1 Hawai i Island s Lava Disaster Report October 2018 May 3 rd marked the day when the first fissure erupted, quickly followed by 5.1 and 6.2 earthquakes that shook most of east Hawai`i. By the start of June there were a total of 24 fissures in the East Rift Zone and by end of August, over 700 homes destroyed due to lava flow and thousands of residents were left homeless. Fissure 8 became the most active of the 24 fissure and lit up Hawai`i Island s lower Puna skies with a fiery orange glow for more than 3 months, leaving an indelible etched memory for all residents who lived on the island during this impactful time. From the moment of the first eruption, communities island-wide came together to malama their family, friends and neighbors who were adversely affected. Donations of food, water and supplies were accepted by The Food Basket at both its Hilo and Kona warehouses then distributed through more than 106 partner agencies island-wide. Aloha and abundance marked the over-whelming response from local, national, and international donors with over 240,000 pounds of food, water and supplies coming by the container load to help the affected communities. These items provided essential relief, from comfort child-friendly food items, to walkers and wheelchairs for our elderly and facemasks and air purifiers for those in communities affected by the hazardous Sulphur dioxide fumes. Supplies and goods donated ranged from non-perishable food items, cases upon cases of water, personal hygiene kits, first-aid kits, baby diapers, laundry and cleaning supplies, camping tents and collapsible lanterns, MRE s, clothing, pet food and a wide-range of miscellaneous household supplies. 1
2 2 The Food Basket Inc. Hawai`i Island s Food Bank
3 It took a Village to bring much needed disaster relief to those affected by the Kilauea Lava Flow event that began May 3 rd, At The Food Basket, 40 and 20 fully packed containers arrived weekly, our daily operations doubled, and warehouse space reached maximum capacity. However, morale remained high and at the end of the day, both The Food Basket staff and volunteers alike closed the day knowing that they were achieving The Food Basket s mission of Ending Hunger in Hawai`i County. As of September 30, 2018: 240,777 lbs. of food, water and supplies has been donated and received. 191,055 lbs. has been distributed. 21,886 lbs. of food- specifically for congregate meals has been distributed. 27,836 lbs. of undistributed items, including personal hygiene-care kits, baby diapers, and baby care items, household items (paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap, sanitary wipes) camping gear (tents, grilling, MRE s meal boxes, mosquito repellent). Operations: When the 2018 lower Puna eruption started on May 3 rd, relief efforts became the core program for The Food Basket. Most of the organization s resources - personnel, vehicles, and facilities were directed to this emergency effort. Food banking operations continued to serve the needs of the community; however, normal fundraising, grant writing and program development were largely put on hold. Most staff worked long hours and weekends in order to keep up with the needs in the lava affected communities. 9 Mahalo to Convoy of Hope, which shipped a 40 container filled with supplies; pallets of beverages, MRE s, 5-gallon buckets, medical supplies, canned protein and tents/tarps. Convoy of Hope volunteers helped with the unloading of the container and at the distribution sites. Deliveries were made to Salvation Army- Pahoa distribution, Pahoa & Kea`au Red Cross shelters, Bodacious Women of Nanawale distribution, and Hawai i Service Network. 9
10 Distribution: Items came in and went out quickly. Nearly 215,000 pounds of food, water and supplies were distributed to partner agencies, shelters, distribution centers and walk-in lava-affected evacuees. While the entire affected area was served, The Food Basket worked closely with two main distribution sites. Delivering by the bulk load, these sites welcomed any item or supply that came through with quick turn-around in distribution. In the first few weeks, deliveries were made twice a week, 4 to 8 pallet loads at a time. Gradually, things quieted down as recipient s needs were met with the distribution sites slowing and eventually ceasing operations after 4 months. TFB served both sites from start to finish - even down to picking up the remaining empty pallets and boxes. The Salvation Army s Distribution Center was located in the heart of Pahoa and the closest site to where evacuees were had structured shelter. This site operated just shy of 4 months; on a Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday schedule 9 AM 12 PM and 2 PM - 5PM, with congregate meals 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals were a collaboration of: Salvation Army staff/volunteers; volunteers from Hawai`i Island s faith community; University of Hawai`i s Community College Culinary Arts Program Director Chef Shawn and his students; World Central Kitchen; and multiple local restaurants. The Bodacious Women also delivered supplies to strategically located Matson containers in Kapoho at Green Hill, and in Sea View Estates and Kalapana.
