3 A Word from your Chapter Directors As we sit here on Memorial Day weekend enjoying our families we hope you remember to take a moment to think about the men and women who have served, and are still serving, to protect our country. From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to Thank all of the service men and women, as well as any of you who have a loved one in the military. We had a great time at Niehaus and No no one from Chapter Z won the motorcycle. Jim and Pam Bolding did purchase a new 2014 Goldwing and I must say, I m not sure who was more excited Jim or Pam. Pam will now be able to ride the trike which she has missed. We were also given the pleasure of having a new couple, Jon & Sandy Evans, ride with us to Niehaus as well as the May Dinner Ride to Ginny s. We hope they enjoyed themselves and we hope to see them more in the future. Please welcome Jon & Sandy if you should see them. We have a full summer of riding and activities planned for Chapter Z. Some of the upcoming events for June will be sammich rides to Hannibal, Missouri and Garden of the Gods. The Garden of the Gods ride will most definitely be an all-day ride but it will be FUN. We will be stopping for ice cream before we get back and if you like ice cream you don t want to miss this stop. We will be going to the Drive-In in June. At this time we are not sure what is showing but this is always a FUN time. We would also like to mention the August Ride for Kids; a charity ride for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. This is a ride very dear to the Goldwingers hearts and we will be out there showing our support. We hope you plan to attend. We hope to see all of you on future rides and, if you decide to ride alone, please be safe!!! 4 Roamin with the Ruegges Riding season is in full swing and Mother Nature has been very cooperative with our riding schedule. We had our first sammich ride of the year to The Trail of Tears State Park in Jackson, Missouri. There were 16 riders in attendance and we had a great ride. Next we were off to Litchfield, Illinois for Niehaus Day, but not before we all met at Cracker Barrel for breakfast. After shopping for our safety chrome we stopped in Prairie Town for our fried chicken dinner. The only disappointment of the day was that no one from Chapter Z won the new Goldwing! We had a great turn out for our monthly dinner ride to Ginny s with 35 people and 23 bikes. It was a beautiful evening to visit. Last but not least, we had an impromptu ride to Keyesport, Illinois with 10 bikes and 16 people. We ate at Keys on Lake Carlyle and were joined by Donna s mom Peggy! We also ran into several members from Illinois O who were there on a ride. Neither chapter knew that the other would be there. It just goes to show you that GWRRA members know where to find good food!!! Please watch your closely for last minute impromptu rides!!! 5 THE EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY Can you believe this weather? The time for riding and traveling on our Goldwings has arrived. Many of us have plans for that first motorcycle vacation; or the next motorcycle vacation. I want to talk about trailers, the little guy we pull behind us. If this will be your first time pulling a trailer I suggest you talk to a veteran rider for some pointers. Rider Ed offers a trailering seminar. The knowledge is there; seek it. If you own an older trailer think about upgrading your lights from bulb to LEDs and do not forget the little light that illuminates your license plate. Check to make sure your tires are in good condition and they are properly inflated. Do not forget your spare tire (good condition and properly inflated). When loading your trailer balance the load and check the tongue weight. Check the wheel bearings as they may need to be repacked. I f you do not know how to perform this maintenance, ask for help; this is knowledge you need to know. Sara and I carry a complete kit to change out a bad wheel bearing. The kit consists of the following: inner and outer wheel bearings, inner and outer races, inner and outer seals and a cotter key. You can get a kit from most auto parts stores. You will need the tools to perform this task, along with the tools needed to change a tire. Carrying spare bulbs is also a good idea. Make sure you hook up your safety chains when you are pulling your trailer. REMEMBER THIS YOU WILL NOT STOP AS FAST WHEN PULLING A LOADED TRAILER. Curves should be taken with caution as a trailer can push the rear end of your bike in some situations throwing you out of control. You also need to be more aware of your speed in the rain. This article is not meant to scare you from trailering; it is meant to inform you. Most of the time you will not even know your trailer is there, EXCEPT at gas stations. WATCH out for the islands around the pumps and allow enough clearance. Also, remember when passing you are now longer than usual. With all this being said, have fun on your trips and vacations. 6 Our Motto... Share the Road! Our Mission... To Facilitate A Reduction In Motorcycle Crashes With Other Motor Vehicles. Quick tips from MSF Be as conspicuous as possible, Wear bright clothing. Always have your headlights on and use your high beam or an after market headlight modulator during the day. Take an approved rider training course.learn how to maneuver your motorcycle in normal and emergency situations and practice braking and swerving maneuvers often. Remember safe riding depends as much on the mental skills awareness and judgment as it does on the physical skills of maneuevering the machine;respond early to possible hazards instead of having to react instantly to an emergency. Pretend you're invisible. If you assume others on the road can't see you and any car that can hit you will hit you, you will ride in a hyper-aware mindset and you will learn to notice every detail of your surroundings. Making you more responsible for your safety and you will ride more defensively. 7 Member Spotlight Dale Yankey When did you join GWRRA: 1998 What do you like best about being a member of GWRRA: The friends I ve made, the rallies, the FUN and education! Positions you have held in the Chapter/District/Region: Member What was your favorite ride: Actually, any ride to the Smokey Mountain Area, Knoxville Wing Ding, etc. How long have you been riding motorcycles and what was your first bike: I ve been riding since the early 1970 s. My first bike was a beautiful blue Honda 450 SL (1973). When did you get your first Goldwing and what was it: Terrie and I bought our first Goldwing in 1996 from Twin Cities Honda. It was a beautiful Pearl Blue 96 Interstate. What do you currently ride: I recently triked my 2004 GL1800. That should allow me to continue to safely ride well into my 70 s, or 80 s - what ever! How did you and your spouse meet: Sondra and I met on Christian Mingle and we have been together 2+ years. Children/Grandchildren/Pets: I have children; 2 girls and a boy and six grandchildren; 3 girls and 3 boys and a 1 great grand daughter with another in the oven. Sondra had 1 son and 2 grandsons. Hobbies/Interests outside of GWRRA: I am a Mason and a Shriner. My hobbies involve guns, shooting and reloading. If you can shoot it or ride it - I like it!
