To perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in America s back country and wilderness. 2. To work to insure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use. 3. To assist the various government and private agencies in their maintenance and management of said resource. 4. To educate, encourage and solicit active participation in the wise use of the back country resource by horsemen and the general public commensurate with our heritage. 5. To foster and encourage the formation of new chapters in the state organization. Capitol Riders Chapter, BCHW (with a link to our Facebook page) Meet monthly at the Littlerock firehall, Littlerock Road SW (larger of the two meeting rooms). Please verify the meeting by either going to the chapter web site and the Events page, or call The next general meeting is scheduled for May 3rd, 7:00 pm, at the Littlerock Fire Department (West Thurston Regional Fire Authority, Station #1-2), Littlerock Road SW, Olympia, WA (when it is dark look for the bright red reader board. Just north of 110th Avenue 0.2 miles.) Immediately following the meeting we will host guide book author Kim Mc- Carrel (nwhorsetrails.com). She will give us a slide show of some of her travels for approximately a half hour (perhaps a bit more) beginning at 8 pm. Her books on her web site (four) are $25 each from what I see if you want one or more. Please invite your friends even though they might not be BCH members. Room capacity is 171 so it should be more than adequate with plenty of chairs in the closet. Peggy Tucker, Lori Ewing and Karen McDaniels had volunteeered to provide treats. Laura typically provides coffee although we ll most likely need more than one pot for this event. Any volunteers? From your President - I am back from the Arizona clinic and Deb, Cindy and I felt it was one of the best we have seen. Harry Whitney is a master and has a somewhat different take on working with horses. He doesn t believe in driving the horse as that promotes fleeing from you. He wants you to establish a desire in the horse to attend to you all the time so he is ready to respond to your cues. Of course this requires a lot of repetition and patience but we saw his techniques improve 6 horses and their riders. Each day they got better and better and horses more relaxed. I am starting this work with my 2 riding horses and finding nice improvements in their attention to me. We have lots of trail rides coming and trail work to be done this next month so check the web site and Chris s s. Kennedy Creek is coming soon so let s get out to help. Last weekend I rode at area 20 and noticed that the new parking lot at 23 had lots of trailers and that was with Nisqually riders riding on 13! Great to have more options again. Hope you all are getting out to ride. Laura Please continue to record any volunteer hours and get them to Deb Hall on a consistent basis. If you thought last spring, summer and fall were bad for wildfires, this season might be more of the same. Yes we had a good snowpack. But unseasonably warm weather like we have already seen hastens the melt. Both British Columbia and Alaska s wildfire season have begun with sizable fires. Even Montana had one in the Bob Marshall Wilderness (human caused too!) Only time will say if I am right. Last call for the BCHW saw certification class. It will be in Enumclaw on June 12th. Key Bank (in the basement) at 1212 Cole Street which is a block or so off SR 410. Starts at 8:30 am. Application should be filled out and sent in before class. (If you need the application contact Chris Enrico, or cenrico@comcast.net. It is a MS Word document although other formats can be provided.) Some of you mentioned wanting to carpool. The chapter garage sale is May 7th and officially runs from 7 am to 4 pm. We should be in the usual spot on the west side of the gravel lot at the Littlerock Saloon. Please bring what goods you have for sale. We have a 15 percent consignment fee and appreciate you picking up anything not sold by 4 pm. Also that day is another work party at Kennedy Creek. If you can t help at the garage sale perhaps you can at Kennedy Creek? 10 am at the gate. Another hour or two to sleep in! On May 8th we have a chapter ride out at Kennedy Creek. Meet at the gate at 10 am. Then we continue with the Wednesday night work parties up until the ride on the 21st. See the calendar on page 2 for more information. 1
