It s a popular itinerary, with plenty of accommodation and dining choices at all stops. Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport. Starting at Arusha, spend your first week exploring a few of the northern parks. Good wildlife-watching combinations include Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park or Ngorongoro plus Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park. Alternatively, head from the airport to Moshi and embark on a Mt Kilimanjaro trek. For either of these options (epic wildlife watching or serious mountain trekking), there are also numerous opportunities for hiking and cultural interaction around Arusha and Moshi. Give the second half of your adventure over to less energetic pursuits. First, either fly to Zanzibar Island or travel overland from Moshi or Arusha and then catch a boat. Once here, divide your week between exploration of Stone Town (Zanzibar Town s historic quarter) and relaxation on the island s beaches Matemwe and Jambiani are just two of the possibilities for getting your fill of white sand. Fly out again from Zanzibar Island, or from nearby Dar es Salaam.

For those with more time and a taste for the offbeat, the region links nicely with western Tanzania. From Dar es Salaam, head west to Morogoro for cultural tours and hiking, or to Mikumi National Park, with its easily spotted wildlife. Next stop: Udzungwa Mountains National Park, for hiking up the steep, lushly vegetated slopes or exploring the surrounding Kilombero area. Alternatively, continue from Mikumi to Iringa, which makes a relaxing base. From Iringa, a two- or three-night detour to Ruaha National Park is well worth the effort, before heading down the Tanzam Hwy to Mbeya. En route are several lovely spots to relax and explore. Once in Mbeya, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area. Options include hiking in the scenic hills around Tukuyu; canoeing, exploring and hiking around Lake Nyasa, using Matema, with its picturesque beach and lush mountains, as a base; and hiking in lovely Kitulo National Park, with its wildflowers and wide vistas. Taking your time, it would be easy enough to spend the first three weeks of your itinerary up to this point. With the remaining time, you could return the way you came, with several days left over at the end for a short stay on Zanzibar Island or Mafia. On Mafia, don t miss a day of diving or snorkelling from a wooden dhow. For those wanting more adventure, we recommend continuing northwest from Mbeya via Sumbawanga to Katavi National Park. This park deserves at least two days, especially in the dry season when wildlife watching is at its best. From Katavi, double back and head down the escarpment to Lake Tanganyika for several days relaxing at Lake Shore Lodge near Kipili before taking the MV Liemba to National Park, or on to Kigoma and perhaps an overnight at nearby Gombe National Park. From Kigoma, take a train, bus or plane back to Dar es Salaam. Alternatively but this will require two to three additional weeks you can continue overland from Kigoma to Mwanza and Lake Victoria, from where you could proceed into the Serengeti and on to Arusha.

For combination itineraries, it s also conveniently sandwiched between Tanzania s northern circuit wildlife parks and Mt Kilimanjaro to the northwest, and the Zanzibar Archipelago to the east. From Kilimanjaro airport, spend time in Moshi before heading southeast to the Usambara Mountains around Lushoto. It s easy to spend up to a week here hiking, exploring and enjoying the hill panoramas. Botanists and birders can venture further to Amani Nature Reserve in the eastern Usambaras, with its cool forest walks and nighttime symphony of insects. With extra time and a tolerance for off-the-beaten-track travel, another possible detour before reaching Lushoto is to the Pare Mountains for hiking and getting to know local Pare culture. Once you ve finished exploring the mountains, travel eastwards to Tanga. This coastal town, with its relaxed ambience, wide streets filled with cyclists, nearby beaches and many nearby excursions, is one of Tanzania s most pleasant urban areas. It s also the starting point for exploring the Pangani area, with its quiet coastline and long history. Many travellers wind up staying here longer than planned. Zanzibar Island is just across the channel from Pangani, and there are regular boat and plane connections linking the island with Pangani and with nearby Tanga. Once on Zanzibar Island, get to know Zanzibar Town s Stone Town, relax on a beach or two or three and perhaps also venture to Pemba for a complete change of pace. After you have finished your exploration of the archipelago, frequent boat and plane connections make it easy to get to Dar es Salaam. Allow a day or several in this crowded, bustling city to see the sights, do some final shopping, enjoy the array of good eateries and perhaps even visit nearby historical Bagamoyo or (with a bit more time) tiny Saadani National Park. An enjoyable way to incorporate these latter destinations into your travels is by making your way down the coast from Pangani to Bagamoyo via lovely Sange beach.

7 25 Dar es Salaam Selous GR # # # # Mafia Kilwa Masoko Kilwa Kisiwani Fanjove Private Island I N D I A N O C E A N PLAN YOUR TRIP Itineraries Lindi Mtwara Mikindani # Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary MP 10 DAYS Selous, Mafia & Beyond This itinerary is ideal for those wanting to get a glimpse of Tanzania s wildlife and beaches away from the more standard northern circuit Zanzibar Archipelago combination. Allow about 10 days for a straight Selous Mafia combination, and up to four weeks for extended versions taking in Kilwa and Mikindani, further south. Starting in Dar es Salaam, spend several days enjoying the city s restaurants and craft shopping, visiting a museum or taking a cultural tourism tour. From Dar es Salaam, there are daily buses in the dry season to Selous Game Reserve, but it s a long, rough ride. There s also a slow train, and daily flights. The Selous is a magnificent reserve, and well worth at least three to four days enjoying its fine lodges, boat safaris, wildlife and amazing night sounds, especially hippos grunting in the Rufiji River. From Selous, there are daily flights to Mafia, just offshore. Spend the remaining few days of your stay here in one of the lovely island lodges, diving and snorkelling, trying to spot whale sharks or sailing to some of the smaller islands to get a glimpse into the archipelago s fascinating Swahili culture and long history. From Mafia, take one of the several daily flights back to Dar es Salaam. For adventurous travellers with more time and a taste for the offbeat, continue from Selous Game Reserve (or from the mainland coast opposite Mafia island, for those who depart Mafia by boat) to Tanzania s far south. Sleepy Kilwa Masoko makes a pleasant destination for a day or two. The town is also the springboard to the famed ruins at Kilwa Kisiwani, just offshore. Another possible excursion from Kilwa Masoko is to nearby Fanjove Private Island, which has a lovely, upmarket lodge, and which is easily combined with both Mafia and Kilwa. Once you ve finished exploring in the Kilwa area, continue by bus south via Lindi to the Mtwara area, where Mikindani with its coconut plantations and long history and the beach at Msimbati, in the Mnazi Bay- Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park, are the highlights.

It s also easily combined with wildlife watching in Serengeti National Park. From Arusha, head west to Serengeti, stopping en route in Karatu to enjoy the cool and stunning highlands, and in Ngorongoro Crater for wildlife and magnificent views from the crater rim. Following exploration of central Serengeti, continue into the park s Western Corridor, which is especially rewarding around May and early June. Exit the park at Ndabaka gate, from where it s an easy bus ride on good tarmac north to lively Musoma. With extra time and a taste for adventure, consider varying the above approach to the Serengeti to arrive in the park via Lake Natron: after leaving Arusha, continue west on good tarmac toward Karatu. Before reaching Karatu, turn north at the lively market village of Mto wa Mbu toward Engaresero and Lake Natron. Spend at least one night at Lake Natron, ideally two or three. Nearby, and dominating vistas, is the starkly majestic Ol Doinyo Lengai a rewarding trek for adventurous travellers. Once finished exploring the Lake Natron area, continue northwest via Loliondo village and the honey-producing village of Ololosokwan to enter the Serengeti via the park s northerly Klein s gate. Spend several days exploring the northern Serengeti before heading south toward central Serengeti, then joining the main route through the Western Corridor toward Musoma. In Musoma, it s easy to spend several days becoming acquainted with the region s many cultures and enjoying sunrise and sunset views over Lake Victoria. Once ready to move on, take the bus south to Mwanza, with its low-key vibe and good facilities. Continue west around the lake toward pretty, prosperous Bukoba and the heart of the ancient Haya kingdom. There are many cultural tours to see waterfalls, cave paintings and rural homesteads that offer an excellent introduction to Haya life and culture. En route to Bukoba, don t miss Rubondo Island National Park, with its magnificent birding. Once finished, connections are easy into Rwanda (at Rusumu Falls) or Uganda (Mutukula). This itinerary can be rearranged with Mwanza as the starting point, with the advantage that Serengeti safaris are generally cheaper to arrange from Mwanza than from Arusha.

Four weeks is the minimum, but there s enough to do to keep you busy for twice that long. Arusha makes a convenient starting point. Allow up to a week here, perhaps taking in a northern circuit safari or some cultural tourism activities. From Arusha, head southwest toward Babati, where you can detour for a hike up Mt Hanang. Afterwards, continue on to Dodoma via Singida, which is completely off the beaten track. Take a stroll near Lake Singidani and visit Singida s small museum. Alternatively, head south from Babati directly to Dodoma, stopping en route at the Kondoa Rock-Art Sites. Dodoma itself Tanzania s official capital is worth a day or two, walking the wide streets, admiring the religious architecture and possibly visiting the Bunge (parliament). From Dodoma, continue south on a recently upgraded road to Iringa, as well as the gateway to the lovely Southern Highlands to the southwest. From here, you could travel southwest toward Njombe, Mbeya or Tukuyu. Otherwise, head northeast toward Morogoro, stopping en route at Udzungwa Mountains National Park for several days of hiking, and at Mikumi National Park for wildlife watching. Wildlife watching is also easily incorporated into this itinerary in Ruaha National Park, which is readily accessed from Iringa. In Morogoro, allow a day or two to explore the Ulugurus on a cultural tourism program tour before continuing east to Dar es Salaam or northeast toward Pangani and Tanga. Once on the coast, it s easy to arrange a detour to the Zanzibar Archipelago, with flights from Dar es Salaam, Pangani and Tanga and sea connections from Pangani and Dar es Salaam. After relaxing along the coast, head to the Usambara Mountains for hiking in the hills before continuing on to Moshi, home of the Chagga people and of Mt Kilimanjaro. It s easy to spend several days here exploring the mountain s lower slopes and enjoying Moshi s laid-back vibe. From Moshi, take the bus back to Arusha or to Kilimanjaro airport and your flight home.

20 Lonely Planet Publications Pty Ltd Anthony Ham Northern Tanzania Anthony is a freelance writer and photographer who specialises in Spain, East and Southern Africa, the Arctic and the Middle East. In 2001, after years of wandering the world, Anthony finally found his spiritual home when he fell irretrievably in love with Madrid on his first visit to the city. Less than a year later, he arrived there on a one-way ticket, with not a word of Spanish and not knowing a single person in the city. When he finally left Madrid 10 years later, Anthony spoke Spanish with a Madrid accent, was married to a local and Madrid had become his second home. Now back in Australia, Anthony continues to travel the world in search of stories. Helena Smith Central Tanzania, Southern Highlands Helena is an award-winning writer and photographer covering travel, outdoors and food she has written guidebooks on destinations from Fiji to northern Norway. Helena is from Scotland but was partly brought up in Malawi, so Africa always feels like home. She also enjoys global travel in her multicultural home area of Hackney and wrote, photographed and published Inside Hackney, the first guide to the borough. Her 1000-word autobiography won Vogue s annual writing contest and she s a winner of the Independent on Sunday s travel writing competition. As well as working as a guidebook author, Helena is a travel and portrait photographer. She was senior photographer at the Edinburgh Film Festival, where she worked for three consecutive years, and has exhibited her work at Rich Mix and Floradita.

21 OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end broke but inspired they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born. Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Franklin, London, Melbourne, Oakland, Dublin, Beijing and Delhi, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony s belief that a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse. OUR WRITERS Mary Fitzpatrick Curator, Dar es Salaam, Northeastern Tanzania, Southeastern Tanzania Originally from the USA, Mary spent her early years dreaming of how to get across an ocean or two to more exotic locales. Following graduate studies, she set off for Europe. Her fascination with languages and cultures soon led her further south to Africa, where she has spent the past two decades living and working as a professional travel writer all around the continent. She focuses particularly on East and Southern Africa, including Mozambique and Tanzania. Mary has authored and co-authored many guidebooks for Lonely Planet, including Mozambique; Tanzania; South Africa, Lesotho & Swaziland; East Africa; West Africa; and Egypt. Mary also wrote the Plan, Understand and Survival Guide chapters for this book. Ray Bartlett Western Tanzania, Lake Victoria Ray has been travel writing for nearly two decades, bringing Japan, Korea, Mexico, and many parts of the United States to life in rich detail for top-industry publishers, newspapers and magazines. His acclaimed debut novel, Sunsets of Tulum, set in Yucatán, was a Midwest Book Review 2016 Fiction pick. Among other pursuits, he surfs regularly and is an accomplished Argentine tango dancer. Follow him on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or contact him for questions via his website. Ray currently divides his time between homes in the USA, Japan and Mexico. David Else Zanzibar Archipelago David is a professional freelance writer specialising in travel, trekking, cycling, walking and outdoor adventure activities. Since the 1980s he s been writing guidebooks for Lonely Planet and other publishers, plus a wide range of travel topics for magazines, newspapers and websites. In three decades of covering Africa, David wrote many Lonely Planet guidebooks including West Africa and Southern Africa and detailed guides such as Malawi, Zambia, Gambia & Senegal and Trekking in East Africa. He now lives in the UK, where he s worked on local LP titles including several editions of guides to Great Britain and England. Beyond guidebooks, David writes regular articles for lonelyplanet.com. His words and photos have also appeared in the travel section of The Independent newspaper, Travel Africa magazine, Cycling Weekly magazine and Lonely Planet magazine. David continues to travel widely by train, plane, car, bike or on foot. Recent trips have taken him from France and Spain to Mexico and Morocco, via the ice-cold thrills of Greenland and the epic landscapes of India.
