1 20 Weeks to Get Prepared Creating a complete family disaster kit does not have to break the bank. You can pick up a handful of items during your weekly shopping trips to help build your kit in no time flat. Georgetown County Emergency Management recommends you have food, water, and supplies to last for seven days following a disaster for your family members and pets. The Things to Do and Shopping Lists are guides to assist you in creating your family s disaster kits. Every family and every situation is different, so make the necessary changes to the list to fit your family s needs.
2 Week 1 January 1 st If you have not already done so, make a Family Disaster Plan including your pets. If you do have a current Family Disaster Kit, rotate out soon to be expired foods and medicines and replace with fresh items. 1 gallon of water* 1 can of meat* 1 canned fruit* 1 can of vegetables* Portable AM/FM radio or NOAA Weather Radio with batteries or a hand crank *per person Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
3 Week 2 January 8 th Flashlight and batteries Heavy-duty work gloves Plastic safety goggles Pliers Screwdriver Utility knife Vise grips
4 Week 3 January 15 th Purchase and install smoke detectors if needed. Extra batteries for flashlights, radios, and smoke detectors Broom, mop, and bucket 1 bottle of shampoo 1 box of non-latex gloves 1 package of sanitary wipes and/or liquid sanitizer 1 large tube of toothpaste Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
5 Week 4 January 22 nd 1 gallon of water* 1 can of meat* 1 canned fruit* 1 can of vegetables* Screwdriver 1 can of ready-to-eat soup* 1 package of disposable plates 1 package of disposable utensils *per person Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
6 Week 5 January 29 th 2 rolls of toilet paper 1 canned fruit* 1 box of crackers 1 jar of jelly or jam 1 jar of peanut butter 1 box of dry cereal 1 large can or bottle of juice *per person Note: Always check expiration dates. 7 Week 6 February 5 th 1 box of heavy-duty garbage bags 1 box of large plastic zip-top food bags 1 package of disposable cups 1 package of disposable plates 1 package of disposable utensils 2 rolls of paper towels 1 package of aluminum foil
8 Week 7 February 12 th Things to do: Establish an out-of-state emergency contact and share that information with your family. 1 gallon of water* 1 can of meat* 1 canned fruit* 1 can of vegetables* 1 box of quick energy snacks *per person Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
9 Week 8 February 19 th Assorted nails Crowbar Duct tape Hammer Hatchet Plywood and fasteners to cover windows Wood screws Multi-Tool
10 Week 9 February 26 th Things to do: Check batteries in smoke detectors. 1 gallon of water* 1 can of meat* 1 canned fruit* 1 can of vegetables* Instant coffee, tea, or powdered drink mix 1 box of heavy-duty garbage bags Plastic wrap Aspirin, acetaminophen, and/or ibuprofen *per person Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
11 Week 10 March 5 th Things to do: Locate your water meter and electrical shut-off valve. Hydrogen peroxide Rubbing alcohol Petroleum jelly Thermometer Tweezers Personal hygiene products Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
12 Week 11 March 12 th Things to do: Take pictures and/or video of the contents of your home. Fire extinguisher Weather radio Whistle Scissors
13 Week 12 March 19 th Facial tissues 1 large box of plastic zip-top food bags Unscented liquid bleach Matches (placed in a waterproof container) Diapers and baby food if needed Items for denture care if needed Note: Always check expiration dates. Make sure the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
14 Week 13 March 26 th Things to do: Obtain cash and/or traveler s checks. 1 gallon of water* 1 can of meat* 1 box of dry cereal 1 box of crackers 1 can of ready-to-eat soup and/or pastas* * per person Note: Always check expiration dates. Make sure the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
15 Week 14 April 2 nd Liquid hand soap Liquid dish soap Aluminum foil 1 package of disposable cups 2 rolls of paper towels 2 rolls of toilet paper
16 Week 15 April 9 th Antacids Aspirin, acetaminophen, and/or ibuprofen Anti-diarrhea medicine Antiseptic First aid kit Items for denture care if needed Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
17 Week 16 April 16 th Assorted containers with lids Manual can opener Assorted safety pins Ice chest Spare glasses and/or contacts and supplies if needed Note: Always check expiration dates. Make the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
18 Week 17 April 23 rd Things to do: Make sure your pet s vaccinations are current; get a copy of the records from your veterinarian. 1 gallon of water* 1 can of meat* 1 canned fruit* 1 can of vegetables* 1 can of ready-to-eat soup and/or pastas* 1 box of quick energy snacks * per person Note: Always check expiration dates. Make sure the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
19 Week 18 April 30 th Things to do: Trim trees, fix loose gutters and fence boards. Handsaw and/or chain saw and fuel Tarp for temporary roof repair Battery-powered camping lantern and batteries Blankets and/or sleeping bags and pillow* Portable camp stove or grill and fuel Mosquito repellent * per person Note: Always check expiration dates. Make sure the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
20 Week 19 May 7 th Things to do: Photocopy important documents and store safely in a waterproof container or sealable freezer bag. Waterproof plastic container with lid for important papers Extra batteries for flashlights and radio Deck of cards, gamebooks and pens/pencils Extra hearing aid batteries if needed Two-week supply of food and water for pets if needed Pet treats and toys if needed Pet medications if needed Note: Always check expiration dates. Make sure the items last as long as possible (at least through November 30 th ).
21 Week 20 May 14 th Things to do: Review your Family Disaster Plan and Pet Plan with family members. Make sure your out-of-state contact s phone information has not changed and share with family members if so. 1 gallon of water* 1 can of meat* 1 can of ready-to-eat soup and/or pastas* 1 can of vegetables* 1 box of quick energy snacks 1 box of dry cereal Extra prescription medication *per person Note: Always check expiration dates.
