2 Page 2 NORTHCOUNTRY Style September th annual fund raiser for MDA Tomahawk Fall Ride roars Sept By Abigail Bostwick Reporter abostwick@tomahawkleader.com Tomahawk has company coming. From Sept. 13 through Sept. 16, the streets of the city will hum with the engines of thousands of motorcycles, in attendance for the 26 th annual Tomahawk Fall Ride for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). MDA and the Ride Not only the largest motorcycle gathering in the state, the Ride is the biggest fund raiser for MDA in northern Wisconsin, having netted more than $1.5 million for the cause since MDA benefactors take an active role in the Tomahawk Fall Ride, running activities at SARA Park on West Somo Avenue. One of their most popular venues is the motorcycle raffle, where two, brand new, custompainted Harley-Davidsons are up for grabs. Find tickets at local businesses for $5 per ticket or three for $10. First prize is a 2007 Harley-Davidson Ultra Electric Glide Classic and second prize is a 2007 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Custom. Jesse Hunter, new products technician at Harley-Davidson, Tomahawk Operations, has volunteered his time to custom paint the cycles over the last several years. John Schaffer, senior project engineer at Harley-Davidson, disassembles and reassembles the cycles with their new paint parts. All proceeds benefit MDA. Ticket sales will be ongoing until the raffle drawing Sunday at noon. Ride Benefits Region With an influx of more than 45,000 motorcycle enthusiasts to the region, the Tomahawk Fall Ride means a huge economic boost for not only Tomahawk, but the entire region. The Tomahawk Regional Chamber of Commerce and Department of Tourism estimated that in 2006, Ride visitors spent $22.5 million, with an overall economic impact of close to $186 million. The Tomahawk Chamber and our community, in general, looks forward to the roar each year in September that signifies the Tomahawk Fall Ride, notes chamber Executive Director Christine Brown. This event gives us a very unique and fun opportunity to showcase our community spirit and beautiful natural resources, while raising money for an important cause. What to do, where to start Let off the throttle at these following events that take place over Tomahawk Fall Ride weekend: THURSDAY, SEPT. 13 Beginning at 11 a.m., SARA Park on West Somo Avenue will kick off the Ride with Harley-Davidson demo rides, a Harley-Davidson traveling museum, Fun Runs through the Northwoods with prizes, an MDA information booth, official Tomahawk Operations Harley- Davidson merchandise, numerous vendors, pin striping, air brushing, merchandise sales, children s attractions and other entertainment as well as food and refreshments. 5 September 2007 NORTHCOUNTRY Style Page 5 Tomahawk cyclist pushes 24 hours to finish 18 th in national bike competition By Jed Buelow Reporter jbuelow@tomahawkleader.com Doing anything continuously over a 24-hour period is a challenge. Throw in a mountain bike and some of the country s greatest cyclists and you have what Class of 2000 Tomahawk High School graduate Justin Lund was recently up against. Lund, 26, was one of 750 cyclists who took part in the 24 Hours of Nine-Mile Mountain Bike Race held at Nine Mile Recreational Area in Wausau July 28. Started in 1999, the race has grown into one of the largest in the Midwest and has played host to the past two USA Cycling 24-hour Mountain Bike National Championships. Unlike many of those racers who either opted for the 12-hour competition or to ride as a team, Lund, who has been competitively mountain bike racing for the past three years and was taking part in his first 24-hour race, had to go at it alone. Not that Lund is new to individual competition or enduring physical tests. In high school he ran long distance track and cross country for four years. After, due to tendonitis in both knees, he had to take a break from running and discovered mountain bike racing. Competing in his first 24-hour championship, Lund wasn t exactly sure what to expect of the daylong race. Previously, he had moved his way up through WORS (Wisconsin Off Road Series) and USA Cycling Categories, winning races at every level and reaching the podium several times along the way. When people ask me how I train, I tell them, I ride for 24 hours twice a week, Lund said. I follow it with, I m just kidding. He prepared for the 24-hour race on a 14- mile trail filled with challenging hills, rocky single track and wide open ski trails, by riding roughly three hours per day while continuing to competitively race in WORS and the Wisconsin Endurance Mountain bike Series (WEMS). Also, in the weeks leading up to the grueling race, he concentrated on his diet and rest. I tried not to think about having to ride on such a long technical course for that amount of time, he said. I needed to take everything one hour at a time and focus on preparation. Along with his mental and nutritional needs, Lund also had to take into consideration the piecemeal bike he had put together only days before the 24/9. Unlike many of the professionals who had at their disposal three or four bikes to swap out during the race, he had only one. I almost didn t even get to compete in the race, Lund said. My street bike was wrecked after I was hit by a car and the frame of my mountain bike had cracked. I was literally piecing the bike together before the race. Race day Rising temperatures and oppressive humidity greeted the hundreds of cyclists at the starting gate. In preparation for the long day ahead, Lund ate a large meal and stretched before the race began. At first it was confusing trying to determine who was part of a relay team or solo. You try to watch the professionals and not worry about the teams, he said. There s a lot of strategy that goes into the race. I tried to pick my times to come in to take breaks from the heat. Lund s first break came after his third lap, or 42 miles into the afternoon, at which point he ate and grabbed another water bottle. At 84 miles, or after six laps, he again stopped for water. During the daylight hours I felt I did pretty good, he said. During the day you can see every rock and pebble on the course. Riding at night on a 14-mile course is a lot different. Lund had to have his light system up and running by 6:30 p.m. As darkness fell on Lund and the other cyclists, the track took on different challenges. Things come at you a lot faster than you d think. I had a pretty good light setup and was able to complete four laps, he said. You use less energy at night and are a lot more careful. At the same time, it s much easier to make mistakes. Fortunately for Lund there were no nighttime mistakes. As daylight returned to the track, Lund was poised to make a strong finish until the weather, track and over 17 hours of riding left his stomach feeling queasy. I sat under a canopy for about 40 minutes and then was able to make my way back out on the track to complete laps 13, 14 and 15, he said. I got to the finish line 15 minutes before I could cross without doing another lap. So along with many other racers, I waited to cross at 10 a.m. on Sunday to make it official. As Lund crossed the finish line, he thought about the grueling challenge and how he was able to move up four spots during the nighttime hours. He finished 23rd out of 71 total 24-hour solo riders and 18th of 33 competing in the National Championship Category. In all, he completed 13 laps for a total miles. Lund s 18th place finish at the national 24 hour championships has him looking forward to next year s national race and he is strongly considering racing at the world competition level. Racing like this brings out the true person, true character and true soul of the one competing in it. Whether it s a solo rider, duo or team, he said. You can t do this for a paycheck nor can you do it on a weekly basis, but you can do it because you love it and that s all that matters when you re doing a lap at four in the morning. 7 September 2007 By Tom Colstad Sports Reporter The Spirit Reservoir Association (SRA) is establishing a trust to help fund environmental studies on the Spirit Flowage and provide public information on invasive species threatening that body of water. According to SRA president Blane Powers, the association is concerned that invasive species, like Eurasian milfoil, purple loosestrife, zebra mussels or VHS disease could enter the Spirit Flowage and ruin it for recreation, angling and water quality. We need to battle invasive species and state grants only pay for 50 percent of the cost of doing studies or rehabilitation, said Powers. That is why we are establishing a trust to come up with the first 50 percent. At the beginning of the SRA annual meeting Aug. 11, Bill Klase, of the University of Wisconsin Extension-Rhinelander, gave a presentation on invasive species and how to help prevent their introduction into area waters. One of the major fund raisers for SRA is its annual Minnow Races, held in conjunction with the association s annual meeting. This year, more than 300 people attended the event held at Norma s 2, located west of Tomahawk on State Hwy. 86. 8 Page 8 NORTHCOUNTRY Style September 2007 Pieces fit for a queen: Fine art puts Red Turf Ranch of Gleason on the map By Abigail Bostwick Reporter abostwick@tomahawkleader.com Swarovski crystals and hand-carved turquoise adorn the soft leather of a breast collar, reins and headstall. It s a setting fit for a queen a queen who will dress her horse in the precious gemstone tack after she is crowned Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Miss Rodeo America. The hands behind the exclusive custom tack are those of Gleason s Gail Travis, who has been designing, creating and selling her custom pieces nationally and internationally for the last six years or so. I am the only one in the world doing this to this extent, she observed. A Rice Lake native and horse rider all her life, Gail often found herself looking for tack that would make her horse stand out, and, just as often, finding none. I decided I d just make it, she said. People took notice of her fine craftsmanship, and Gail began making pieces to sell. Putting items up for bid on a popular Internet web site proved successful, so Gail started her own web page and business Red Turf Ranch Custom Tack. She has since sold tack all across the United States, Canada and overseas to folks in Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Located Just 1/4 mile West of 51 - Hwy. 64 Exit TERRACE VIEW CAMPSITES Time to Book for Fall Camping! Quality pieces and attention to detail are behind every piece of custom tack Gail designs. She uses leather from Weaver, a renowned dealer, and obtains precious gemstones and semiprecious gemstones primarily from New Mexico and Arizona. I m really picky on quality, she indicated. Breast collars, reins and headstalls shine with single sets or combinations of turquoise, rubies, emeralds, onyx, garnet, jade, hematite, coral and more. A newer endeavor Gail has been expanding is a Native American reproduction line, featuring hand-cut fringe, all-bone hair pipe and sinew. She also may add turquoise pendants, feathers, beaded rosettes and vintage, silver Navajo jewelry accents. It s super popular and extremely hard to find, Gail stated. Setting to work on the complete tack set that will be awarded to the PRCA Miss Rodeo America gave Gail a feeling of great privilege. This is a huge honor as this tack set will be awarded to the winner of the pageant and her title is a much-coveted award, Gail noted. 9 September 2007 Entertain... Grilled Shrimp and Pasta Salad Serves: 6 to ounce bottle Hidden Valley Organic Ranch dressing 1 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled 1 bunch cilantro, tough stems removed, divided 1 medium poblano chile 1 medium white onion, cut into 1/2-inch slices 3 ears corn, husked 1 pound large uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined Oil for grilling (about 1/4 cup) 1 cup diced jícama (about 1/4-inch pieces) 1 pint small cherry or grape tomatoes, preferably a mix of red and yellow ½ pound corkscrew or penne pasta, cooked al dente according to package directions Salt and freshly ground black pepper In blender or food processor, combine dressing, avocado and 2 tablespoons cold water. Roughly chop cilantro, reserving 1/4 cup for garnish. Add remainder to blender or processor. Process until smooth. Refrigerate dressing, tightly covered, until ready to use. Light charcoal and let burn until charcoal is covered with gray ash but still very hot. Or, if using gas grill or grill pan, set to medium-high heat. When grill is quite hot, brush corn, poblano pepper and onion slices with oil; sprinkle corn and onion with salt and pepper. Thread shrimp onto skewers, brush with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill vegetables and shrimp, turning regularly to ensure even cooking: 10 to 15 minutes for poblano (sear over hot test part of fire until evenly blackened and blistered all over), about 10 min utes for onions, about 5 minutes for corn and about 4 minutes for shrimp. Cover poblano with towel to rest. When cool enough to handle, wipe off charred skin and remove seed pod and seeds. Rinse briefly, chop into small pieces and place in large bowl. When corn is cool enough to handle, cut kernels off cob like an expert and add to bowl with poblano. Chop onion into small pieces and add to bowl, along with whole grilled shrimp, jícama, tomatoes, cooked pasta, 1 to 1 1/2 cups of prepared dressing and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir to combine. Salad is best if covered and refrigerated for an hour or so. Taste and add additional dressing and salt, if desired. Serve sprinkled with reserved 1/4 cup cilantro. Grilled Chicken Skewers With Mango and Pineapple Serves: 4 ¾ cup Hidden Valley Organic Ranch dressing 1 canned chipotle chile in adobo sauce, seeded and finely chopped* 2 teaspoons adobo sauce (from can above) 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice ½ teaspoon salt 1 pound chicken tenders, each cut into 3 equal pieces ½ pineapple, rind and core removed, cut into 1-inch chunks 1 large mango, peeled, cut into 1-inch chunks 1 small red onion, quartered and separated into layers Oil for grilling (about 2 tablespoons) ¼ cup roughly chopped cilantro 1 lime, quartered In medium bowl, combine dressing, chipotle chile, adobo sauce, honey, lime juice and salt for marinade. Stir well. Assemble 4 skewers from ingredients in following order: onion, chicken, mango, chicken, pineapple, chicken, onion. Repeat twice more to complete skewer. Lay skewers in shallow pan. Pour 1/4 cup marinade into small dish; set aside. Brush remaining marinade over skewers, coating all sides evenly. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate about an hour. Light charcoal and let burn until charcoal is covered with gray ash but still very hot. Or, if using gas grill or grill pan, set to medium-high heat. When grill is quite hot, remove skewers from marinade (discard excess); brush lightly with oil. Lay oiled skewers on hot grates and grill until marked on all four sides and cooked through, 10 to 12 minutes total. Arrange skewers on serving platter, drizzle with reserved 1/4 cup marinade, garnish with chopped cilantro and serve with lime wedges. *These ingredients are available in the Mexican food aisle, or the ethnic/gourmet aisle of your grocery store. One constant in a family camping trip is the evening campfire, around which scary tales are told and s mores are made. Due to the fact that firewood can harbor many different kinds of invasive pests and diseases such as gypsy moth, oak wilt and the emerald ash borer that are harmful to Wisconsin s trees, the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) created a permanent rule, effective Dec. 1, 2006, which prohibits bringing firewood onto DNR properties from more than 50 miles away or from outside Wisconsin. This includes campsites in state parks and forests. So, what is acceptable firewood to use while camping? 1. Firewood purchased within 50 miles of a state forest, park or other state-managed property and harvested in Wisconsin. 2. Firewood purchased from a vendor who is certified by the Wisconsin Department from entering state properties under the DNR rule and will be confiscated if the wood was harvested beyond 50 miles from the campground or from out-of-state. Pallets and slabs are cut wood, but they can be fresh enough or have enough attached bark that they can harbor pests or diseases. Since the burning of painted wood or wood treated with preservatives releases toxins into the air, this type of wood will not be allowed to be burned on DNR property. The same goes for chipboard and plywood. The DNR recommends that campers leave firewood at home and purchase aged firewood near or within their campground. Most parks offer quality firewood for sale at a reasonable price, and private vendors outside the park often have firewood available as well. Firewood purchased at or near the campground should be used there and not left behind or taken to another destination. Those campers from outside Wisconsin should not bring firewood into the state. It will be confiscated, and if the wood is from of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Illinois, Indiana, Ohio or lower Michigan, one Protection. can be liable for federal fines up to $1, Dimensional and untreated lumber scraps. People camping at Wisconsin State parks and forests are allowed to bring scrap lumber for campfires. Dimensional lumber scraps, such as two-by-fours from a building project will be allowed on the property at the discretion of park staff. Lumber is fully dried and debarked before it can be used in building, which means it cannot harbor pests and diseases of living trees like raw wood or logs can. Minimally processed wood such as full or partial pallets, skids or slabs are prohibited Campers can buy firewood in, or just outside of, nearly every Wisconsin State park, except for Council Grounds State Park, located northwest of Merrill, Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Newport State Park and the flowage properties (Chippewa Flowage, Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, Willow Flowage Scenic Waters Area, Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area and the Menomonee River Natural Resources Area). If visiting these areas, campers will find firewood available locally, either for sale in nearby communities or on the property as dead, dry wood. Although car trips can be stressful for many household pets, experts agree that they do not have to be if drivers take some simple precautions. If the pet is not used to car trips, try a few test runs to help acclimate them for the ride. Spending time in the car while parked and short drives to nearby destinations are an easy start. Cats should be kept in a carrier and dogs should be held in a restraining harness. This will help stabilize your pet if there is a sudden movement or crash. Feed your pet a little less than you would normally. T his is a trip you won t want to miss whether it s an afternoon sightseeing cruise or a sunset dinner cruise with cocktails and entertainment. You ll love the experience of exploring the scenic, secluded waters just downstream from where the Pelican River enters the Wisconsin. The river widens, meandering around islands and curling around bends, taking you downriver from Rhinelander to the Hat Rapids Dam NCS 2-5 WIS350 Since too much water can upset their stomachs on the road, limit water by providing ice to chew on. Don't forget to pack some toys and any other favorite items or bedding. When traveling to places your pet is not familiar with, it is particularly important to have a collar with an ID tag that includes both your permanent and vacation addresses and phone numbers. Bring a photo of your pet in the event you need to put up "Lost Pet" posters. Many veterinarians and animal welfare organizations also offer micro-chip identification implants. Dogs like to stick their heads out of the car window, but this is very unsafe. Small stones and debris become dangerous projectiles at highway speeds. Never leave your pet in a car in warm or hot weather. Even with windows open or parked in the shade, interior temperatures can quickly rise to lethal levels. Pack a first aid kit with tweezers and alcohol for tick removal, cloth bandages and topical antiseptic. More information on this and other safety topics is available at com/safety.
