1 2011 GREAT MIDWEST BALLOON FEST AUGUST We have secured the Price Brothers property of 240 acres (we would actually be using 125 acres) for the site of the 2011 Great Midwest Balloon Fest. We have chosen this site instead of the Kemper Farm site because it offers more usable acreage for the festival and on-site parking. The parking for the 2010 festival was very challenging and it was decided that changes needed to be made. First, there will be no charge for parking which will help expedite the visitors into the site. Secondly, there was approximately 45 acres of parking last year with some of it across Antioch on Roger Campbell s field. The Price Brothers land was very hilly with a lot of culverts and uneven areas. The Campbell was difficult to drive in and out of. The new site will provide access from both 183 rd street and Pflumm both entrances and exits. There will be about 90 acres of parking which should provide enough of an area to accommodate all the cars particularly during the peak times of Friday and Saturday nights. The police estimated an attendance of some 20,000-30,000 people on Friday. Because of the weather on Saturday, our numbers were less than anticipated. However, there were still around 50,000 people for the entire weekend. The event was highly publicized in the local media, but we intend to also publicize outside of the metro to surrounding communities. This would help increase the economic impact with more hotel rooms, and restaurant and shopping dollars spent. Therefore, we anticipate a much larger attendance (again depending upon the weather) closer to 75, ,000. There will be more publicity, more balloons and earlier press releases about the event. The papers for both state and federal status have been filled out and are ready to be filed as per Fred Logan, the lawyer who is helping with this process. The charity model is based on Albuquerque, Plano, Texas, and other balloon festivals and is described in our non profit application. The balloon festival will serve as a vehicle for area charities to raise money for their specific causes. The Great Midwest Balloon Fest, Inc. is a non-profit 501C3 agency that is dedicated to producing a family-oriented, high quality event that offers other local non-profits an opportunity to assist in the operations of the festival. Our objective is to offer the participating non-profit agencies an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for their programs and services thus enhancing the quality of life for all of us. As you know, 2010 was our first year for the balloon festival. As the acting executive director, I, as well as my entire committee, received no financial compensation whatsoever. Only the three balloon pilots who acted as balloon coordinators received financial compensation. After researching dozens of other festivals around the country who have been in existence for years, we have been advised that the best way to go forward with this balloon festival is to have a professional staff plan and execute the event, supplemented by volunteers. Therefore, I will assume the role of paid executive director with a small staff. Regarding the compensation for this full time position, we have extensively researched this issue and have learned that a 15-20% of total revenues is appropriate for this position. Specifically the information was gathered from the Battle Creek Hot Air Balloon Festival, the National Balloon Championship in Indianola, Iowa, the Plano, Texas Balloon Festival and the Great Reno Balloon Race in Reno, Nevada.
