2 2 A Note from our Seminarian Intern Dear Community of St. Margaret Mary: I write this letter to you as a way of introducing myself, my name is Andrew Hedstrom; I m the new seminarian intern here at the parish. I follow in the footsteps of my wonderful predecessors: Fr. Danilo Guinto, and Deacon Jose Chepe Ortiz, who you've had the pleasure of knowing in recent years. As for myself, I've been studying for the priesthood at St. John's Seminary for the past 4 years, which may sound like quite a bit, but with a total of 7 years of formation, it's really just a drop in the bucket. With the grace of God, I should be ordained to the diaconate in the summer of 2020, and to the priesthood in the summer of My history up to this point in life has been interesting in some respects. I grew up in San Bernardino city where I attended elementary, middle, and high school, and received my BA in Criminal Justice from California State University, San Bernardino. In 2007, at the age of 19, I enlisted in the US Army as an MP for 8 years. And, in 2014, while still having a few months left on my contract, I joined the seminary and began my studies for the priesthood. All of this brings me to the last area of discussion, and arguably the most significant for a seminarian: my vocation story. I won t bore you with too many details, but I will share two important stories from my discernment thus far. The first is where it began. Upon reflection, I can tell you that it was planted many years ago, around the age of 10, while I was attending Sunday Mass with my grandparents. When I saw the altar servers and priest process in, I saw how cool they looked, pointed at them, and 10-year-old me told my grandparents, I want to do that! The following Wednesday I was back at the parish learning how to be an altar server. The second story has to do with how my vocation was encouraged. During college I often found myself at daily Mass at a hospital in San Bernardino. Whenever I was there, I would inevitably have an elderly lady from the community come up to me and ask if I was going to be a priest. In the moment I completely rejected it (after all, I was only 18 or 19 at the time), but it definitely watered the little seed of a vocation that was planted when I was much younger. It allowed me to think on it and consider that if other people saw this in me, maybe I shouldn t dismiss the idea right away. My hope is that the letter finds you well, and that it has given you a little insight in to my history and my vocation. I look forward to praying and working with all of you during my 10 months here at St. Margaret Mary. Workshop For Those Who Are Separated Or Divorced When: Starting on Monday Sept. 17 (Every Monday for 6 Weeks) Where: St. Joseph' Center Time: 7:00 to 8:30 PM Join us in a group setting as we deal with the many issues facing those who are separated or divorced. This weekend volunteers from Casa de los Angelitos are in the grotto area selling raffle tickets for their annual fundraiser. Casa provides shelter to women who are pregnant and are experiencing a life crisis such as abandonment by a husband or boyfriend, homelessness, domestic violence or some other crisis that could bring harm to their unborn child. They provide a safe home, prenatal care, education in parenting, transportation for doctor visits, job search skills, counseling as needed and a staff that cares about them and their unborn child. Casa de los Angelitos is located in Harbor City and is the only crisis pregnancy shelter in the South Bay. It depends totally on the contributions of the faith community in the local area. This is a time now for prayer and repentance and a time for examining our conscience, especially for those of us who are bishops and priests. 6 Una nota de Nuestro Seminarista Estimada Comunidad de Santa Margarita María: Les escribo esta carta como una forma de presentarme, mi nombre es Andrew Hedstrom; Soy el nuevo becario seminarista aquí en la parroquia. Sigo los pasos de mis maravillosos predecesores: el Padre Danilo Guinto y el Diácono José "Chepe" Ortiz, a quienes han tenido el placer de conocer en los últimos años. En cuanto a mí, he estado estudiando para el sacerdocio en el Seminario de San Juan durante los últimos 4 años, lo que puede parecer poco, pero con un total de 7 años de formación, es realmente una gota en el cubo. Con la gracia de Dios, seré ordenado al diaconado en el verano de 2020 y al sacerdocio en el verano de Mi historia hasta este punto de vida ha sido interesante en algunos aspectos. Crecí en la ciudad de San Bernardino, donde asistí a la escuela primaria, intermedia y secundaria, y obtuve mi BA en Justicia Penal de la Universidad Estatal de California, San Bernardino. En A la edad de 19 años, me enlisté en el ejército de los EE. UU. Como policía militar durante 8 años. Y, en 2014, mientras aún me quedaban algunos meses de contrato, ingresé al seminario y comencé mis estudios para el sacerdocio. Todo esto me lleva a la última área de discusión, y podría decirse que es la más significativa para un seminarista: mi historia de vocación. No te aburriré con demasiados detalles, pero compartiré dos historias importantes de mi discernimiento hasta ahora. El primero es donde comenzó. Después de reflexionar, puedo decirles que fue plantado hace muchos años, alrededor de los 10 años, mientras asistía a la misa dominical con mis abuelos. Cuando vi entrar a los monaguillos en la procesión de los sacerdotes, vi lo bien que se veían, los apunté y les dije a mis abuelos: " Quiero hacer eso!". El miércoles siguiente volví a la parroquia. Para aprender a ser un monaguillo. La segunda historia tiene que ver con cómo mi vocación fue alentada. Durante la universidad, a menudo me encontraba en Misa diaria en un hospital en San Bernardino. Cada vez que estaba allí, inevitablemente tenía que venir una señora mayor de la comunidad a preguntarme si iba a ser sacerdote. En el momento en que lo rechacé por completo (después de todo, solo tenía 18 o 19 años en ese momento), definitivamente se regó la pequeña semilla de una vocación que se plantó cuando era mucho más joven. Me permitió pensar en ello y considerar que si otras personas veían esto en mí, tal vez no debería descartar la idea de inmediato. Mi esperanza es que al leer esta carta se encuentre bien y que les haya dado una pequeña idea de mi historia y mi vocación. Espero orar y trabajar con todos ustedes durante mis 10 meses aquí en Sta. En esos ratos de oración ante el Santísimo, ante Jesús Sacramentado, recordamos que su presencia es fruto del amor que nos tiene. Es un momento oportuno para renovar nuestro propósito de ser santos y de responder generosamente al amor de Dios. En la adoración a Cristo Jesús también podemos pedir perdón por nuestras faltas y pecados, reconociendo así, con humildad, que sólo Él tiene el poder para perdonarnos y que lo ejerce por medio de sus sacerdotes en el confesionario, renovando nuestra confianza en su misericordia. Este fin de semana los voluntarios de La Casa de los Angelitos están en el área de la gruta, vendiendo boletos de rifa para su recaudación anual de fondos. La Casa proporciona refugio a las mujeres que están embarazadas y están atravesando una crisis en su vida, como el abandono de un esposo o novio, la falta de vivienda, la violencia doméstica o alguna otra crisis que pueda dañar al bebé que está por nacer. Proporcionan un hogar seguro, atención prenatal, educación en crianza de los hijos, transporte para visitas al médico, habilidades de búsqueda de empleo, asesoramiento según sea necesario y un personal que se preocupa por ellas y su hijo por nacer. La Casa de los Angelitos se encuentra en Harbor City y es el único refugio de crisis de embarazo en South Bay. Depende totalmente de las contribuciones de la comunidad de fe en el área local. 8 Llega el momento en que el Señor decide preguntar a sus discípulos lo que ellos piensan de El, y obtiene de Pedro la confesión: Tú eres el Cristo. Jesús toma pie de esta declaración para enseñarles que el Mesías habrá de sufrir, y cuál es su verdadera misión, abriéndoles a un conocimiento más profundo de su persona. Todos estamos de acuerdo que solamente las personas que nos conocen íntimamente, las que nos han visto reír y llorar, las que saben nuestros dolores y nuestros amores, las que comparten nuestros ideales y sueños, son las que pueden hablar de nosotros diciendo a los demás quienes somos. Cristo actúa con ellos a modo de amigo auténtico, de verdadera Maestro, que confía los secretos a sus amigos. En el evangelio leemos la confesión de San Pedro junto con el primer anuncio de la pasión, con sus implicaciones para los discípulos de Jesús. Poco antes de la confesión de Pedro, después de la multiplicación de los panes, los discípulos parecían ciegos; no acababan de entender el significado del milagro. Pero Jesús sanó al ciego de Betsaida, y a Pedro se le abrieron los ojos para reconocer la verdadera identidad de Jesús por medio de la fe; esta fe era un don del padre celestial. Al proclamar la divinidad de Jesús, Pedro hablaba más con el corazón que con la cabeza. La pregunta de Jesús a los discípulos no tenía por fin el hacer un sondeo sobre las opiniones de a gente o darles un examen de religión; Jesús quería de los suyos una respuesta vivencial de fe. Pedro aún no entendía qué clase de Mesías Jesús iba a ser. Como judíos de su tiempo, Pedro podría pensar en un rey ungido por Dios, en un salvador gloriosos, un líder religioso y político, un milagrero; para Pedro hubiera sido una contradicción pensar en un Mesías que se sacrificaba y que iba a morir. Jesús, por su parte, pensaba en el servicio, sufrimientos y fracasos, enemigos y muerte. El camino hacia el triunfo divino debía pasar por el fracaso humano. El camino a la pascua debía EL CRISTO DE LA FE Por Humberto Beltrán pasar por el Calvario. Pedro, como a veces nosotros, no veía la necesidad del sufrimiento y de la muerte para salvar. No veía que había que aceptar los sufrimientos y las injusticias para poder superarlos y vencerlos. Por eso, Jesús reprendió duramente a Pedro llamándolo Satanás, obstáculo y escándalo, por su manera de pensar humana que solamente buscaba lo fácil y atractivo. Pedro tenía aún mucho que aprender para poder tomar la cruz, abrazándose a Cristo y a su programa de salvación, de modo que un día, al final de su vida, acabara muriendo como el mismo Jesús en una cruz. Jesús no buscaba la pasión y el sufrimiento; los aceptaba como parte de su fidelidad a su misión salvadora y de servicio. Reflexión Quisiera invitarlos hoy a profundizar en esta relación con Cristo. Para eso hay que comenzar con un acto de fe. Pero un acto de fe que no sea solamente con la inteligencia, sino con toda la vida, con todo el corazón. Fe que se traduce en amor y en buenas obras, y que esté encarnada en cada una de nuestras acciones, deseos y pensamientos. Esta fe sin duda alguna puede acarrearnos consecuencias serias: seguir a Cristo no es fácil. El servidor del Señor profetizado por Isaías, tenía que sufrir por serle fiel al Padre. Nuestras oraciones y apoyo están con víctimas sobrevivientes, sus familias y todos afectados por este mal. El arzobispo José H. Que ella nos ayude a tener el coraje que necesitamos para purificar a la Iglesia y renovar nuestro amor por la santidad y nuestra devoción a Jesucristo y su Evangelio ". Debemos apreciar la dignidad de la vida en todas sus estaciones, incluso el camino de los ancianos en el ocaso de sus años, para trabajar hacia el día en que cada niño, nacido y no nacido, sea bienvenido y protegido por la ley.
