4 This property is located in Judith Basin County. Judith Basin County is nestled in the heart of the state Known as the Last, Best Place. 6 Location: Located on the east side of the Little Belt Mountains, approximately 20 miles southwest of historic Utica, Montana. Situated on what was part of the Trask Ranch, in an area known to the locals as Pig Eye Basin. Access is via the South Fork Road which is a Gravel County and Forest Service Road. The adjoining land of the formerly Trask Ranch has been developed for cabins sites. This development is called Russell Point Ranch Tracts. The South Fork Log Cabin is separate from this Development. Lewistown is a short 55 miles away to the east and Great Falls 95 miles to the northwest. Stanford, the county seat of Judith Basin County is 40 miles to the north. 7 History: The town of Utica was a hangout for cowboys and headquarters for the Judith Basin Cattle Pool in the 1880s. There was a storehouse for saddles, bridles and other gear for roundups from one season to the next. When the riders came to town, Utica was the liveliest town around. Jake Hoover discovered a sapphire mine in Yogo Gulch above Utica; that s the same Hoover who gave Charlie Russell a home and grub while the artist was fiddling around with painting. Utica is Charlie Russell country and much of the artist s work bears memories of this area and its people. Acreage: This log cabin and outbuilding are situated on 0.94 of an acre and borders the Lewis and Clark National Forest Service on its southern and eastern boundary. Burley Creek, a seasonal creek flows thru this lot. Situated also on this lot is a spring that also feeds into Burley Creek. Trail #487, travels through Russian flats and over Hoover Mountain pass and down the Lost Fork Ridge and exiting onto Highway #89, designated Scenic Byway at Kings Hill Pass. Go to for Kings Hill Scenic Byway. Checkerboard and Martinsdale, Montana are also accessed via Trail #487 and exiting onto Trail #274 that turns into Spring Creek Road. For information on hunting and fishing go to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks web site at The Judith River Wildlife Management Area is eight air miles north of this cabin at the edge of the Little Belt Mountains and is a good place to view large elk herds in late fall and winter. The Judith River is a tributary of Missouri River. Starting in the Little Belt Mountains and stretching for 127 miles in central Montana and emptying into the Missouri River not far from Judith Landing. This excellent canoeing stream flows through isolated breaks county that features white cliffs, deep coulees, and peculiar rock formations. Captain Clark of the corps of Discovery named the Judith for Julia Hancock, whom he later married in This area also offers endless recreational opportunities for ATV riding, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking just to name a few. Winter recreation includes snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing. Forest Service Snowmobile trails can be accessed right from the property. The Kings Hill Pass also offers approximately 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, plus Cross-country skiers will find approximately twenty miles of groomed cross-country ski trails for wintertime enjoyment.
