1 Washington DC Unit Region 2 Unit 170 Vol 19 Issue 04 Apr 2018 PRESIDENT S LETTER Rob Sunde Hello happy campers of the WDCU. The camping season has arrived, finally. Hooray. It's been a long and somewhat cold winter for most of us and I am certain that we are all suffering from a bit of cabin fever. I hope that all of you who are planning to attend the CKR have made sure that your trailer is ready (tire pressure checked, including the spare; wheel bearings packed; brakes checked; water system functional; propane bottles filled; etc). Don't worry about trying to remember all the things that you need to carry with you, there is a camping store about two miles away and there are grocery and hardware stores (Home Depot) even closer. The Cherry Hill campground has an on-site bus stop where you can take a bus to a nearby Metro station. From there you can travel into DC for sight-seeing, if you so desire. I hope that you have all signed up for the rest of the rallies that are planned for this season. We have some great new events this year. Our next rally will be in Vermont during the time of the Vermont Quilt Festival, in June. Make sure to let Linda Moore know if you are coming to this. The next new rally will be in July with Ben and Michelle Ray in Luray, VA. Please be sure to notify them if you are coming to this one. I know that the Finger Lakes rally will be well attended. And finally, the Installation rally, hosted by Larry and Kim Garland, will be at the EMMR (Eastern Museum of Motor Racing) in York Springs, PA. I believe that Larry and Kim will have additional information about this event soon. Some of you know that when Gayle and I got married (4/30/08) she said that I would have to take her back to Hawaii for our 10-year anniversary. Well folks, that time has arrived and we will be heading out on 4/26, first to L.A. for two days, then on to the big island for a week. We are anxiously looking forward to this trip. The last ten years have flown by. I have finally realized that time is passing too quickly and that there is no way to go back and do things that you might have wanted to do earlier. This is one of the reasons that we choose to take an extra day at our rallies. We really enjoy seeing all of our WDCU friends and cherish the time that we can spend together. I got a message a couple of days ago, from Star Grover, that Peter had a stroke. Fortunately, for all of us, Star recognized his symptoms and was able to get immediate medical attention for him. 3 Join Us / Renew 2018 WBCCI Membership Renewal Information It s time to pay your WBCCI and WDCU dues for 2018; $65.00 for WBCCI and $1.00 for WDCU. The best and easiest way to do this is to go to the WBCCI web site and pay with a credit card: renew-your-wbcci-membership. If you prefer, you can pay me directly at a rally; cash or checks are both fine. Or, you can mail me a check for $ Life members of WBCCI and Affiliates of WDCU can send their WDCU dues to me, or give them to me at a rally. If you want to be listed in the 2018 WBCCI Directory, dues need to be paid before November 30, If you have any changes to your Directory information, please note them on your renewal form or notify me. 4 WDCU Renewal Information How dues are calculated during the year. WBCCI membership runs for the calendar year, January 1 st through December 31 st. Renewals begin in August of the preceding year, and can continue throughout the membership year. If you want to be listed in the Membership Directory, your renewal must be in the WBCCI office by November 30 th of the preceding year. If you renew after January 1 st, at any time during the year, you will pay the full amount of $65.00 plus $1.00 for WDC Unit dues. But if you renew after July 1 st, you will also need to pay in full for the following year. So if you don t renew for 2017 until July 10, for example, you will pay $ instead of $66.00 and your dues will be paid through If you don t renew at all in 2017 you can reinstate your membership if you renew in the first half of It is easiest for everyone if you renew through the WBCCI office, whether by mail or online. If you are an Affiliate member of the WDCU or a Life member of WBCCI, you can pay your Unit dues of $1.00 per year for more than one year at a time if you pay it to the WDCU Membership person, me. So, you can give me $5.00 and it will be good for five years. Regular members of the unit can only pay one year at a time; again, it is easiest if you do this directly to WBCCI when you renew your WBCCI dues. New members dues are prorated if they join later in the year. There is a schedule on the WBCCI web site; after July 1 st new members pay the prorated amount for that year plus the full amount for the following year. 6 HAPPY HOUR Time to gather! Loaded Tater Tot Skewers Ingredients Bag of Tater Tots 8 slices of bacon, chopped 1 cup of cheese, grated 1 tablespoon ranch seasoning skewers Instructions 1. Cook your tater tots according to directions until golden brown in color. Ours was in a 425 degree oven for minutes. 2. Once you pull them out of the oven, let cool for approximately 2-5 minutes until you can skewer them onto the skewers. I suggest 6-7 per skewer. 3. Once on the skewers and on the pan, sprinkle ranch dressing over each of tater tots. 4. Then sprinkle the bacon and then the cheese. 5. Into the oven for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and golden in color. 6. Remove from oven and serve. Page 6

9 Ulster County Fairgrounds, 249 Libertyville Rd., New Paltz, NY New Paltz is a unique college town with a 60 s vibe and is not too far from Bethel Woods, the site of Woodstock. And it you re interested in the other kind of rock, New Paltz is right near the Shawangunk ( Gunks) Mountains and a host of opportunities for outdoor adventures. Mornings will offer seminars on Airstream maintenance, the use Region/Unit websites and social media, cast iron cooking, a caravan leaders class and the obligatory Region 2 business meeting. Evenings will bring 2 nights of professional entertainment including a 60 s costume ball with prizes. Afternoons will be free to explore the area and this part of the Hudson Valley offers something for everyone - the Gunks for climbing, historic sites in Kingston, New Paltz and Newburgh, the Bridge Across the Hudson in Poughkeepsie and vineyards, distilleries and breweries by the score. 10 Vermont Quilt Festival Rally - June 21-24, Burlington, VT, Lone Pine Campground (802) Hosts: Linda and Wayne Moore lindamoorenh@comcast.net. BUT not just for quilt enthusiast. There are plenty of wonderful things to do in Burlington, VT. In addition to the weekend quilt festival here are many of the other sites to see while here. *VQF Vermont Quilt Festival - *Shelburne Museum - *Downtown Burlington A great farmers market and tons of restaurants. *Plenty of craft beer *Lake Champlain *Ethan Allen Homestead - *Ben & Jerry s *Tallest Filing Cabinet Who can resist this! - *Flying Monkey Sculptures Lone Pine Campground has blocked off 15 sites for this rally which will you will need to call and make your reservation and a deposit made. Of the 15 sites, 7 are still available and the deadline for the sites I asked for is April 15, Any sites not reserved after this date will be turned back to the campground. You may still reserve after but may be placed elsewhere in the campground. This is one of the nicer campground in this area so get your reservation in. This will be a very laid-back rally as there is so much to do in this area and I encourage being out an about. 11 FINGER LAKES RALLY August 4-11, 2018 HOSTS: Rob and Gayle Sunde LOCATION: Hickory Hills Camp Resort CONTACT: 7531 County Route 13 Bath, NY This will be a typical WDCU fun rally where you are on your own to explore local attractions during the day. We will have afternoon happy hours starting around 4:30 pm by the Hosts trailer. Please bring your beverage and a snack to share. Hosts will provide continental breakfast from 8:00 9:00 am starting on 8/6 through 8/10. On Thursday, 8/9, we will have a pot luck dinner at 6:00 pm in the Activity Hall (near our sites). To reserve a camp site, you must contact Hickory Hill Camp Resort directly. Ask for Gail or Rosemary and tell them you are with the WDCU airstream group. We have reserved 20 spaces. Please make your reservations early. This campground is an all-inclusive facility with multiple pools (one is adult only), playgrounds, mini golf, game room, pedal carts, later tag and geo-caching. There is also a Wellness Center & Health Spa on the premises. The campground can arrange for discount tours to many area attractions and tours. Nearby attractions include the Corning Museum, The Glen Curtiss Museum, Watkins Glen (NASCAR race there on 8/5), many vineyards and breweries plus beautiful lakes to explore. Also, a must do event is to take a dinner cruise on Lake Seneca.
