4 History + Timeline In 1940, the Matheson family donated acres of land to Miami Dade County. The county commissioner Charles H. Crandon promised to build a causeway to Key Biscayne. In 1947, the causeway was opened after WWII. In 1948, the Crandon Park Zoo was opened to the public. The total area of the zoo was 48 acres. Hurricane Besty has killed numerous zoo animals in In 1981, it was moved to the south of Miami and renamed as the Miami MetroZoo. The old zoo was replaced by the botanical garden in The total area of Crandon Park is about 800 acres. The beach extends two miles on the Atlantic Ocean side.
