1 SUN CITY GRAND RV CLUB February 2017 Happy Valentine s Day! President Penny Betcher president@grandrv.org Wow, Boy Howdy, was that an amazing January meeting! We had one hundred and twenty eight attend the January meeting. Ninety-seven members and thirty-one guests. We even gained eight new members: Dick and Paula Wilson Russ and Gayle Bayne Larry and Jane Warren Dave and Linda Grunhurd A hearty welcome to our new members!! Not all our meetings have that many people but, all our meetings are an opportunity to meet and talk to new people. NEXT MEETING February 21st GUEST SPEAKER! Peoria Ave. Peoria, AZ (623) Hours: Monday Saturday 8am-7pm It was an interesting meeting and we even learned a little about the Arizona National Parks from our guest speaker Sherry Plowman. I have more of the maps that she left for us and will bring them to the next meeting if you missed picking one up. Remember to sign into the meetings with your CAM card. It s a CAM requirement and admittance to the meeting will be denied without your card! Also remember to update your information on the website. I know of several people who have purchased new rigs and have not updated their information.yet. The Wagon masters need current information when making reservations. We have some great Day Events and Rally s lined up for this spring. Check the website for space and availability. If the Rally or trip you want to go on is full, you can always put your name on the wait list, something always seems to happen and often folks on the wait list make it on the rally. Keep checking the website for new rally s also. And it s not too early to think about next fall for a rally. Many of the State and National Parks need six or eight month reservations. 2 Vice President Tony Marotti Josh Deards, Service Manager from State Trailer RV and Outdoor Supply, will be the speaker at the February meeting. He will be speaking about tires, getting your RV ready and the services offered by State Trailer. We are requesting that questions be submitted on index cards to make it easier for him to respond. Trish Schwab Membership If you missed the January meeting, then you missed the largest crowd ever to attend a Grand RVers meeting! We had 128 people in attendance 97 members and 31 guests. Of those 31 guests, 8 joined the Club that night! Our newest members are Dick and Paula Wilson, Russ and Gayle Bayne, Larry and Jane Warren, Dave and Linda Grunhurd. Welcome! We now have 160 paid members. Our Entertainment Committee, which plans all of the fun, food and festivities for our club, is looking for members to join their team. Dale & Carroll Rees and Dan & Nancy Newman will be cycling out at the end of 2017 so it is important to have members who will have a year of experience under their belt before 2018 rolls around. I went to visit my children and grandchildren after the first of the year and, in the spirit of sharing, they gave me their colds! Ugh! Thank you, Penny, for taking over my duties at the meeting. Well, we are off to a great start this year with 11 events listed on the web site. I have added a new event that I think will be a lot of fun (#11 below). It should appeal to ALL of us. It is K1 Speed Kart Racing! This is indoor Kart racing. I have talked to people who have done this and they say it is a lot of fun! See below for more details on this possible event. 5 Here is a listing of all day events. I have listed the events that are date sensitive first: 1. February 23rd - Good Sam RV Super Show Join us at the inaugural Good Sam RV Super Show! See RVs on display, exhibit booths, kids activities, music & fun! There is also special Good Sam Club Member pricing! This is one event you won t want to miss! 2. March 7th thru 10th - FMCA's 95th International Convention and RV Expo. The welcome mat is out for FMCA s 95th International Convention and RV Expo. You re going to love Rawhide Western Town & Event Center in Chandler, AZ the team of event planners picked it out from many options because they knew it was exactly the kind of place FMCA members and guests will enjoy. 3. March 29th OR March 30th - Desert Caballeros Western Museum & Lunch Event Leader: Ann Kronenwetter Come see the Cowgirl UP art show featuring the finest in western painting, drawing and sculpture. 4. Date: TBD - Miniature Horse Viewing and Hotdogs. Event Leader: Eileen Provenzavo This trip will probably take place in March. Eileen would like it to be an afternoon event with a viewing of her miniature horses and then a possible bon-fire afterward with hotdogs. 5. Date TBD - Palo Verde Energy Education Center. 6. Date TBD - Amazon.com Distribution Center. Event Leader: Linda Jakobsen. This event is on hold while trying to determine a date. Currently all tours are booked through Linda is looking into possible cancellations to see if we can get in this year. 7. Date: TBD - Wrigley Manson and Lunch 8. Date: TBD - High Tea at "The Spicery in our 1895 Home" Come for "High Tea" stay for the charm and shopping in old town Glendale. 9. Date TBD - Butterfly Wonderland - A Rainforest Experience. 10. Date: TBD - NEW...NEW... K1 Speed Kart Racing! For a thrill, let's go racing! Experience the best indoor kart racing in Phoenix. No experience is required. They will provide you with all instructions and rules. They provide the karts - you provide the skill (or lack thereof)! We can combine this with a congratulatory meal after the races! Weekday packages require 8 participants and weekend packages require 9 participants. All races have a maximum of 12 karts on the track. 6 Ray Granzow Trip Director Mike Schwab Trip Director UPCOMING RALLIES HUNTINGTON BEACH Huntington Beach, California March 5 th 10 th, 2017 Wagon Masters: Lou and Eileen Provenzano Sunset Vista Camping Facility is located right on the beach in Huntington Beach, California and just south of the Huntington Beach Pier. Visitors are often at a loss for words when they arrive and get their first look at the world of Surf City USA miles of broad sands, surfers catching waves near the pier, and sunsets that paint the sky in vivid hues of pink, violet, and orange. This glorious ocean scene is only the beginning of what awaits when you visit Southern California s classic beach town. With 10 miles of beaches and a lively downtown filled with shops and restaurants, Huntington Beach blends surfing s relaxed spirit with a contemporary style which creates an ocean side destination like nowhere else on the California coast. CIVIL WAR IN THE SOUTHWEST Picacho Peak RV Park March 17 th 20 th, 2017 WAGON MASTER NEEDED! Each year hundreds of spectators descend on Picacho Peak State Park located half way between Phoenix and Tucson to watch reenactments of an Arizona Civil War skirmish. Visitors come from around the country to watch more than 200 Actors with authentic gear reenact the furthest west Civil War battle. There are 8 rigs signed up and the RV park still has available sites. All that is needed is a Wagon Master. February 2017 Grand RVers Page 6

7 TUCSON Lazy Days RV KOA March 21 st 25 th, 2017 Wagon Masters: Ford and Snaque Rollo Asst.Wagon Masters: Mike and Trish Schwab The Rally has 15 spots and we are FULL, but we'll keep a cancellation list, so please sign up if you'd like to come. We'll notify you as soon as we have an opening. Total cost for the trip will be $ plus the $10.00 application fee. Depart Sun City Grand March 21 st and departing Tucson on March 25 th. Tucson is always a fun place to visit. There are great restaurants, Golf, the San Xavier mission, the DeGrazia Gallery, Biosphere 2 and the Pima Air and Space Museum to visit. Within an hour or two drive are artsy Tubac, Tumacacori National Park, Tombstone, Kartchner Caverns and the Chiricahua Mountains. The weather should be excellent with average temps in the high 60's to mid-70's. We ll have a pizza party the first night (Tuesday) in camp and pre-dinner, wine-30 parties each night thereafter. We ll gather each evening to discuss our day s activities and share ideas. You re on your own for meals on Wed, Thurs, Fri. Our site, 1531, has a patio with a fireplace. We ll have our parties there each night. We ll provide plates, forks and napkins as well as cold drinks and water for the pizza party. As soon as the group list is settled, we ll assign snack patrol to a few rigs for each of the 3 following parties. We ll ask you to bring a snack to share and your own drinks of choice. 8 BARLEENS Superstition Sunrise RV Resort March 30 th April 2 nd, 2017 WAGONMASTERS NEEDED! The Barleens Rally has become an annual favorite. The talented entertainers at Barleens AZ Opry provide a memorable show of music and fun. But there is more than the Opry. Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flats, Mesa Market Place, Superstition Mountain Museum and the Goldfield Ghost Town are close by. There are many restaurants in the vicinity. The dates are tentative and will be set by the yet to be determined Wagon Master. The AZ Opry books quickly so reservations must be made soon. ROCKY POINT Bonita RV Park Puerto Penasco, Mexico April 3 rd 8 th, 2017 Wagon Masters: Sam and Sandy Pacione Bonita RV Park in Puerto Penasco, Mexico will be home for 5 nights. Enjoy a sunset cruise, deep sea fishing, a Tequila factory tour, and grilled shrimp on the beach. You can sit in your chair and watch your rig get washed and waxed for only $1.50 a foot. Sam and Sandy have reserved 10 spots. The price has gone up $3 a day to a whopping $20 dollars for a full hook-up. You will need to purchase Mexican auto insurance before crossing the border. You will also need your passport to re-enter the USA. There is currently a waiting list. If you are interested in going be sure to sign up on the website in case there are cancellations. 9 VERDE VALLEY COTTONWOOD - JEROME Distant Drums RV Park April 10 th 14 th, 2017 Wagon Masters: Mike and Marty Holloway We will be staying at Distant Drums RV Park in Camp Verde, about 100 miles from Sun City Grand. It is a clean and spacious park and rated by Good Sam Club. The towns of Cottonwood, Jerome and Sedona are a short drive away. The April weather should be perfect! The dates are now firm as we have reserved 13 sites which have been filled. Please sign up anyway to create a waiting list. Almost always there are cancellations as we get closer to the Rally dates. The cost for the 4 night stay is $ When paying, remember to add the $10 trip fee for a total of $ There is no up-charge for pets. ***Please note: Most of the sites are back-in sites. Your Wagon Masters, Mike and Marty Holloway, want to create a trip with your interests at heart. We will be listening to your preferences and setting up those outings for you, if possible. There are many activities available not far from our RV Park. We currently are planning these optional activities: Verde Valley Train Ride on Thursday, April 13th ($57.69 per person). The casual grace of train travel never goes out of style. From the moment you step aboard the fully restored vintage train, you are whisked back to a time of luxurious and leisurely train travel. This four-hour excursion takes you on a 20-mile journey through 100 years of history. FP7 locomotives, two of only 10 remaining in North America, are the muscle that pulls the renovated cars. Indoor cars are climate-controlled and each has a restroom. Comfort able seating, thoughtful décor and friendly, informative attendants add to the beauty of this remote wilderness without sacrificing the luxury of comfort. Wine Tasting Tours, self or guided (There are several wineries in and around Cottonwood) Chuckwagon Supper and Western Stage Show at the Blazin' M Ranch ($35) After we arrive at the RV park on Monday, April 10th, Mike and Marty will be hosting a burger and brat dinner. Wagon Masters: Craig & Maryl Weady What more can you say about the Grand Canyon than Spectacular? There are sites reserved for 7 rigs at the Trailer Village RV Park in the Grand Canyon for 3 nights. There are also 14 spots at the Zion River Resort at Zion National Park for 3 nights and finally 14 spots at Wahweap Campground in Page, AZ for 3 nights. The first seven couples on the list are confirmed for Grand Canyon, Zion and Page. We are able to get another 7 spots at Zion and Page. Depending on the size of your rig, there may be availability at Trailer Village RV Park at the Grand Canyon. The total cost for the 12 nights is estimated to be $450. To sign up for your own online newsletter go to: azstateparks.gov BIRD WALKS AND PONTOON BOAT TOURS Ongoing: Patagonia Lake State Park The Visitor Center is open from 8:30am until 4pm five days a week (Thursdays through Mondays) until the first week of April Bird walks are held on Mondays and Fridays at 9 a.m. Walks generally last about two to three hours. The popular Pontoon Boat tours are held on weekends but reservations are required by calling (520) FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS February 8-12: Tubac Presidio State Historic Park 9am-5pm The Tubac Chamber of Commerce is proud to sponsor the 58th Annual Festival of the Arts. The major event of the year for Tubac showcases the work of hundreds of visiting artists and craft persons from around the country and Canada. The food court features a variety of cuisines. FLORENCE HISTORIC HOME TOUR February 11: Town of Florence, McFarland SHP 10am-4pm Visitors to the 32nd Annual Historic Florence Home Tour will view diverse architectural styles in over 17 homes and historical structures. Visitors walk the tour route and enjoy re-enactments and drawing workshops. All visitors are welcome to enjoy these events as well as the historical homes and buildings. BUFFALO SOLDIERS February 18: Fort Verde State Historic Park 9am-5pm Join us for the annual Buffalo Soldier re-enactment. Bring your loved ones to Fort Verde State Historic Park and learn about history with the Buffalo Soldiers, watch a vintage baseball game with players dressed in period replica uniforms, learn how to cook homemade Dutch oven meals, and be a part of the flag raising and lowering ceremonies.
