1 May 2009 Volume 38, No. 5 Editor: Lisa Kelley leezer45@yahoo.com The Bowsprit Commodore, Walter Crawford + Vice Commodore, Chip Spence + Rear Commodore, Harry Armenia COMMODORE S WATCH MAY 2009 The Semi-Annual General Membership meeting was held April 18, with 27 voting memberships represented. The meeting was very constructive and nearly all business was passed unanimously. The Board of Directors election of D.B. & Lois Kline to Life Membership was unanimously approved by the membership. We are fortunate to have members of this caliber that have donated their time, wisdom, and energy to the Club for so many years. The major Bylaws revision was passed with 2 added amendments; 1. The functional assignments of the Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore were reversed (Vice Commodore Docks and Facilities, and Rear Commodore Membership, 2. Should the membership elect both spouses to the Executive Board, each will have a vote at the Board of Directors meetings. The membership authorized purchasing hurricane window coverings for the upcoming season. The 2009 Budget was approved, and extrapolated through the 1 st Quarter of Per the newly revised Bylaws, the Nominating Committee was formed with the election of Hal Peterson, Jo Ann Robertson, and Sylvia Whitworth to the committee. The Board of Directors will elect 2 more to this committee at the May Board meeting. A rather large number of Bay Yacht Club vessels anchored near, or inside the NAS breakwater, to view the NAS Air Show on April 19. What a great show! Bay Yacht Club will be represented by two entries in the del Sol al Sol, St. Petersburg, FL to Isla Mujeres, Mexico (Cancun); Lynn Walton (Susan II) with Chip Spence, and Rick Harrison (KeelNTime). The water is warming, and we have many races, cruises, dinners, and events scheduled for the prime sailing season, so be sure to enjoy as much of the Club camaraderie as possible. 2 BYC PAPARRAZI BURGEE PRESENTATION JIM BAKER BURGEE PRESENTATION TOM AND TONI KANE NEW OFFICERS BOARD MEMBERS FOOD FOR THOUGHT... "A ship is different from anyplace on earth. it's dangerous at sea, as you've surely grasped by now. Dangerous, and separate. A captain has absolute power out there, extending -- and it still does -- to death. To trust a man with the lives of others is a grave thing. Only three principles make it work: authority; responsibility; accountability. "Authority is the root of command. We delegate it only for a time, only in exercise of an office, only as defined by custom and law. Never as an individual, never for very long, never as if by right, never without bounds. "Responsibility defines what a man is trusted with, with the ship, with the conn, whatever. So it's all clear, up front, and everybody understands his duty. "To be accountable means to be subject to justice. To punishment, if you will. If you fail your trust -- are derelict in your duty, misuse your power, make a professional error -- you will pay a price. "In our profession, this accountability is absolute. When a naval officer accepts authority, he knows he will answer for the actions of his ship, whether or not he is directly and personally responsible in the way a civilian court would understand. For it is his responsibility to know and govern all that goes on aboard her, her flaws, her limitations, as well as her strengths. "If error occurs, no matter whose, the fault is rightfully and inevitably his. Each commander knows this and accepts it as part of the job. No previous service, however meritorious, can make up for it." David Poyer The Circle 2

3 3 BYC Racing News and Events Seven boats showed up on April 4 for race #2 of our Club s Saturday Series. Wind was blustery in the 18 to 22 KT range from the SSE. Susan II took line honors with a corrected time of 1:14:59 followed closely by Wind Swept, and Sea Flight. After two races, the series standings are: Boat Skipper Type Total R1 R2 Susan II Walton, Lynn Catalina Brigadoon II Robertson, Jim Tartan Rag Time Eisenberg, Lewis Cal DNC SeaFlight Hiler, Mark Catalina Still Dreamin' Crawford, Walt Hunter Ela'n Swart, Bruce CS 36T 6 6 DNC Wind Swept Frank, Larry Catalina DNC 6 Warrior Peterson, Hal Cal DNF 4 Susi Q Klash, Ed Catalina 27 1 DNC 1 Wand'rin Star Steakley, Steve End 42 0 DNF DNC Starfish Spence, Chip Catalina DNS DNC Remaining races in this series are scheduled for June 6, July 4, August 15, September 12, and October 10. The June 6 event will be a prelude to the Club s pier party and photo shoot later in the afternoon. Susan II and Keel N Time successfully finished the Del Sol Al Sol from St. Petersburg to Isla Mujeres. Congratulations to skippers and crew for representing our club in this offshore race and finishing quickly and safely. Closer to home, in CCYC s Port Aransas on the weekend of April 25, TomKat, (Tom Kane) finished 2 nd All -Sails on Saturday with Doug Weakly at the helm and 1 st on Sunday s return to Corpus. In the 150 class Saturday race, Patrick Gallagher skippered Trial Horse to a 2 nd place finish and Larry Frank in Windswept took 4 th. Megan Gallagher at the helm of Eris and Lisa Kelley on Windswept finished 1 st and 3 rd place respectively on Sunday. Well done to everyone. Race Chairman Jim Robertson 3

4 4 A big Thank You! to all our cooks for April. THE GALLEY SLAVE CO-ORDINATOR CORNER (also known as the Dinner Chairladies' comments) First out of the chute on April 4, were Mary Lee (NOT Mary Lou) and Russ York with their Prairie Schooner Supper of smoked venison sausage, hot Mexican spinach dip followed by grilled flat iron steaks (we learned what those were), ancho chipotle sauce over black bean relish, cheesy jalapeno grits (really good), green salad with cumin lime vinaigrette and pecan pie. Great meal, plus great planning: 60 steaks, 60 meals served. Then, while not scheduled as a dinner, on April 11, our Commodore s wife, Judy Crawford, with the assistance of others, put on a big heavy appetizer feed for everyone in celebration Walt s 6-0 birthday. Not sure of the number of attendees, but we understand the celebration went on well into the night - much past our bed time. Judy must have enjoyed the April 9 event so much, she teamed up with Brenda Spence to provide a King Ranch Chicken Dinner for the general membership meeting on April 18. It was so good that it raised the question: Where did you ladies learn how to cook Chicken Ranch Chicken? The evening of April 25 provided our first opportunity this year for a pot luck dinner. While attendance was sparse (only about 35 folks showed up with pots) the variety of dishes served, covering everything from appetizers to salads, to main dishes to deserts, proved once again that the BYC membership is at its best when organization is at its least. It was a thoroughly delightful evening. In May we will be having the Cinco de Mayo dinner and social (which as a matter of convenience will be held on the Second of May) hosted by K and Bob Jack, assisted by Susie and Ed Portis. The following week, Hal Peterson, hopefully assisted by other men, will be providing a dinner for the ladies, whether or not they are mothers. Our next scheduled dinner after the Mother s Day event is not until May 30, and we have no cook for that date. So, unless we get volunteers, mark it out and scribble in POT LUCK. Cynthia and K PIER PARTY EVENT JUNE 6TH Do you have a new boat? Or just an older one you love? This is your chance to show it off! Pier Party - June 6th We are going to start on C Dock at 5:30 pm and move to B Dock at 6:30 pm followed by the grand finale at the club. If you would like to volunteer to be a host boat Cathy Colley or Lynne Steakley. We would love volunteers from the other docks too and will help you with arrangements to bring your boat to the club. Host boats not only get a chance to show their boat off but they also get a chance provide their favorite appetizer! CATHY COLEY SPECIAL DINNER NOTE! There will be a Mother s Day Dinner on Saturday May 9 starting with a Happy Hour at 6 PM. Master Chef, Hal Peterson will be preparing the meal which will begin at 7 PM. 4

5 5 CRUISIN NOTES There are lots of those friendly people; showing me ways to go, and I never want to loose their inspiration. With the cruising season kicking into high gear, it s time to throw off those lines, let the warm coastal bend winds fill you sails, and have some fun with like minded friends. March found us calling upon our Brethren of the Coast at the PIYC, with eleven or so vessels of the BYC fleet making the voyage to the island. Of course some found the island the hard way; as in they over shot the ICW and ran aground (I think you found the island). For this reason the BYC Cruising Mullet award for March is given to Jim & Sylvia Whitworth of Hail Columbia. But wait! They were not alone in this grounding. On board was none other than our illustrious Commodore, Walt Crawford. I m their leader. Look astern Mr. Commodore, no one is following you. As luck would have it, Tow Boat U.S. just happened to be going by a couple of hours later and finally freed them from dooms grip. I still think the better story was a vessel that was seen going to the wrong island, and was at Ingleside before correcting course. However, this story was absolutely denied by the captain, so he shall remain nameless. About sixty or so BYC members attended a fabulous pot luck dinner, which ended with live entertainment from some dancing girls. You can always count on the PIYC for a good time. April was a busy month with meetings, dinners, and the Texas International Boat Show, so no cruises were scheduled. But wait we re cruisers. We don t need no stinkin schedule. A flotilla was organized to go and test the waters at the Naval Air Station. This was perfect timing because it got them a front row view of the air show. There s nothing like watching your tax dollars at work, while relaxing in comfort on your own yacht. You ll want to mark your calendars for some back to back cruises that promise to be a great time. On May 16 th we will be sailing over to Ingleside cove for the annual Bahia Hee-Hee at the Bahia Marina. This is always a fun gathering of mariners and land dwellers alike. Whether you come by land or sea you ll need to bring a small covered dish or side dish, and some lawn chairs. No need for beverages since we want to help support our host. I did miss-speak when I said that Larry Joe Taylor would be playing (He ll be there for the Bastille Day party in July) instead The Dead Beats will be playing. A grand time is sure to be had by all. Drink up me hearties. Yo- Ho. The following weekend is the Memorial Day cruise. Being that it is a holiday weekend, the voyage will be to Fulton Harbor, and dinner will be on Sunday. Since I will be floating down the Frio River with my family Bob Jack and Harry Armenia will be the cat herders on this one. (Note to Harry: It s Cruise DUDE not Dud.) I ll be looking for reports of foolishness from this cruise in my absence. Remember; Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity. That s why we wander, and follow La Vie Dansante.
