TBA) parking lot, Centerville Carpooling drivers: Explore Amish Country 10:45 AM Serpent Mound State Park Filled with mystery and surrounded by nature s splendor, the largest and most famous Indian effigy mound in North America awaits. Serpent Mound is one of the oldest unsolved mysteries challenging scientists to unravel the mystique of the winding earthen snake some 1,300 feet long, 25 feet wide, 5 feet high and more than 1,000 years old. The Serpent Mound Museum hosts captivating illustrations and stories of the mound, the theories behind its history. The park itself includes other ancient mounds and a breathtaking view of a geological anomaly, five miles in diameter, believed to have been caused by a meteorite or volcanic explosion, despite the lack of any volcanic or meteorite evidence. Much like the Great Serpent slithering toward the edge of this grand bluff, it remains a mystery. 11:45 AM The House of Phacops (937) St. Rt. 41, Locust Grove, Ohio Just 4 miles south of Serpent Mound is this rock shop that encourages the education of paleontology, earth science, and ancient history, by sharing information and geological specimens. 12:15 PM Keim Family Market (937) (lunch) 2621 Burnt Cabin Road (at intersection of Hwy 32), Seaman, OH The Keim Family located in Adams County in They have specialized in homemade pies, but also have candy, preserves, cinnamon rolls, homemade noodles, peanut brittle and loaves of bread. 5 Ohio Amish Country now includes Southwestern Ohio. In 1975, Amish families moved from the heart of Ohio s Amish Country in Holmes County and settled in rural Adams County. Amish began selling baked goods along side Route 32. From there, the Miller and Keim family businesses grew from there humble beginnings to Amish superstores selling baked goods, bulk foods, full line delis with meat and cheese selections and almost anything you can imagine being made from wood. The bulk food selection includes spices and baking ingredients plus an enormous variety of canned goods, sugar-free foods and candies. Their indoor and outdoor furniture lines include hutches, bedroom sets, chairs and gliders. In addition, they hand build gazebos, children play sets, footbridges and even buildings. (The Amish merchants are very friendly but do not like their picture to be taken.) 6 Sunday, September 18th Explore Carillon Park Dayton 11:45-12:15 ARRIVAL Dayton Concours d Elegance (Met at hallway by ticket center, event ends at 4 PM) We will have a short presentation for the group, but then will break into small groups to explore the park. At 1:00 Dr. Larry Weinstein will perform each original concert. He is an accomplished carillonneur and will play a live concert of the bell tower chimes, which it the largest carillon in Ohio. Carillon Park presents Dayton s rich heritage of creativity and invention. Enjoy the 65-acre campus with 25 special exhibit buildings and structures to explore. See the actual 1905 Wright Flyer III, Dayton-made NRC cash registers, vintage automobiles, train cars & bicycles, and a 1930 s print shop. Examine and admire 200 of the finest classic and antique automobiles and motorcycles in the country, amidst the beautiful and welcoming setting of the region s premier outdoor museum. This year s event will feature the automobiles of 1911, the Roaring Twenties and cars celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, all nestled among the historical buildings and exhibits of Carillon Historical Park. Guests will be treated with food, live music, and historical demonstrations in addition to the chance to see beautiful cars and motorcycles up close and personal. 7 Monday, September 19th Air Force Museum 9:30 AM Stivers School for the Arts 1313 East 5th Street, Dayton, (Bill Pflaum) This is a Dayton public school for middle and high school students. It is a magnet school that focuses on education in the visual and performing arts. It has been recognized nationally for its academic accomplishments. It is the highest performing Dayton school, with test scores that can be compared to suburban high schools. 12:00 PM National Museum of the US Air Force 1100 Spaatz St., Wright-Patterson AFB, OH (937) I have arranged a docent to provide a guided tour for 2 hour tour. Thereafter group can split into smaller groups and continue touring, watch an IMAX movie, or leave to shop or do other activities. The National Museum of the United States Air Force is the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world. The museum uses both chronological and subjective layouts to tell the exciting story of aviation development from the days of the Wright brothers to the Space Age. Exhibits include more than 300 aircraft and missiles, plus family-oriented and historically interesting aeronautical displays. More than 1 million visitors from around the world come to Ohio each year to tour this unique free attraction. 5:30 PM Dublin Pub 300 Wayne Avenue, Dayton, OH (Jay Teiber) Jay Teiber arranged for members of our group to order food items at 1/2 price! He is also providing musical entertainment: a portion will include not only Irish folk songs, but also a few from Australia and USA. Maybe we can all sing along!
