1 August, 2017 Volume 18, Issue 8 G.W.R.R.A., REGION H, TEXAS DISTRICT, CHAPTER W Chapter TX-W Director Cindy Harris Welcome the heat of August!!! Hope everyone is staying cool since we keep having temps in the 100 s. We had a great turnout for our first Saturday morning meeting. The breakfast and service was great and I believe everyone s meals were good. There was no ride after but it was great seeing everyone and socializing. We talked about past rides and upcoming rides (even though the Chapter Director had dates and places wrong LOL). I believe this is going to work out great as we have some good rides scheduled for the next couple of months. Do you remember a time you were always excited to ride your motorcycle? Do you remember planning trips and rides to encompass savory scenery, notable points of interest, stretches of endless miles, twisties that almost turned back on themselves, and remembered stories almost perfect? And during the year we try and think of other places to ride for next year or someone tells about a place they went and you try and remember where that was? We read many articles and publications on places to see and go do but somehow we never get there. Or we plan the rides but never get to ride it. Lynn and I have collected lots of maps and rides that we have been on or places we want to go. And then there is the issue of what is on those weekends. Can we get off of work together? Does the family take president over that weekend. Do we have enough money for the trip? Are we camping or staying at a motel? Amazing how just planning one trip involves so much. Well here are our scheduled rides for the upcoming months and I hope you plan on riding with us or just go camping with us. If you have a special place you would like to go and think we would enjoy it to please let me know so we can plan it. Upcoming Chapter W Rides: Aug 14 Frank Wyatt Birthday Dinner at Spring Creek BarBQue on Hwy 6 at 4:30 pm Aug 29 Sept 2 Wing Ding in Grapevine, TX (Labor Day Weekend) Sept 22, 23 & 24 Red Knights ride to Talamina Trail. 3 VOLUME 18 ISSUE 8 AUGUST, 2017 Arrive Prepared. Arrive on time with a full tank of gas. Group Riding Tips PAGE 3 Hold a Rider's Meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals. Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone's riding skills and the group's riding style. Keep the Group to a Manageable Size. Ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep rider. Ride Prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. Ride in Formation. The staggered formation allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed. Periodically Check Riders Following in your Rear View Mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.

7 VOLUME 18 ISSUE 8 AUGUST, 2017 PAGE 7 FLEXING OUR WINGS A LITTLE TEXAS HISTORY Some August Texas Events August 2nd, 1882 On this day in 1882, the commissioners of Pecos County officially appointed Roy Bean justice of the peace. He retained the post, with short interruptions, until he retired voluntarily in As he gained fame for being an eccentric and original interpreter of the law, the Kentucky native became known as the "Law West of the Pecos." For example, when a man carrying forty dollars and a pistol fell off a bridge, Bean fined the corpse forty dollars for carrying a concealed weapon. The forty dollars covered the man's funeral expenses. Bean died in his saloon on March 16, 1903, of lung and heart ailments and was buried in the Del Rio cemetery. His shrewdness, audacity, unscrupulousness, and humor, aided by his knack for self-dramatization, made him an enduring part of American folklore. August 17th, 1786 On this day in 1786, frontier icon and Alamo defender Davy Crockett was born in Tennessee. He began his military career as a scout in the Tennessee militia in 1813 and was elected to the Tennessee legislature in After a turbulent political career, during which he split with President Andrew Jackson, a fellow Tennessean, and acquired a national reputation as a sharpshooter, hunter, and yarn-spinner, Crockett grew disenchanted with the political process and decided to explore Texas. He set out in November 1835 and reached San Antonio de Béxar in February 1836, shortly before the arrival of Antonio López de Santa Anna. Crockett chose to join Col. William B. Travis, who had deliberately disregarded Jackson sympathizer Sam Houston's orders to withdraw from the Alamo, and died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, August 20th, 1866 On this day in 1866, President Andrew Johnson, declaring that "the insurrection in the State of Texas has been completely and everywhere suppressed and ended," officially ended the Civil War by issuing a proclamation of peace between the United States and Texas. Johnson had declared a state of peace between the U.S. and the other ten Confederate states on April 2, The last land battle of the Civil War took place at Palmito Ranch near Brownsville on May 13, 1865, more than a month after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. August 21st, 1968 On this day in 1968, Staff Sgt. Marvin Young died near Ben Cui, Vietnam. The native of Alpine, Texas, had graduated from Permian Basin High school and attended Odessa Junior College. He enlisted in the army in On August 21, 1968, he was leading a patrol of Company C, Fifth Infantry, Twenty-fifth Infantry Division when they were attacked by a large force of North Vietnamese. When the squad leader was killed, Young assumed command and repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire, while encouraging his men. Despite orders to pull back, he remained behind to assist several of his men who were unable to withdraw. He received a critical head injury. Refusing assistance, he still stayed to cover the withdrawal and was killed. His parents were presented the Medal of Honor at the White House on April 7, 1970, by President Richard Nixon. Marvin Young is buried in the Sunset Cemetery at Odessa, Texas.
