The Miniature Train Club Gold Coast Inc. has a place for you if you are interested. We meet monthly as a club and more often socially. We attend various shows throughout South-East Queensland annually as well as hosting Miniature Trains on the Coast. Wives, girlfriends, and partners are included in MTCGC membership and often participate in what we do, or meet socially amongst themselves for coffee, lunches, and movies as they see fit While the men talk trains so to speak. Layout modules often have a partner s hand involved as well and female members are more than welcome. 2 Hello and welcome to all, The Miniature Train Club Gold Coast Inc. is proud to present our fifth annual model train show on the Gold Coast and this time expanding to include many other hobbies as we feel that there is such a vast overlap of resources, skills, and materials within each of the.hobbies This year sees a new step taken away from the Ashmore PCYC as the venue was undergoing many structural changes that would have made it probably unworkable for our purposes with restricted access points to the rooms and a more congested pedestrian traffic (and therefore dangerous by fire risk standards) with what would have been available to us. So this was a little perturbing for us and we were left with the option of bringing you a much smaller show (less work for us) or move to a totally new venue. Since we had developed five years of loyal patrons who had come to all our previous shows and they are just the ones who have said hi and pointed it out to us along with new patrons every year, we felt we owed it everyone involved not to take that step backwards. Hence our new venue at A.B. Paterson here and hopefully a relationship with the school that is every bit as good as what the PCYC afforded with Sgt. Green doing everything he could to accommodate us when we were there. Lets see how this works out for all involved shall we? So, the venue actually gives us more room which makes it a bigger show in the offering with more to see and a bit of diversity; everything being about trains. There will also be cars, aeroplanes, and boats perhaps (May have cancelled), and a craft stall! The Miniature Train Club Gold Coast Inc. aims and objectives are to bring together people of the Gold Coast and surrounding Regions who have an interest in any aspect of Model Railways, in the endeavour to show that Model Railroading is Fun within a friendly helpful environment, to encourage and develop members skills and abilities within the hobby of Model Railways. Where to start in the model railway hobby can be confusing. It is not the same for everyone but it is safe to say that for most it is the train set. The main advantage of sets for the newcomer is the plug n play value; that is all the items needed for an immediate start are there such as a power source, track and your train! Train sets are also cheaper than buying the items individually as the manufacturers want you to start! Don t try and create a masterpiece straight away. Your first set will almost certainly be disposable if you continue on in the hobby. (By all means keep the set as nostalgia if you wish!). This is a good thing as it allows play time and time to work out where you go next. Some items in some sets are made to a lesser detail so bear this in mind. This is a second reason to view sets as disposable. There are two types of power systems; analogue and DCC. Analogue is the traditional way and is best described as controlling the track while the newer DCC controls the trains. Both are acceptable but if unsure club members or your retailer will explain in greater detail. What scale? Again this up to you but most start in 00/H0 as it s the worlds most popular and seems to get the balance right between too fiddly and too unwieldy. 00 is British and H0 the rest of the world. They both run on the same track however. What country? Personal taste will determine this but in train sets Britain, Europe and North America are best catered for. In Britain the main brand is Hornby which gives you a wide selection of train types. In Europe sets are made by Roco, Fleischmann, Piko, Lima and Jouef. Life-Like, Atlas, Model Power and Bachmann are the main ones for America. How do I extend it? Hopefully the shop you bought it from can guide you but the members of this club will certainly help with advice. Track plan booklets are usually obtainable and don t forget the internet! 23

We are always looking for dedicated model train enthusiasts interested in trains, modelling, attending shows, and of course, hosting one annually. STAND 38: GLINTOWN IN N-SCALE (LAYOUT) Displayed by GRANT LINNING Is a modular layout built to the popular Australian T-Trak standards. Using Kato track, individual modules can be altered or added to change or extend the layout. This layout includes a city scene with passing loops and sidings and a locomotive depot. A variety of trains can be seen. aglinning@bigpond.com STAND 39: THE WAYNE BRANCH IN HO (LAYOUT) Displayed by NATIONAL MODEL RAILWAY ASSOCIATION (NMRA) The Layout was named The Wayne Branch and was designed and built as a light-weight, portable, end-to-end switching layout, displaying various industrial areas. Over the length of the branch, each module is connected railroad-wise by a mainline and a parallel switching track. Trains are controlled by NCE DCC which allows infinite flexibility in the movement of trains. The layout being end-to-end, with standardised module interfaces, has numerous benefits. Space required to display is effectively halved, individual modules can be built to any length, modules can be displayed in any order, and in any number. In practice, Bob Brown s Steven s Yard, a six spur storage yard is always at the left hand end of the layout, with the remaining modules on display extending to the right in no particular order. However, experience has shown that Bob Cuffe s Mohave Flats with a small extension is an ideal fit for the right-hand end. The remaining operational modules are Paul Skehan s Venables and Ian Venables Milora. Modules are also currently owned or being constructed by others. The layout concept has been proven over a number of years with the number of modules displayed varying between two and five, depending on module availability and space allocated STAND 1: ENTRANCE AND ADDMISSION Manned by MTCGC members, family, and volunteers. STAND 2: LADIES A TRACK ED TO CRAFT (CRAFT STALL) Our Ladies have spent many enjoyable hours sitting behind the scenes at train shows, while the boys play trains. To keep ourselves busy while here or at home, we do some sort of craft (usually knitting or hand sewing). Speaking for myself I love to make different things and use my leisure time doing just that. As a result we have created lots of items we feel would be of interest to the Ladies & young girls. This year the boys have very kindly allotted us some of their precious space to display & sell our wares. We are hoping with your support it will become a regular event. Among the items you can expect to see are, knitted tea cosies, gloves, dolls outfits, doggie coats, furry woodland animals, embroidered cloths, and Christmas decorations. Looking forward to seeing you all at the show! STAND 3: FRANK MITCHELL S STEAM TRAIN ART (TRADER) Steam train art by Frank Mitchell who sells original oil paintings and framed prints on canvas. Frank studied art at the National Art School, Sydney following his career as a bridge builder until a construction accident in 1980 had him painting full time. Frank s early work focused on the Australian landscape and now includes his love of steam trains. He developed a reputation and success in this field, being published in railway art books worldwide. Frank s son Peter frames all his art and prints, thus keeping the prices at a very reasonable rate. EFTPOS is available and Lay-bys accepted on a 20% deposit balance due over 12 months. 4 Kits Parts Bogies Wheels Locos Wagons Loads 4 STAND 36: NO NAME IN N-SCALE (LAYOUT) Displayed by MERVYN POWELL and EDDIE STAVLEU No Name is owned and built by Mervyn and Eddie. An N-scale layout designed on the T-TRAK system of modules that make up a portable model train layout. The T-TRAK system is very versatile, from a small 750 x 1070mm size it can be extended to any size and virtually any shape by simply adding more modules which also come apart simply for easy storage. For more information, ask the operators. No Name is based upon a real town in Colorado U.S.A on highway I-70 and the main eastwest rail line. STAND 37: LOGAN BEND IN N-SCALE (LAYOUT) Displayed by WAYNE ARIEL Freelance; Logan Bend is a constantly changing N sale modular layout and is operated by individuals from the Logan Districts Model Railway Club (LDMRC) who join together for shows and events. Logan Bend depicts a variety of scenes for Queensland Country. The member s rolling stock ranging from typically Queensland to American profiles. The exhibition layout is based on an adaptive Bend track module system with each module depicting an individual scene chosen by its owner to showcase their skills. The purpose of the Region is to promote, stimulate, foster, and encourage by all manner and means, the art and craft of model railroading and the preservation of the hobby's history, science, and technology. The Region accomplishes its purposes through its Divisions, publishing the MainLine (a quarterly magazine), holding Conventions and by promoting the NMRA Achievement Program. 5 STAND 32: TURNPIKE LANE IN HO/OO (LAYOUT) Displayed by HARRY KENNET British Prototype; The Piccadilly Line has two branches from Uxbridge in Middlesex and the other from Heathrow Airport. Turnpike Lane is on the north side of London between Manor House and Wood Green and features a Tube station of the London underground with a streetscape above c1950s. A layout idea which is not often modelled, but done so in a fantastic fashion here. This year Turnpike Lane is attached to a rural farming scene! Stand 33: WILLIAMSTOWN IN ON30 (LAYOUT) Displayed by WILLIAM ROHR A freelance On30 Australian small outback town set in the 1950s- 1960s. It displays American and Aussie trains freight and passenger. 6 Models N More (+61) STAND 29: HAGLEY IN N-SCALE (LAYOUT) Displayed by ROBERT HENDRIKS Hagley was originally named as a fictitious town but further research showed there is a Hagley township in the English Lower Midlands, two in New Zealand, and three in Tasmania. This layout is not a scale replica of any of the above towns, but simply a depiction of a small town with an industrial area and farmlands. STAND 9: RIPPITS (TRADER) Our concept is that we aim to bring our passion for Radio Control (RC) models to our store, sharing our knowledge and advice with our customers. Rippit was originally set up as a one-stop hobby shop to serve the people of the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Northern Rivers, however our passion for RC cars, boats, airplanes and helicopters is so infectious that people from around the world began contacting us. Watch as trains wind up, around and through the mountains. STAND 31: ROSE VALLEY (LAYOUT) Displayed by CHLOE ROSENBURG This layout was built by Chloe Rosenberg, saying, I am 13 years old and have been into trains since the age of 4. Based on a town called Maryborough. A fantastic example of the hobby being for virtually all ages and not just for the boys. Chloe and her parents are regulars at shows such as the Brisbane Model Train Show, the Toowoomba Model Train Exhibition, and of course Miniature Trains on the Coast and are members of the NMRA-AR. 7 STAND 26: BRENDALE IN HO (LAYOUT) Displayed by RAILWAY MODELLERS CLUB OF QUEENSLAND INC. A modular HO layout built by the RMCQ Inc., to cater for the exhibition needs of our members. The layout has been designed to run both DC and DCC locomotives on separate tracks simultaneously, and while it has a basic Australian look and feel, trains from all around the world and in particular, the US and UK can also be seen. It is based on a small country town with a main station with passing loops, engine facilities and some small local industries. This allows trains to always be on display with continuous operation on the mainline or shunting in a siding or loco area. Some of the industries or commercial premises displayed are strong supporters of our club. The layout is transported in a purpose designed trailer to ensure protection and that the layout only needs one member to transport. STAND 27: FORREST VALLEY (LAYOUT) Displayed by JAMES FORREST: This N scale layout depicts scenery and track from anywhere in the world. The trains pass through cuttings, farmland, bridges and tunnels, a spiral mountain over a lake passing a town railway yards stations and industrial buildings, there is streets, building and yard lighting plus signal lights visible. The trains run on three levels adding visual excellence for children. Your child is welcome to control a train please ask the attendant. STAND 28: PINE RIVERS IN N-SCALE (LAYOUT) Displayed by RAILWAY MODELLERS CLUB OF QUEENSLAND INC. Is an N-scale modular layout loosely based on the NTRAK standards. This layout, by the RMCQ Inc. is always under construction, but so far includes a Golf Course, Engine Servicing Facilities, Wheat Loading Silos and a Cricket Field. This year the main feature is the Canyon River scene with township and light industry. The layout has been revamped with a crossing loop for trains and is automatically controlled by signals. The branch line with logging trains (of the 1880s) features Shays, Climax s, Heislers, Railmotors and small goods trains. Mobile: STAND 25: BARINA JUNCTION (LAYOUT) Displayed by REDLANDS MODEL RAILWAY GROUPS Barina Junction is the Redlands Model Railway Groups new layout. It is a modular layout in OO (1/76) scale with track clearances to allow HO (1/86) and S (1/64) scale trains to run. As this is a group layout, expect to see a mixture of Australian, British, European and North American trains. Although Barina was a station on the Cleveland Line until 1960 s, the scenery does not depict a specific place. Layout appearance changes regularly. The modular T-TRAK layout allows extra modules to be inserted into the layout to look different from time to time. 11 MTCGC T MTCGC TRIVIA The Miniature Train Club-Gold Coast Inc. is a 100% NMRA-AR club. That means that members are effectively members of two clubs. STAND 16: KINGSRIDGE IN HO (LAYOUT) Displayed by LOGAN & DISTRICT MODEL RAILWAY CLUB Freelance; a generic layout carrying both HO and HOn3½. It depicts a fictitious interchange between the two gauges, incorporating a main line station and sidings with industrial premises. The layout has been built by club members over the last 5-6 years. STAND 17: CHILDREN S THOMAS U-DRIVE IN HO (LAYOUT) Displayed by AUSTRALIAN MODEL RAILWAY ASSOCIATION (AMRA) This is one of those perennial favourites and was truly missed when it couldn t make the show last year. Children of all ages can drive a train (yes, which includes dad if there are no kids driving or if they need help...) Thomas or one of his friends on this layout. PO Box 352 Zillmere, Queensland STAND 14: NOTCH HILL SUBDIVISION (LAYOUT) Displayed by JOHN BURT Is a fictitious line that is loosely based on the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the 1970 s and 1980 s. The layout is made to T-TRAK modular standards in N scale. Some of the scenes are based on real places and experiences. Some place names are real. The trains are run by digital command control, often there are multiple trains on the same track! Please ask any questions you may have about this layout. Check John s layout website at:- STAND 15: COLORADO AND SOUTHWESTERN (LAYOUT) Displayed by NORTHERN RIVERS MODEL RAILROADERS As the name depicts the layout is based in SW USA and Colorado. The layout is HO scale with an Hon3 track running thru length of the layout with return loops at each end. The layout is DCC (Digital Command Control) operated by a Lenz system and cup radio controlled. Farming and mining are the two main industries and most US railroads can be seen. The two Hon3 tracks is Rio Grand 3 foot gauge track and trains. MTCGC TRIVIAT AR Kits have supplied the show with a limited number of show wagons. STAND 18: IPSWICH MODEL RAILWAY CLUB T-TRAK IN N-SCALE (LAYOUT) Displayed by a bunch of fun people Freelance: This N scale layout is made up of T-TRAK standard modules. The size of the modules allows one to work on and display small dioramas which can be changed around to suit the areas displayed in. Members can model any scene on their modules and are encouraged to come up with new ideas. The modules also can be easily stored and transported. The member s modules are registered with the T-TRAK Australia Group. There are T-TRAK groups all around the world.
