6 6 The Ballston BID has created a new charitable arm, BallstonGives. Fundraising events, such as Taste of Arlington, will be controlled by BallstonGives, allowing the events to have an even greater positive impact on the community. BallstonGives will be maintained by selling sponsorships and tickets to programs and events, applying for grants from governmental and private institutions and by accepting direct contributions.

7 Ballston BID and now BallstonGives are one of AFAC s staunchest supporters. Our continued relationship has helped feed thousands of Arlington residents. The BID has supported AFAC with donations of food, funds, and valuable volunteer time. Their commitment to the Arlington community is woven into everything that they do. Charles Meng Executive Director, Arlington Food Assistance Center Since January 2012, the Ballston BID has donated a total of $142,535 to local charities; some of which include the Arlington Food Assistance Center, Leadership Arlington, Doorways for Women & Children, Arlington Community Center, and the Arlington Art Center. While many Business Improvement Districts in the area make donations, few have distinct and separate charitable arms. The BID recognizes that supporting our nonprofit partners is good for business. 7

This interactive mapping tool is available to the public via the Ballston BID wesbite to access and experience the Ballston neighborhood like never before. The Ballston Directory highlights all aspects of Ballston from our iconic real estate, to our endless transportation options, to all the different amenities Ballston has to offer. This directory will be a powerful tool to attract new companies and support the current tenants that occupy our commercial real estate.

The Ballston BID teamed up with Brookfield Properties in 2014 to bring a destination restaurant to our neighborhood through a Restaurant Challenge. The winner, SER has been a great addition to the neighborhood and has received rave reviews from the Washington Post, Washingtonian and Arlington Magazine. 10

11 Our Arlington building in Ballston is really our headquarters in the National Capital Region for Virginia Tech. We are looking to create experiential opportunities for our undergraduates essentially studying abroad within the state of Virginia and we look at the community around our Ballston building as a living laboratory. It s extremely gratifying to see Kettler Capitals Iceplex become home to amateur hockey and figure skating groups as well as general public open skates. Ballston is home to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Homeland Security Research Projects Agency, Virginia Tech/IBM s Center for Community Security & Resilience, Accenture, Evolent Health, Applied Predictive Technologies and CACI. These organizations continue to attract many nonprofit organizations, think tanks and private sector companies that are also making innovations in science and technology. If you just look at the growth of Ballston since Evolent Health moved here, a number of businesses and retail have moved in to create this innovative culture. 16 Taste of Arlington is an annual food festival attracting over 50,000 visitors and residents of Arlington and the DC Metropolitan area to Ballston. Now in its 30th year it boasts fantastic cuisine, a diverse selection of beer and wine, Girls on the Run 5k, KidZone, BarkPark, VIP Tasting Pavilion and live music on multiple stages. In 2016, we partnered with Deschutes Brewery to bring their 400 ft Street Pub to the event. Ballston Animal Hospital has been a proud sponsor of Taste of Arlington for the past 3 years. It has been a pleasure working with the Ballston BID on this well planned and well attended community food festival. We are able to have direct contact with our existing customers while reaching out to potential new customers in a fun environment. Our exposure to over 40,000 people in one day is invaluable and helps us continue to be one of the top animal hospitals in Arlington! 17 The Ballston BID in partnership with FreshFarm Markets produces a highquality farmers market every Thursday located adjacent to the Ballston Metro at Welburn Square. 20 food vendors offer fresh, local produce and prepared food from April through October. The first Thursday of each month is a Mega Market with additional vendors, a live band, chef demonstrations and a beer and wine garden. Monroe Bay Vineyard is so excited to be part of the Ballston Farmers Market. The Market has a great urban location in Wellburn Square just across the street from Ballston Metro stop. Unlike some street markets we are in a grassy area that makes you feel like you are buying from a stand at the farm. We enjoy selling our wine and cider to new and regular customers. We provide tasting and sell bottles every week and the first Thursday of the month is the mega market where we have live music and a beer and wine garden where you can enjoy a glass of wine outside. 18 METRO PLAZA The Ballston/MU metro stop currently receives 26,000 trips daily and it is anticipated to grow to 38,000 by In response to this increase, the metro plaza will be redeveloped in the coming year. The redesign will: increase traffic safety reorient space to improve transit/ bus circulation around the stations decrease bus traffic on Stuart St improve access and enhance station amenities, including maximizing green space and increasing visibility for retail. Ballston is a key stop along the Metro Orange and Silver Lines with 26,000 trips per day. It is also a bus transit hub, with 9,000 trips per day. If you happen to need a car, both ZipCar and Car2Go are available. Ballston has 7 Capital Bikeshare stations and serves as the commercial intersection of many of Northern Virginia s major arterials and highways- Route 66, Glebe Road, Fairfax Drive and Wilson Boulevard. It is located only 8 miles from The Washington National Airport. 20 BALLSTON QUARTER Ballston Common Mall intends to be anything but common in the near future with a transformation along Wilson Boulevard turning the mall inside out creating an all new street front façade. Forest City s plans will create a town center in Ballston a destination and gathering place. A new, fresh mix of great restaurants, shopping, nightlife, family activities and much more. Ballston Quarter will embrace street life with the creation of open-air retail concourses, as well as a multi-level main entrance plaza that will serve as a community focal point. The redevelopment will include a significant upgrade to the retail mix inside its four levels on 365,000 square feet of space. We re transforming Ballston Common to be the centerpiece of Ballston for the future! With a significantly upgraded retail array, a new configuration including new finishes, a new open-air plaza and a European-style retail concourse, this will be the heart of the neighborhood for decades to come. 21 BALLSTON PARKS WELBURN SQUARE is a small park that sits in the middle of Ballston across the street from the Ballston/MU metro stop shaded by skyscrapers. Welburn Square hosts the Ballston Farmer s Market during the summer. QUINCY PARK located adjacent to Central Library is a 4-acre park with a playground, tennis courts, basketball court and sand volleyball. You may also reserve shelters for picnics. GLEBE & RANDOLPH PARK located at 615 N Glebe Road features a pair of bocce courts, benches, and green space. MOSAIC PARK at 538 N. Pollard Street is the first park in Arlington to have a playground that features a climbing wall and bocce courts. The Mosaic Park design master plan includes development of an interactive water feature, children s play area, multipurpose court, flexible use lawn area, half-court basketball area and rain garden. A major feature of the park design will be to incorporate sustainable practices and features. BALLSTON POND PARK is located at 4747 N Fairfax Drive. This is a great spot to look at wildlife in a 4 acre urban setting with access to the the Martha Custis Trail. 21

22 22 FAIRFAX DRIVE Last year the Ballston BID finalized plans for improvements in the public realm. The changes began this year with the exciting work that is bringing the character and personality of Ballston to the street level. The medians on Fairfax Drive were transformed starting with the removal of plant debris and the addition of fresh plantings that are regularly maintained. The new bold median landscape design includes signature bald cypress trees, ribbons of shrubs and geometric plantings of perennials work together to create a striking, unique appearance.

23 Arlington Public Schools (APS) was ranked the 38th best school division in the U.S. by the 2015 Niche Rankings. Best Public School Districts ranked 8,738 school districts based on dozens of key statistics and 4.6 million opinions from 280,000 students and parents. APS is the top ranked Virginia school system on the list and one of only two school systems from Virginia in the top 100 school districts. A high ranking indicates that the district contains great schools with exceptional teachers, sufficient resources and a diverse set of high-achieving students who rate their experiences very highly.
