2 1.0. INTRODUCTION The Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) was established by The Vocational Education and Training Act. No 1 of 1994 as revised on 2006 for the purpose of coordinating, regulating, financing, and providing vocational education and training and has offices in nine (9) zones. VETA zonal offices were established in order to coordinate the VET centres in each region, the offices coordinate the exercise of establishing of the new VET centres, registration VTCs, accreditation of VET programmes, coordinate the availability of approved curricula, quality auditing of VET centres, assessment and certification VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING CENTRES IN THE COUNTRY Following the registration exercise carried out in 2009 statistics indicated that more than 400 VTCs were registered in different categories, as of that time. The registration exercise is still going on, based on new directives issued by the national VET Board in At present there are more than 250 VTCs under scrutiny in the zones pending registration JOINING VETA OWNED CENTRES 3.1. Applications to join centres owned by VETA are invited every year in August, through announcement in the media and from VETA s website, Applicants must possess a minimum of standard seven (VII) education; 3.3. Application form may be collected from the nearest VTC owned by VETA. The forms contain information about all these VTCs, including the occupation taught, locations and also whether they are boarding facilities or not; 3.4. The applicant is allowed to do the aptitude tests in the region where he attained the application form but may choose to go to centre in any other region; 3.5. The Aptitude Test is done in October, and the successful candidates are informed in December ready to start of training in January; 2

3 3.6. The successful applicant will be given a joining instruction letter that will point out the necessary requirements. These differ from one centre to another, and also depend on the occupation to be pursued and the type of accommodation required boarding or day; 3.7. In entry, the trainee starts at level I, which is the lowest. Progression thereafter is to levels II and III JOINING OTHER (NON VETA) VTCs Procedures for joining these VTCs depend on arrangements peculiar to the owners. Nonetheless, all these VTCs are VETA registered and the training conforms to standards approved by VETA. The curricula, assessment procedures and certification standards are these approved by the same Authority THE TRAINING FEES In the VETA owned VTCs, the fees for long courses are 60,000/= p.a. for day trainees, and 120,000/= p.a for residential ones. VTCs not owned by VETA have their own rates ranging from 60,000/= to 400,000/= p.a depending on the owner, the chosen occupation and type of accommodation ACCESS TO VTCs (i) Addresses of VTCs owned by VETA are given in this brochure. (ii) Information on other VTCs may be obtained at the Zonal office or at VETA head office and the VETA website. (iii) It is important that applicants should seek the most reliable information about these VTCs because some of them have good advertisements although they have not been registered. 3
