2 Welcome Message from President ASEAN ORL-HNF Dear colleagues and friends, It is a great pleasure to welcome my fellow ENT specialists to the 17 th ASEAN ORL-HNS Federation Congress, which will be held during the 3 rd week of November 2017 at the fabulous five-star Meliá Yangon Hotel in Yangon Myanmar. This is a particularly noteworthy event as it will be the first-ever congress hosted by the ENT Society Myanmar, and all of us are working hard to assure that it will be not only the most impressive gathering of ENT specialists in the ASEAN Community, but an equally impressive display of ASEAN unity. With its theme United and Concerted to Move Forward, the 17 th ASEAN ORL-HNS Federation Congress will push ASEAN cooperation to a new level, providing the region s otolaryngologists and head & neck surgeons with a platform to share knowledge and experience, discuss and debate the vital issues, and stay current on technological innovations and surgical techniques for the treatment of a wide range of ENT diseases. With special lectures, symposia, country-specific forums, free academic papers that will encourage all of us to keep moving forward, and social events that will foster networking and camaraderie, the 17 th ASEAN ORL-HNS Federation Congress is the highly anticipated event of the year for ASEAN s ENT specialists, and I look forward to welcoming each of you here personally in exotic Myanmar. 3 Welcome Message from President ASEAN ORL-HNS CONGRESS Dear Colleagues and Friends, As many of you know, the ASEAN Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Congress (ASEAN ORL-HNS Congress) is held every two years and hosted by one of the ASEAN member countries on a rotating basis. Our most recent congress the 16 th ASEAN ORL-HNS Congress in Chiang Mai, Thailand, held on November 2015, was a truly grand event. The 17 th ASEAN ORL-HNS Congress will be held in Yangon, Myanmar from November 2017 at the Meliá Yangon Hotel, and will surely be another grand event to which I am pleased to welcome all specialists in the field from all ASEAN countries and around the world. What is most exciting to me about our congresses in each ASEAN country is the golden opportunity they present to discuss, learn, exchange, acquire new technological know-how, and gain knowledge and insight from the world leaders on the faculty. The Theme of this year s congress is ASEAN ORL-HNS: United and Concerted to Move Forward, and we hope that this conveys the Asian Value of Solidarity and our commitment to working together for the progress of our specialty and the quality of life of our people. The scientific programme will consist of hands-on Pre-Congress Workshops on emerging high-tech surgical techniques, high-powered opening lectures, plenary sessions from our international faculty, and numerous academic presentations on all branches of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The Debate Section, where opposing voices on disputed subjects will be heard, will surely be lively, we are encouraging country-specific symposia and forums from our member countries to stir up the participation of everyone in the ASEAN community. There will also be ample time to network and relax: the Grand Opening Ceremony will be a highlight you won t want to miss, featuring some traditional Burmese excitement that you have probably not experienced before. And on the night of the Gala, all member countries are invited to participate with cultural performances to demonstrate our Asian Unity. Please be assured that you will also have time to explore and soak up some of the wonders of Myanmar, enjoy a succulent dinner on the Irrawaddy River or drift over Pagan in a balloon (you ll need to book months ahead for that popular attraction). In all, the opportunities that await at the 17 th ASEAN ORL-HNS Federation Congress are so boundless that I expect to see unprecedented attendance numbers, and look forward to welcoming you all. 4 About ASEAN ORL-HNS 2017 Welcome to the 17 th ASEAN Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Congress (ASEAN ORL- HNS 2017) and the extraordinary city of Yangon, Myanmar, which will be hosting the congress on November Our theme this year signifies the Asian value of solidarity and working together in a concerted effort to elevate the standards of technology and treatment throughout our region to the highest levels. Toward this goal, the congress will promote cooperation and scientific exchange through a comprehensive programme that covers all the significant advances in the field of otorhinolaryngology through plenary discussions, debates and pre-congress workshops that allow hands-on interaction with our exceptional international faculty. 11 Tourist Information Myanmar is a country transformed, where the military and an inner circle of 20 to 25 elite business families have been replaced by a parliament, an executive branch, a multifaceted business sector and an increasingly outspoken media. As it emerges from five decades of economic and political isolation, Myanmar today has the potential to be Asia s next rising star if it can leverage all of its strengths. These include a strategic location between the region s emerging giants, a rich supply of natural resources and high potential for agricultural development and renewable energy like hydropower, a large youthful population, and vast opportunities for investment. There has never been a more exciting time to visit this extraordinary land with its gilded pagodas, a place where traditions endure and some of the most fascinating areas that were once off-limits to foreigners are now opening up. Fortunately, the pace of change is not so dramatic that simple pleasures of travel in Myanmar like drifting down the Irrawaddy River in an old steamer, relaxing on the beach on the Bay of Bengal, and trekking through pine forests to the villages scattered across the Shan Hills cannot be enjoyed. The people here have yet to be taken in by western fashion trends and the men still wear the saronglike longyi, women are covered in traditional makeup called thanakha, everyone still gets around in trishaws, and most folks are perfectly comfortable walking around barefoot. Yangon is Myanmar s largest and most commercially important city. Its downtown skyline is dominated by the winking wonder of Shwedagon Paya, a dazzling Buddhist temple that attracts pilgrims from all over the world. With its wandering monks in burgundy robes, countless pagodas, and signs written mostly in the local alphabet, Yangon is Asia s most exotic city with a blend of British, Burmese, Chinese and Indian influences. This colourful city will still surprise and delight the most seasoned of travellers with its bustling markets, parks and lakes. This is Burma, wrote Rudyard Kipling. It is quite unlike any place you know about. We hope that all delegates at ASEAPS 2017 and your families will take a little time to discover Myanmar, which is particularly inviting during the very pleasant cool season when the congress will be held. Traveling to Myanmar Yangon International Airport located in Mingaladon, at 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of downtown Yangon, is the primary and busiest international airport in Myanmar. The airport s old terminal is used exclusively for domestic flights, and the new terminal, in operation since May 2007, handles international flights. Airport capacity was boosted to 6 million passengers per year in early All ten Burmese carriers and about 20 international airlines operate out of Yangon International. Although most travellers arriving from international destinations enter Myanmar through Yangon International Airport, some carriers also land at the Mandalay International Airport and the Nap Pyi Taw International Airport. Due to a lack of international carriers operating direct flights from international destinations to Yangon, most visitors will have to travel through other larger destinations in the region such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Singapore.
