3 Text As far back as 1870, tourism pioneers Franz Josef Bucher Durrer and Josef Durrer recognised the potential of the Bürgenberg and transformed the ridge high above Lake Lucerne into a world-renowned tourist destination. After a roughly ten-year planning and construction period, the now 30-building strong resort is to be led into a new golden age with a wide variety of offerings. As holiday residences linked to the adjacent hotel and wellness infrastructure, the Lakeview Residence Villas are a part of the resort s diversification strategy and target the top luxury segment. The assignment called for an original interpretation of luxury while respecting the subtlety demanded by the natural setting. Proceeding from the question How densely can villas be constructed?, the ten residences were conceived as tower-like villas whose exterior resembles the rugged rock formations of the surrounding mountains. Separated by 1.7-metre wide canyons, the residences offer ample space spread over five floors. The villas are connected to the hotel infrastructure through a tunnel and each have a separate entrance for staff. In recognition of the diversity of living and family arrangements, the floors can be distributed among multiple, separately operated households, or indeed multiple villas combined to form a single unit. The ceiling height increases from bottom to top and reaches three metres in the entrance and living floor. With floor-to-ceiling glazing, the view of the lake and mountains is framed only by the stone cladding of shell limestone. In keeping with the locations, the concept encompasses three different villa types: the spacious Rigi villas in the east, with access through a private courtyard and a wide, naturally lit stairway; the Pilatus villas nestled into the slope with their sweeping loggias; and the centrally positioned Rootberg villas with their angular footprint. With the offset placement of the loggias, no two villas are identical. 3
