3 HIGH COUNTRY L-BAR RANCH The ranch features pristine high ponderosa pine country with golden meadows and breathtaking views of Mt. Taylor, the Alejandro Peaks (located on the property), the Jemez Mountains and the Santa Fe Mountains, with elevations ranging from 8,000 to 9,000 feet.. 4 Wildlife The High Country L-Bar Ranch provides habitat for a wide variety of wildlife species. According to recent environmental studies, 99 species of mammals and 311 species of birds have been identified in this region. Significant resident game species on the ranch are Mule Deer, Rocky Mountain Elk, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, Barbary Sheep, Mourning Dove, and Merriam Turkey. The ranch is a prime year-round elk habitat. The upper and intermediate country provide the spring, summer, and fall range. The large, dense oak stands with their high canopy provide excellent spring and summer feed. Additionally, the oak stands provide crucial calving grounds for the elk herds.

5 Vegetation and Soils The ranch has excellent natural grass and browse cover, enhanced by new and improved grasses planted by the owner. Basaltic Mesa Rim A portion of the ranch is situated on a basaltic mesa rim. Elevations on this transitional part of the ranch range from 8,000 feet to over 9,000 feet. The terrain is mostly a gentle, rolling, savannah-type with intermediate stands of Gamble Oak, Ponderosa Pine, and Piñon Pine. The Cerros de Guadalupe Mountain Range extends through the northern portion. It features steeper sloped country and heavier stands of Ponderosa Pine and Gamble Oak, as well as Aspen in some of the canyons and meadows. Grasses, browse, and forbs include Blue Gramma, Sideoats Gramma, Mountain Muhly, Arizona Fescue, June Grass, Western Wheatgrass, Galletta, Gooseberry, Gamble Oak, Gray Oak, Mountain Mahogany, and several varieties of rushes and sedges. Most of the soils are moderately deep to very deep clay; and shallow and moderately deep loamy soils. The most productive soils can be found in the Mt. Taylor Ranger District. The gently sloping terrain and consistent grass cover help to retard water runoff, which in turn provides beneficial groundwater supplies, allows for water retention and recharges the grazing areas. The upper range of the ranch represents some of the best grazing and wildlife habitat found in the southwest. The savannah-like topography with oak covered hills, pinestudded slopes, beautiful canyons, meadows, and lake beds make the High Country L-Bar Ranch one of the most scenic areas in New Mexico.

6 Location The High Country L-Bar Ranch is located in west central New Mexico, in Sandoval and McKinley Counties. The Ranch contains 19,530± deeded acres and is situated east and northeast of Mt. Taylor (elevation 11,301 ) within the Cibola National Forest and adjacent to the Marquez Wildlife Area. The east boundary of the High Country L-Bar Ranch is only 40 air miles from downtown Albuquerque. Vehicular access is convenient via Interstate 40 to Exit 114 (approximately 46 miles west of Albuquerque), then north 13 miles on Road 279, and 17 miles east to the ranch boundary. 7 Topography & Climate The High Country L-Bar Ranch ranges in elevation from 8,000' to over 9,000. Annual precipitation averages 12" to 16 in the upper country. The growing season runs from April through September. The month of June is generally the hottest, with temperatures rising over 90 degrees and cooling off at night to the mid to upper 50s. Average high rainfall months are July, August, and September. Snowfall is generally from December to mid-march. Accumulations of snow in the upper country may stay on the ground until April, providing good spring runoff and recharge of the aquifer. Cabins The ranch features a main cabin and three additional, recently installed cabins for use by hunting parties.

9 Water & Fences The High Country L-Bar Ranch is watered by 3 wells, numerous springs and earthen tanks, and intermittent creeks. Fencing consists of metal and/or wood posts; 4 strands of 12 gauge barbed wire.
