The Distributor September 2016

Director s Corner September 2016 What a great summer we have had! It always goes by way too fast. Looking back, we had fun and interesting day trips. We learned and experienced new things. We had a fantastic spring overnighter with a great Mother s Day brunch. We had a great time on Father s Day at the race track. The National in Toledo, Ohio, was one of the best Nationals I can remember, and the Illinois Region was a standout club with not one but two award winning Model A s. The 4 th of July parades were fun and successful The annual Illinois region picnic was a fun filled family event. That was followed by a parking lot swap/dinner August meeting. Then there were the cruise nights, my personal favorite! Cool summer nights, meeting friends you have known for years and meeting new friends who love the car hobby. Looking forward to fall, our club has a full calendar. September is the Civil War museum tour with a beautiful cruise up Sheridan Road. If you have never been to the Gilmore museum and are interested in antique automobiles, you shouldn t miss the opportunity. Our fall overnighter will be the Newport Hill Club this year. We are having a cemetery tour in October. Then we have the world famous, wildly popular Turkey Dinner! A new event is being planned for December, Zoo Lights at Brookfield Zoo. Then we will wrap up the year with the annual awards banquet in January. I hope you can join us for many of our club events. We have an energetic club whose members love the hobby and put the time and energy into organizing them. Let s show support for them! -Christine If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself -Henry Ford 2016 Officers and Staff Director: Christine Rozney (847) Web Master: Mark Maron (847) christinerozny@att.net Official Photographer: Mike Giamari (773) Assistant Director: Steve Sarasin (847) Property Chairman: Ken Ehrenhofer (815) Treasurer: Don Mormon (847) Raffle Coorinator: Jerry Tiesch (773) Secretary: Susan Holmes (847) Technical Coordinator: Ron Ehrenhofer(815) Editor: Michael Goode (773) Winter Swap Committee:Mark Maron (847) thedistributoreditor@gmail.com Val Maron (847) Ron Ehrenhofer(847) Regional Correspondent Melinda Pritchett (630) Larry Rust (847) Activities Chairmen: Roger Halvorsen (847) Mike Sargis (773) Vince Scalbrino (847) Refreshments: Amy and John Rozny Club Sales: Bob Friskies (847) (847) Distributor Staff: Jim Dodaro (847) Youth Coordinator Amy Rozny (847) Membership Chairman: Mike Kochevar (847) Announcements: Susan Szymanski (847) Restoration Technical Advisors Pay Car Show Chairperson: John Drenenberg (847) Judging Standards: Ron Ehrenhofer (815) New Member Coordinator: Dan Pritchett (847) Ken Ehrenhofer (847) Official Greeter Dan Pritchett (847) Era Accessories Vince Scalabrino (847) MAFFI Liaison Mark Maron (847) License Plates/Tags Frank Smith (847) Fashion Marilyn Krenger (815) Electrical Marty Brown (847)

He will be receiving a $25 gift certificate to Antique Engine Rebuilders. The photo was of the 1930 Model A driven by Australians Rod Wade and Michael Flanders 2,947 miles from Staten Island, New York to Venice Beach in California, in just 50 hours, 30 minutes, 6 seconds, setting the pace for Pre War Cars. Still powered by it s stock 40hp engine, the car ran flawlessly on this, their second attempt. They fought freezing weather and snow covered roads on their trip in November No plans to retire this car yet-it s getting ready for another record attempt next month in Australia.

Tech Talk Model A Spark Plugs-kindly submitted by Mark Maron FASHION & EVENTS Labor Day is seen by many as the end of summer-today just as it was back in the day of the Model A Ford. Elise Luto and Betty Blee, pictured at left, are seen here enjoying Labor Day weekend at Chicago s Wilson Avenue Beach in What a different experience Labor Day would be for so many people a year later! The stock market had been up and down for a good part of 1929, finally crashing on October 29, causing major changes to the lives of millions. We often see pictures of men in breadlines, looking like they d been sucker punched several times by Gene Tunney. But it seems that the women of the era are often overlooked-so let s try to see how this affected them. Men were socialized to think of themselves as breadwinners, so when they lost their jobs and resulting income, they often felt like failures because they couldn t take care of their families. They often found them- selves cut adrift from their normal routine, often unable to function emotionally. Women, on the other hand, experienced the depression differently. No housewife lost her job-her very important role of keeping the house and family together was now even more important. In addition, the number of women entering the workforce increased significantly in the 1930s in relation to that of men. They entered the workforce at nearly double the rate in the years following the depression. They also found themselves keeping their jobs at a much higher rate than men, as a large percentage were in professions that were not as affected by the economy, such as teachers and nurses. As their families could no longer always depend on the man as breadwinner, women stepped up in larger numbers taking on jobs with very poor working conditions for much lower wages to do what needed to be done to help keep the family afloat. More than half of the women in the workforce worked over 50 hours per week, for an average pay of $525 annually vs $1027 for men, despite the harsher working conditions they were often subjected to. The depression forever changed the role and importance of women in the workforce, which resulted in a change in the role and importance of women sociallyafter the depression, more women stayed single longer and made choices they were previously seen as unable to, as they were now making their own money, and their own mark on the world.

Geneva Concours Board of Directors Meeting and impromtu tech session! Don t Forget! Help support our hobby and our club by getting your Model A out to our events, as well as multi make cruise nights, car shows, and any chance you can! Photos are always welcome in The Distributor. Custom Model A Models Submitted by Carl Hagland, from an article in Hemmings Motor News by Daniel Stohl Gary Bricken of Elmdorf, Texas, has been building custom models for decades. Recently, he has been buying Model A models by Hubley and customizing them based on his passion for the many uses Henry s Lady saw from the time it was new, to after World War 2 when worn out, inexpensive models saw modifications of all types, such as the dry lakes racer, below left.

Park Ridge and Mundelein Cruise Nights A and T SWAP MEET Greasy parts, good food, tech session, fun rides much more than a simple swap meet!

ON THE COVER: The 1930 Town Sedan of Jay Lipa and Susan Szymanski My first encounter with an old car was when I was 11 years old in Lewiston, Montana. The car was at the corner gas station. I thought it was a Model A, but after talking with the attendant, I was informed that it was actually a Model T. I asked him how to start the car, but he refused, as he said I d probably drive it off the lot. After promising that I wouldn t, he showed me how. Naturally, I had to try to start it, but nothing happened as there was no engine under the hood. My curiosity with Model A s started with my interest in gangsters from the prohibition and depression era. Years later, I was at a car show on Belmont Avenue in Franklin Park. Upon leaving the show, I noticed a 1930 Town Sedan in the parkway with a For Sale sign on it. I called the next day and spoke with Mike Champion, a former member of our club. The car officially became mine on Father s Day Jay Lipa Below- The 1930 Model A Town Sedan of Jay Lipa and Susan Szymanski
