompasses all orders, decorations and medals and compliments the uniform collection, which is particularly strong on the First and Second World Wars. There is a separate exhibition on at the time of our visit called Sport in the RAF. This examines the participation of service members throughout the RAF's history in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games - as well as the day to day importance that Sport has in RAF service life. Visit for more information. Members 14 each Non-members 16 each Children 11 each A visit to Kenwood House Saturday 19 May 2012 ~ departing UEA at and returning approx Set in beautiful landscaped parkland in the midst of Hampstead Heath, North London, Kenwood House (English Heritage) is one of the most magnificent visitor attractions in London. This elegant villa, remodeled by Robert Adam in the 18th century, houses a superb collection of paintings, including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner and Gainsborough, as well as the Suffolk collection of rare Elizabethan portraits. Don t miss the famous Adam Library with its beautiful friezes and grand colonnades. The landscape was designed to be seen from a planned circuit walk that provided a series of evocative views, contrasts and "surprises" for which Repton was well known. One of today's greatest and most delightful "surprises" is to find this gentleman's estate complete with farm, dairy, stables, kitchen garden, lakes, woods and meadows still surviving so close to the centre of London. Bordered on three sides by Hampstead Heath, the Kenwood estate, having been maintained as a designed landscape until the 1950s, has a different character from the Heath. Kenwood is Grade II* on the English Heritage 'Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest'. Visit for more information.
