Well on our first trip with the Staff Association we discovered it s a beautiful historic city that blends the old and the new, full of quirky shops in narrow arcades, shopping malls and a castle with a flower show. Some of us went on the guided tour including a boat trip around Tiger Bay which was amazing. The King s Treasure 7 The whole weekend the sun was hot and the sky was blue and cloudless. The coach party were friendly and welcoming, and Lynn the organiser was brilliant. What s not to like about a Staff Association trip? 2 Executive Committee News There have been the following appointments and changes on the Executive Committee: Sports Co-ordinator & Vice-Treasurer Sharon Weekley Sharon Weekley, who is already a Social Committee Member and runs the SA Netball Team, has recently joined the Executive Committee and will be working on building sports links in the new role of Sports Co-ordinator. Who's in the Spotlight? Lightening Photography offers wedding, portrait, and commercial photography throughout East Anglia and further afield when required. Capturing images that are contemporary and innovative is the essence of what we do. All images are always provided on DVD in order for clients to make their own prints. Established by UEA employee and Staff Association member Daniel Lightening in 2007, the business has grown steadily and due to this success he will be leaving UEA after 11 years service in May. Photography has played a massive part in my life since a very young age, freezing a moment in time and capturing all of the emotion contained in the scene is something that always amazes me. I feel extremely privileged to be able to earn my living doing what I love, something that I intend to never take for granted. I am completely self taught and enjoy experimenting with lighting techniques and composition. 5 Invitation to join the Retirement Association The UEA Retirement Association was founded in 1999 and currently has c300 members. Membership is open to all retired persons who have been employed by UEA and to their partners. Annual membership is currently 5 for an individual and 7.50 for joint membership. Membership of the Association gives one an opportunity to meet with excolleagues and friends at various events, including an Art Group, Book Club, Games Afternoon and a History Group which are usually held in The Pavilion, Colney Lane [near N & N Hospital]. Monthly Talks by visiting speakers and Barn Dancing are held in 10th Anniversary Celebration - cutting the cake (l-r) Alan Coddington (founder member) and Brenda Mace (chairman until Summer 2010). the new Costessey Centre, Longwater Lane, Costessey. We also have a monthly organised country walk, culminating with a pub lunch in winter and a picnic in summer. Popular day outings are arranged during the Spring and Summer. The plans for 2011 include trips to Clare and Lavenham and to Audley End and Saffron Walden. A five day annual holiday, staying in a Holiday Fellowship House, is arranged each Autumn with a venue suitable for walking. A second holiday, to appeal to a variety of interests, is arranged during the Summer. Holidays during 2011 will be to Sedbergh and Bournemouth. A detailed Newsletter [Renaissance] containing articles, reports on past activities and information about future events is sent to all members three times a year. Life Membership The Retirement Committee is not to be confused with becoming a Life Member of the Staff Association. To become a life member, you must have been a full member of the Staff Association for 5 years. Contact the Membership Secretary within 6 months of your retirement and you will be a member for life with the same rights as an Associate Member. Membership Queries? Page 6 Angling Club News Club News After a very successful season, including a 30lb carp at the end of March, the UEA Broad is now closed until June 1 st for fishing. UEASAAC have reviewed the permit rates for the coming 2011/12 season. It is 3 years since the last increase and with higher operational costs it has been necessary to increase prices for the coming season. Permits for Staff Association Members will now be 22 per season. New application forms and newsletters will be out soon. The club will be unveiling a new look website during the early part of the season, until then keep up with the news on facebook! Just search UEASAAC in the Groups section. Netball Club News Badminton Fridays at the Sportspark between 5pm and 6.20pm. With the help of the Staff Association, the netball team has been able to play whatever the weather with the booking of the indoor netball court. Now that the weather has improved, we have moved to the outdoor courts so we can have an excellent game of netball plus some glorious sunshine. Book Swap The oldest books are still only just out to those who have not read them ~ Samuel Butler Come along to the Staff Association Room in the Pavilion on the first Wednesday of each month from 12.15pm to 1.45pm and swap your books! Bring in the books you ve read, place them on the shelves and take away another book to read. It s as simple as that. The King's Treasure On a pleasantly warm and sunny Friday evening, we gathered at the Castle Gates Pub in Timber Hill to embark on another Staff Association Treasure Hunt. Aware of the date, April 1 st, we hoped that the challenge that we were to be set wouldn t cause us to feel too much like fools. The sets of questions were soon distributed and we were on our way. The amount of laughing that could be heard was evidence of the enjoyment. Although generally not difficult, the clues made us all search and I m sure everyone found out new and quirky bits of information about this part of Norwich. To add to the interest level, we were provided with extra gems of historical fact on the clues sheet. As self pointed scribe, I was able to read these, whilst the remainder of my team performed the harder task of serious searching. Confident of most of our offerings, we returned to the pub where we were able to do the final hunting amongst the wall displays. It was good to relax and enjoy a drink and a chat before the very substantial and tasty buffet. The answers were provided. No, we didn t win but felt that we had done reasonably well and had certainly had a great evening. Thanks to Lynn and Helen for their excellent organisation.
