1 Washington DC Unit Region 2 Unit 170 Vol 19 Issue 10 October 2018 PRESIDENT S LETTER Rob Sunde Hello, again, happy campers of the WDCU. October is upon us now and we are all gearing up for the Installation rally. We are expecting a big turnout for this event for two reasons. One, it is the last official rally of our season and two, it is the time when we install our new officers. Larry and Kim have planned a great weekend for us. One of the highlights will be the field trip to their house to marvel at all of the cool stuff that they have accumulated. There was mention of the possibility of airplane rides nearby, but I haven t heard if this will happen. Looking back on this past year, I am happy to say that we had a very successful camping season. We covered a lot of territory over the summer and had some wonderful times in doing so. We have been to some exciting new campgrounds and we have enjoyed some wonderful experiences at our rallies. Our season started off with our Kick-off rally in College Park, MD. If you remember, the weather leading up to this event was pretty bad, cold and rainy. However, Wally must have been watching over us because we had, for three days, absolutely perfect weather. So perfect that Gayle was able to put the top down on her Falcon for some good cruising. In June we traveled up to Burlington, VT where the Quilt Festival was in full swing. A guided tour of Lake Champlain was also a great experience. July took us into the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia, specifically to the Luray (pronounced Looray) area. I must say that tubing on the Shenandoah River was fantastic. And with all of the period correct outfits, it felt like the Summer of Love, circa Lots of fun. August took us back to Bath, NY for a week of merriment. The highlight of the week was the super guided tours of the Curtiss Museum, the Finger Lakes Boating Museum and the Pleasant Valley/Great Western Winery. Many thanks to Jeff Ingersoll and his wife Sandy Parker for arranging this and for their gracious happy hour at their beautiful home. In September there was a joint rally with the New England unit and the Penn-Lehigh unit which toured the Little Switzerland area of PA and then continued as a rolling rally into NY and VT. I believe the Wayne and Linda went on this. Yes folks, this season has gone by in a flash and so has my term as your President. I give many thanks to all of you for your support this year. One person cannot make this club successful, it takes the participation of all its members. In my opinion, the Washington D.C. Unit has got to be the best unit of all the WBCCI clubs. It has been my privilege to serve you this past year and I leave you to the capable hands of Erica Marquette to lead us through another successful year. Respectfully submitted, Rob Sunde Page 1

3 Join Us / Renew 2018 WBCCI Membership Renewal Information It s time to pay your WBCCI and WDCU dues for 2018; $65.00 for WBCCI and $1.00 for WDCU. The best and easiest way to do this is to go to the WBCCI web site and pay with a credit card: renew-your-wbcci-membership. If you prefer, you can pay me directly at a rally; cash or checks are both fine. Or, you can mail me a check for $ Life members of WBCCI and Affiliates of WDCU can send their WDCU dues to me, or give them to me at a rally. If you want to be listed in the 2018 WBCCI Directory, dues need to be paid before November 30, If you have any changes to your Directory information, please note them on your renewal form or notify me. Please note that the WDCU PayPal account we ve used in the past has now been closed. If you have any questions, me at deborah.bede@gmail.com. See you down the road! Deborah Bede 196 Old Warner Road Bradford NH Questions, comments and Suggestions: Contact Deborah Bede Deborah.Bede@gmail.com WDCU Renewal Information How dues are calculated during the year. WBCCI membership runs for the calendar year, January 1 st through December 31 st. Renewals begin in August of the preceding year, and can continue throughout the membership year. If you want to be listed in the Membership Directory, your renewal must be in the WBCCI office by November 30 th of the preceding year. If you renew after January 1 st, at any time during the year, you will pay the full amount of $65.00 plus $1.00 for WDC Unit dues. But if you renew after July 1 st, you will also need to pay in full for the following year. So if you don t renew for 2017 until July 10, for example, you will pay $ instead of $66.00 and your dues will be paid through If you don t renew at all in 2017 you can reinstate your membership if you renew in the first half of It is easiest for everyone if you renew through the WBCCI office, whether by mail or online. If you are an Affiliate member of the WDCU or a Life member of WBCCI, you can pay your Unit dues of $1.00 per year for more than one year at a time if you pay it to the WDCU Membership person, me. So, you can give me $5.00 and it will be good for five years. Regular members of the unit can only pay one year at a time; again, it is easiest if you do this directly to WBCCI when you renew your WBCCI dues. New members dues are prorated if they join later in the year. There is a schedule on the WBCCI web site; after July 1 st new members pay the prorated amount for that year plus the full amount for the following year. Page 3

7 RALLY REPORT Rolling Rally Sept 27-Oct 4 This was a joint effort between the Penn Lehigh Unit, the New England Airstream Club and the Washington DC Unit. Wayne and I were the contacts from WDCU. The rally started in Palmerton, PA at the Little Switzerland Rally hosted by the Penn Lehigh unit rolling through NY with some New England Unit members and ending up at Barre, VT at the Digging the Dead Rally hosted by the New England Unit. WAM and I had a great time. We had some challenges for the beginning of this thing but did make it there on Friday. The PA portion of the rally was hosted by Jim Ridolfi and Marguerite Glaser who planned a wonderful time for us. We had a train ride on the Lehigh Valley Scenic Railroad and a tour at the Yuengling Brewery. We had plenty of time to tour on our own and went to The #9 Mine (my favorite of the weekend) and the Asa Packer Museum andwe did a lot of hiking in the woods with our friends and did some geo caching off the trails.. The area was abundant with fall farm stops for buying apples and pumpkins as well as gorging on warm sugary apple cider donuts. The rally had a Swiss theme and the meals went along with the theme. We had hot dogs and Swiss beans, cheese and chocolate fondue. We were there until Tuesday so potlucks rounding out the meals. The #9 Mine was fabulous! What a great look into a miners life. I didn t have high expectations when we drove into the parking area. It looked like a rundown dusty museum. When our tour was called we gathered at the back of the museum and were led outside by a very handsome tall young man with a miner s cap on and some coal dust on him. Not sure if it was from previous tours or part of the uniform. When we walked out of the museum we could see we were going to ride on a funky looking transporter to go into the mine. It was a bumpy ride into the mine but very cool. The transporter was actually going up and not down into the mine. This was because when it was built, it was lighter for the horses to bring the empty wagons up and then they could bring the full wagons down out of the mine. It was an hour tour in the mine. We walked into different areas and were told what the equipment was used for. Although the equipment was old, rusted and twisted and not used for many years, it was very interesting. This is one job I would never want to have! On Tuesday we traveled from Palmerton, PA to Gansevoort, NY (Saratoga area). The weather wasn t great but we found a lot to do. We went to the Saratoga National Historic Park which was also fabulous. I did not know there was a major revolutionary war battle there which Benedict Arnold was a major contributor. Unfortunately, by the time the memorials had been built, he had turned to the other side. There is a monument there for him but it does not say his name. It is low key! The rangers there were great for information about the park and the battle. Our little rolling travel group left Gansevoort, NY but we had to split from them to continue on to host some family at out Colebrook, NH cabin. The rest of them continued on to the New England Unit rally, Digging the Dead. From the pictures I saw, we missed out on other fun things they did. They toured a granite quarries, the artistry of gravestone and headstone design and carvings and dutch oven cooking. That is ok, we can always do it next time. Page 7
