14 THREE AMIGOS RIDE AREA 20 By Carole Kowitt and Andrea Cotey The morning was beautiful with the sun peeking in and out of the clouds. It promised to be a grand day for a ride in the forest. Becky, Andrea and I (Carole) agreed to meet up and ride at 1:30pm on JBLM Area/TA 20. My horse, Deville, and I arrived at the AREA 20 dirt parking lot early. I wanted extra time to play with my mare and my brushes. Yes, I picked up most of the hair when I was done. One thing about riding on the base land is that there is no phone service usually. Becky left me a message that I listened to after the ride about meeting up with Andrea on Rainier Road. Anyway, the two of them arrived about 1:30 together. I was about to saddle Deville as they got out of their trucks. Becky jumped out of her truck and unloaded her beautiful, trusted mare, Mystic. Then she announced that she had to be home by 4pm. So I thought to myself, it is going to be a short ride, don't need to pack my saw or clippers. We all saddled up and head out on the trail into the woods. The trail meandered around and over, east, to a dirt road along a fence line. There is a place in the fence where there is an opening with two shoes, a pair with moss on them now, hanging from a large fir tree. We took the right turn and take the plunge off base land and onto paper company land I have been told. The trail was well traveled for the most part. The forest was beautiful. Andrea and I talked about flowers and trees. She remembered many of the plant and tree names. We enjoyed spotting new growth as we looked for a white flower. Becky was making phone calls as she rode Mystic up ahead of us. I pulled out my phone a few times to take photos. Deville was being a pain to ride, but behaving for the most part. Andrea's horse walked slowly then jogged up to the back of Becky's horse often. We changed places in our line up of three a few times, until the horses settled down with each other and had traveled long enough to tire them some. We were about an hour's ride from our trailers when Becky called for a stop to rest, and pulls out some food. I had a nut bar to chew on, but Andrea did not want to eat anything. Becky finishes her food and says she remembers the place. I just rode here two weeks ago with Lola, but don t remember how we wandered so far west. I rely on my GPS phone app called EasyTrails as a guide most of the time. Seems GPS signals are not that good when the trees are very tall, and my "blue dot" that tells me where I am was jumping around on the map. We made several turns with Becky in the lead. I thought most of the worn trails led in circles and would get us back to where we saw the two shoes hanging from the tree, however this is not true. Page 14 of 18

15 As we came upon a beautiful house that overlooks a pond and my bad memory just told me that I had seen this house before, and wasn't it a beautiful place! My head was not saying, There is no way back from this spot, turn around now! Becky told us that she looked at this house back before she bought her current home and a few details about the place. Then she says we needed to turn back so she could get home. I looked at my GPS and said; if we head northeast or make a left turn soon we should be fine. This is the spot I think of when I sing to myself "OH, we should have turned around, oh, yeah, we should have turned around". Do you know the tune? Still brings a smile to my heavy heart and makes me sigh. Not far from the "beautiful house" down the dirt road we see markers on the right side, and I encourage us to take a risk here. So we all agree, and off we go. Well, the trail turned into an old logging road, then ended. I look at my GPS and think the trucks and trailers are not so far away. Maybe we can follow deer trails? Well, that was going okay until we happened onto a very steep ridge with no easy way down. And down at the bottom of the ridge, it appeared to be very wet, gray looking, ground to top it off. Becky was concerned about being late and said we should have turned around sooner. Andrea thought so too, because she knew of no trail past that beautiful house that would take us back to the trailhead. Becky and Andrea mumbled that to each other, but figured a GPS must know something they didn t. Learning I had missed a queue from my riding buddies made me feel very guilty, wishing we had not tried to find a shortcut, and being cause in the matter, rather sad. I did not know where we were, just that we needed to get Becky back as fast as possible. Then I looked at my phone to see the battery was exceptionally low...yikes... my phone battery died as I was staring at it. Andrea spoke up and said we should follow the ridge down the sloping side and find a road. The three of us, on our trusted horses, were breaking branches and pushing stuff aside as we worked our way south, off the ridgeline and hunting for a dirt road. Becky gets on her phone to tell her husband she will be late. We slowly descend to the southwest and find an old road. I get off Deville and Andrea gets off Nikki so we can find or make a passage thru many fallen trees. It would have been fun if we weren't in such a hurry to get back to the trucks. We made a rough path, mount up and scurry through our rough passageway down to a traveled dirt road. We all feel better and anxious to get Becky back to her truck and home. Becky pulls out her phone again and looks at a map app of hers. Page 15 of 18

16 The app locator-dot kept changing locations, moving around, like it is not sure where we were exactly, our stares matched up. Without a GPS, Becky and Mystic took the lead. We cantered some, and trotted often, as we headed along a winding dirt/gravel road that took us out to the paved road that we drove in on. I see a fallen tree along the paved road, and remember passing it on the drive in and point the fallen logs out. Becky did not remember them. Andrea looks up the road as we moved along, trotting when we could. She saw two huge boulders on the side of the road and assured Becky and me that we were going in the right direction. Our horses jogged along, up a hill and I told the story of how Lola and I hunted for a trail up this hill on the right side of the paved road. How we ended up coming back to the road in the end. Up the road we traveled, around a turn, and there were the large fir trees we all recognized! Made it back to the trailers, Becky reported the time as 5:10pm. We all unsaddle our horses in a hurry when Becky said to us, "we are all leaving this ride together! Her announcement brought the three musketeers to my mind. Deville jumped into the trailer without a pause, I start my engine, and watched Andrea hustle around getting her stuff in order and jumping into her truck. Becky was waiting on us both. The three of us drove out together, Andrea and I vowing to write up this story. Notes to remember: 1.Carry water, clippers and/or a folding saw on every ride 2.Have an extra battery for each cell phone 3.Turnaround when a trail/dirt road ends 4.Be in sync with your trail buddies 5.Trust your good trail horse and always be amazed at their durability 6.Don t make social plans for after a trail ride you might be late. 7.In the backwoods, a cell phone with GPS can be helpful, but don t let it be a substitute for your own good sense 8.Speak louder or get closer to people who are hard of hearing What did you say?!! Oh, end of story. Keep it short. Page 16 of 18
