2 CRX is an outdoor based program with an emphasis on encouraging kids to have fun while being outdoors. CRX offers exciting and healthy activities over a nine-week period ranging from mountain climbing, canoeing, hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking, swimming and camping. CRX explores some of the most beautiful spots that Aroostook, Piscataquis, and Penobscot counties offer. CRX teaches the skills associated with every activity that is offered throughout this exciting summer & fall program. CRX is for youths entering 5 th 12 th grades, and promotes exciting recreational opportunities throughout Maine. Upon registering, beginning April 30, 2018, participants will be provided an itinerary and recommended gear list for each week s activity. The Caribou Parks and Registration Department has the right to add, delete, or swap programs based upon registration demand. (Note: yearly membership fees do not apply to any CRX programs) NOTICE OF PAYMENT POLICY FOR CRX PROGRAMS The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to provide outdoor programming for all ages. In an effort to insure the quality of the programs and insure good service, it is imperative that we have clear policies regarding registration payments. Hopefully the guidelines below will provide you with a clear understanding of policies when registering. 1 All programs will have a minimum number of registrants required. If that number is not fulfilled, the program or trip will be cancelled. 2 All registrations, prior to the deadline, must be accompanied by payment in full. No exceptions. 3 If the trip has to be cancelled due to lack of registration, anyone having paid will be refunded in full. 4 All deadlines will be scheduled within two (2) weeks of the actual program. If by the deadline the minimum required number of registrations is met, the registration will remain open. Persons wishing to register must come into the Wellness and Recreation Center to register and pay in full for the program. 5 ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS WITHIN 48 HOURS NOTICE OF SCHEDULED TRIP. There will be a 50% penalty on any refund request made within two-weeks of the scheduled trip. Thank you for your cooperation.

3 Week 1: Allagash Wilderness Waterway (entering 6 th - 11 th grade) June 12-June 14 Cost: $ resident This two-night three-day paddling trip on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway exposes kids to the fun opportunities that we have right in our back yard! Canoes will be our mode of transportation for both people and gear. Kids will learn the basic skills associated with traveling with gear in boats, setting up tents, and staying dry in them should it rain. Top that all off with star filled nights around a campfire. This trip will start at Michaud Farms, and conclude at the Allagash Boat Landing, stopping for two nights at the Muskie infested Allagash Falls Campsite, so bring your steel leader and favorite Muskie lures. Max. 10 Week 2: Kayaking I (entering 5 th - 6 th grade) June 19-June21 Cost: $35.00 Resident Like being around water in the summer time? How about floating leisurely with the wind at your back and periodically jumping in the water for a nice dip? This week starts out at Cross Lake boat landing learning the FUNdamentals of learning wet exits, wet entry s, rolling kayaks, t-rescues and most importantly, how to get the water back OUT of your boat. The remaining week is split between flat and moving water. If you don t like eating ice cream, this trip is NOT for you! As at the completion of everyday we are guaranteed to find some ice cream to help sooth those sunburns that you re sure to get. (Sorry, ice-cream is not included with the price ) Max 13 Week 3: Backpacking Baxter (entering 6 th - 11 th grade) June 27- June 30 Cost: $75.00 Resident This three-night outing will take us into the backcountry of Baxter Park where we ll stay in a bunkhouse, fly-fish remote trout ponds and swim in crystal clear waters. Fly-Fishing instruction provided, but participants are not required to fly-fish. Limited number of backpacking backpacks available on a first-come first-serve basis. Kids that have experienced this trip have caught an incredible number of trout, some caught tout for the first time on a fly rod and it motivated them to further persue this method on their own when they returned home. The fly fishing in the Russell Pond area is second to none! Max 10 Week 4: Kayaking II (entering 7 th - 11 th. grade) July 11 - July 13 Cost: $35.00 Resident This second week of kayaking is geared towards participants that have a stronger background around kayaks (but not required). This week starts at Cross Lake Boat Landing refreshing participant s memories with the fundamental skills they need to rescue each other in the event of a rollover. This week is split evenly between moving and flat water. As with Kayaking I, participants are provided PFD s, Paddles, and boats. 4 Week 5: Mountain Biking (entering 6 th - 11 th grade) July 17 July 20 Cost: $35.00 Resident Aroostook County is busting at the seams with great places to bike. Biking is split up between the Nordic Heritage Center riding single track mountain bike trails, Split Cedar trail in Van Buren and the Madawaska Lake area. In addition to the great biking opportunities, we also visit an area bike shops to learn about bike maintenance skills. Nearly every day, we find our way to a place to swim and cool off after a hard day s work! The Caribou Rec. has 5 Fuji Mountain Bikes free for use provided by the Caribou Parks & Rec Foundation. Rides will be from 3 to 17 miles in length. Participants should expect lots of swimming, grilling and ice cream nearly every day! Max 10 Week 6: Katahdin I (entering 6 th & 7 th grade) July 24 July 26 (cost same as week 7) Week 7: Katahdin II (entering 8 th - 11 th. grade) July 31- August 2 Cost: $75.00 Resident Are you ready for an adventure of a lifetime??? We guarantee you that every time you drive by Mt. Katahdin on I-95 you will never look at the mountain the same way again. This two-night three-day trip will test you in a way you have never been tested before. Back for its tenth-year participants anxiously await this summer rite of passage. Week 6 features climbing Mt. Katahdin from the west side of the mountain, or the famed Abol Trail. Week 7 features climbing Mt. Katahdin from the east side via Chimney Pond Campground. After setting up, participants will travel to either Ledge Falls or Togue Pond day use area where we will spend the afternoon basking in the sun either sliding on the natural rock waterslide or the sandy beaches of Togue Pond.

5 Week 8: North Maine Woods Fishing Trip (5 th - 11 th grade) September 14-September 16 Cost: $100 If you like to CATCH fish this two night, three day trip at Maccanamac Sporting Camps on Spider Lake is for you. If you ve never trolled with downriggers this is a great opportunity to learn how to use this technique. We ll also fly fish remote trout ponds and stream fish. Participants are required to have their own fishing equipment (downriggers provided). Price includes meals, guide, lodging, instruction and transportation. September 14 is a workshop day at RSU 39 schools. Max 6. Week 9: Chimney Pond Backpacking Trip & Mt. Katahdin Fall Summit (9 th - 12 th grade) October 2-October 4 Cost: $75 Participants will spend two nights at Chimney Pond in Baxter State Park. Price includes meals, lodging, guide, backpack and transportation. A gear list will be provided to all participants. October 5 th & 6 th coincide with harvest recess at RSU 39 schools. Max 10 Safety is the first principle of CRX programs and each individual activity is designed with that in mind. Highly trained and skilled members of Caribou Parks and Recreation Department s staff, led by Neal Sleeper, will provide a student to instructor ratio of six to one or better. Registered Maine Guide, Wilderness First Aid, CPR and Lifeguard trained staff members shall direct each program. Each day will begin and end at The Rec., although meeting times and activity locations will vary and are subject to change. Because of the physical demands associated with these weeks, participants are strongly encouraged to take the necessary steps in readying themselves to endure three-days of exercising and nighttime relaxation! Explorers should expect lots of biking and swimming on this trip. Historically when we arrive at the park with the van, we never use it again; all modes of transportation for the next three days, other than the trip home will be done in a nonmotorized format, meaning, foot, water or bike.
