2 St Luke's Railway Modelers Club We are a Christian group interested in model railways. We cater for varied prototypes in H0/OO and N scale with an interest in Hornby products. As a Club we work to develop our Club layouts, and improve our modeling skills and knowledge as well. We meet on the first and third Saturday of every month at St Luke's Anglican Church, at 3pm our next meeting will be on the 6 th of December. Some of our activities include modelling clinics and attending exhibitions with our Club and member layouts so we can share our enjoyment of the hobby with others as well. There are some great advantages in joining our Model Railway Club. As well as having a Christian fellowship with our Club members, you can pick our brains, as we are more than willing to pass on any wisdom we have gained. This way your train set will soon turn into a railway modelling empire Then you can pass on your wisdom to help others too. Interested? Linsay Dousha Award This award commemorates the late Linsay Dousha, one of the founding members and is presented to the layout which, in the opinion of the judges, has the best scenery. Visitors Choice Award The Visitors Choice award goes to the display that receives most visitor votes; it is traditionally a railway collectible, and this year s award is framed photo of locomotive 3801, donated by the Wilson family.

4 All the modellers presenting displays are proud of their creations and welcome questions about the layouts, their construction and operation. Layouts in the Hall 1. Linden Ford Gary Ruming This OO gauge layout was built as a demonstration layout for an online model railway club. It is built from recycled materials and the base is an old wardrobe footing. All the track is second hand and the structures are built from a mix of card, wood and styrene. The trees are made from a twisted wire skeleton covered in gap filler and coated in scatter material. 2. Half Pint Creek Chris Fraser This is a freelance American outline switching layout in HO scale. It depicts the rather run down Lostan Foundry and is set in rugged terrain on the west coast. All the buildings are scratch built from cardboard and bits from the junk box. Operations centre around local freight and passengers and the movement of traffic from the foundry to the wharf. 3. Class 38 Pacific Meccano locomotive No John Thompson This model of the well known class 38 pacific loco of the NSWGR was first built in between 1953 and It was completely rebuilt in 2003 and every part was overhauled. The reconstruction took some 300 hours. The real 3830 was first steamed in Red River Canyon Daniel Thompson This compact N scale American freelance layout feature a folded dogbone track layout giving a good length of run in a small area. The two viewing sides maximize the scenic development which is further enhanced by the multiple track levels in the canyon area. The highly detailed scenery creates several focus points making the layout seem much larger than it is. 5. Electric Car Sheds Historic Electric Traction This HO scale New South Wales model is based on the now demolished Punchbowl car sheds in Sydney. It showcases the single deck suburban trains commonly remembered as the Red Rattlers. The scenery is based on typical Sydney suburbia of the era as a traveler would witness from the train window.

5 6. Midway Ian Williamson This model of a small city is of no particular place and features the CBD and the very efficient tram service from the suburbs. Most of the buildings are by Tomix and Tomy and the trams are from the same makers. The layout is automatically controlled by diodes using a block system and an automatic train reverser. 7. Bushtown Georges River Model Railway Club An N Scale Australian layout that features NSW and Victorian trains and represents a typical branch line in the South West Slopes and Snowy mountains area. The buildings are models of actual structures in NSW. The stations act as the storage and fiddle yards for the layout. It is DCC controlled using the NCE Powerhouse system. 8. Kidzpower North Shore Railway Modellers This layout has been developed by the junior modellers and was started in After exhibiting it in March it was decided to extend the layout, and this is the first showing of the extended setup. Up to four trains can be run at once. Slideshow Layouts in the Church Building This year s slideshow presents images from the camera of club member Robert Evans and features contemporary rail transport, including heritage items. All the photos have been taken since 2000 and are mostly in the Hornsby district with some from further afield. It also includes a few shots of trams and the Sydney monorail. 9. Bridport South Western Peter Betts This unique 4mm scale layout features both standard (18mm) and broad gauge (28mm) tracks. It is set in 1890 and features complicated handmade mixed gauge trackwork that is shared by trains from the London and South Western and Great Western railways. The locomotives and 90% of the rolling stock are scratch built and some are more than 50 years old. There are also many working mechanical devices that add interest to operations. The layout is operated in sync with the recorded commentary.

6 10. Umatilla Valley Railroad Milton Brown The Umatilla River Valley and Columbia Plateau are in Western USA. The N Scale Umatilla Valley Railroad is a fictitious short line that connects with the mighty Union pacific Railroad. The model is set in 1950/60 s and features stock from all over western and central USA. 11. Legeauxland Fun Pier Richie Dulin The ever changing Legeauxland theme park returns to St Luke s, this year in Fun Pier form and featuring several new attractions, all built from LEGO bricks. Take your time to spot various famous characters in LEGO form, and don t forget to try your hand at driving one of the rides! 12. Defty St Luke s Model Railway Club This is the club s HO scale modular layout. It allows members to run long trains that may not fit on their smaller home layouts. Despite its size it packs away into a cupboard when not in use. This year it features a mix of Australian, American and British trains. Rob Evans will also be running his OO scale live steamers at regular intervals. 13. Gennigael Rob Evans A traditional OO scale terminus to fiddle yard design it portrays an imaginary branch line terminus which connects to the ex-cambrian line from Moat Lane to Three Cocks Junction in the 1930 s. Locos and stock include some former Cambrian Railways items as well as other hand-me-down oddities that typically ran on such lines at that time. 14. Audreyville Rob Evans The layout was conceived as a portable layout to take when visiting my granddaughter (who loves Thomas and friends). It unfolds and is designed to be used on the floor with the child able to crawl over it when playing. The buildings are relocatable and all items have been pre-loved. Audrey loves it.

7 15. Penguins Halt Jenny Evans This layout is the U-Drive It has an animal theme and has been designed to be fun to watch. Children are welcome to try their hand at driving the trains. Can you work out how the giraffes know when to duck? See the penguins enjoying the roller coaster. 16. Appletree vale John Byrne and Lachlan This HO layout was built by the late Peter Legatt of Asquith Model railways and was developed by one of St Lukes junior modelers with assistance from his grandfather. It is a good example of the next step from a basic train set. You will see Johns collection of trams as well as various Australian, New Zealand and British trains running. 17. Thomas Rick Lovelock This layout is made up of three modules Gifts from Ricks daughters. The train lift scoop and crane are all driven by a single motor unit powered by 1 AA battery. See what Thomas and his friends get up to! 18. Pangbourne Ridge Rick Lovelock This scenic layout was built by the late Lindsay Dousha and features a narrow gauge HOe scale logging operation in the steam to diesel transition period. All the buildings were scratchbuilt by Lindsay. The layout shows the process from logging through the milling and processing of the timber into finished consumer products 19. JB Mining John Bell This freelance layout in Hoe scale features a mine, quarry, crushing plant and cement works. The quarry is reaching the end of its working life and nature is starting to take over again. The local passenger train still runs for workers and tourists. The track winds its way through narrow gorges and tunnels with limited clearance keeping the locos and stock small

8 - A word from our Minister - Welcome to the grounds of St. Luke s Hornsby Heights for what I believe to be our biggest ever annual Model Railway Exhibition (in terms of floor space, anyway). We ve done some building work in the last 12 months (those who were here last year might remember the hole in the ground where the old hall used to be), and so now we ve got more room than we ve ever had. And so the good news is that this year we have 19 layouts on display. I reckon it will take hours to get around and look at everything. But as nice as our new building is, it s not the most important building work we ve done at St. Luke s in the last 12 months. The most important building work is in the lives of people. Here at St. Luke s we re on about building community, a community where we support each other in our common faith in Jesus. We do that through our Sunday services, we do that in our small groups, we do that in our children and youth activities, we do that in the fun social times we spend together. Why not come along one Sunday and check us out? Or just have a chat to the friendly people at our St. Luke s stall.
