1 NEWSLETTER July Hi Club Members PRESIDENT S NOTES Hope everyone is keeping cool, or going to where it is. Not much news to give you. The next Club Monthly Meeting will be at Highland Haven Community Center on Tuesday July 12th at 7:00 PM. Hope to see a good turn out. Thanks to Bob and Shirley for a job well done as President and Vice-President. Hope Justin and I can do as well. We'll sure try. If we make mistakes let us know first. Then you can tell everyone else how dumb we are. Happy Motoring. 2 ACTIVITY REPORT By Mark Kidd WHAT HAPPENED May 14th The Car Show at St. John s Church was rained out. May 21 st Cottonwood Shores Car Show Our club had a lot of award winners: Mark & Cyndy Kidd, Ron Adwers, Clif & Keri Tyldesley, and Gerald Hudson (in his Packard). These folks were awarded 1 st in classes, and People s Choice awards. Good going folks!! Some folks went to the Blanco Car Show, but we are not aware of the awards. June 3rd Was the June Friday Night Fever, with dinner at Mama s. The weather was iffy, with scattered showers, but enough folks brought their cars to have 20 to 25 at the Burnet Town Square. June 4th Was the Masonic Car Show, but we have no information on what occurred or who attended. June 11th Was the Burnet County Fair, and we had 25 to 30 cars displayed where the Burnet Express train stops. We had good weather, we were all able to sit in the shade, the ladies had a chance to shop at the town square and at the Farmer s Market. A big group of folks ate lunch at the TrailBlazer Café on the square, and good coffee and smoothies were to be had at the Ultimate Grounds coffee house. Jerry Davis won the Founder s Choice Award with that beautiful black 50 Chevy sedan because he rebuilt it and did all the work echoing the self-reliant spirit of Texas. In addition, Justin Craig won the People s Choice Award for his fantastic 55 Chevv 2-door sedan. GOOD GOING GUYS! A couple of gearheads got to view a really BIG BLOCK (16 cylinders, 9 bore, 10 stroke 10,000+ cubic inches) in the Alco 251 diesel engine (available in short block or long block) in the locomotive that pulls the train. June 17th We visited the Gateway Assisted Living Center, beginning to gather at 10:00 AM. Matthew Cox was the sparkplug behind this event, and he insured a good turnout (13 cars and at least 23 members) with the hospitable staff serving up a great lunch. The residents had a good time viewing all our cars, and for many of the residents especially Gene, had many pleasant memories that were keyed by viewing all our cars. Many of these folks were old in years, but still very young at heart. On our way out, we had a mini parade past where the residents had a good viewing place. They got a big kick when we jazzed our engines and let our pipes sing their favorite song. Thanks, Matthew, we had a great time. We then reconvened at 4:00 PM along Main Street, between 4 th and 5 th Avenues for the 9 th Annual Soap Box Derby. Most of us managed to park in the shade on the west side of Main after Mark got the Derby staff to have the grocery getter vehicles moved elsewhere, but it was hot and almost no breeze, and your friendly editor and Judy gave out early and came home. Mark will be able to fill us in next month as to how Saturday and Sunday s events were. June 23rd We met between 10:00 and 10:30 AM at the Windchime Assisted Living Center in Kingsland for a car show for the residents. Mark promised us that lunch will be served (after all, is there any LARC member who would pass up lunch?), and the lunch was great. The burgers and beans were well worth the drive!!.. The residents enjoyed our seven cars very much, just as the Gateway residents did, we brought a lot of joy into their lives. One of the residents had a 31 Model A that he sorely missed. He was also a Buick Straight 8 expert, so he and Jim Rugg (who brought the 33 Buick), as only he and Jim know how to remove a piston from the bottom of the engine. One of the residents remarked that she was very glad we came, because it gave her a reason to get out of her room. We brought a lot of sunshine with us when we visited. 2
3 WHAT WILL HAPPEN July 1 Is Friday Night Fever at the Burnet Town Square. We will begin to congregate on the east side of the square at 5:00 PM, since that is where all the shade is. Most of us will gather at Mama s about 4:00 PM to share a good meal, enjoy each other s company, then drift on over to the square. The Ultimate Grounds Coffee Bar will have good smoothies and iced coffee, so you can have a bit of dessert, and have your jolt as a cool drink. July 2 nd Will be the Lago Vista Car Show, to be held at Bark(?) Park, from 11:30 to 2:30 at 6608 Clubhouse Court. The entrance fee is $25.00, and there will be t-shirts. July 4 th We will meet a the Kingsland at the Kingsland Security Bank on RR 2900 to be a part of Aqua Boom Festival at 11:00 AM until about 2:00 PM, then we will be meeting at the Pavilion in Marble Falls at 4:00 PM for the 4th of July festivities and fireworks show. We may do hot dawgs and chili, but we ll send out an in time to y all can get some pot luck stuff dishes fixed. In addition, the Kerrville Open Car Show will be held, with registration from 8:00 to 11:00 AM, with awards at 3:00 PM. July 29 th Will be the Fredricksburg Swap Meet. EDITOR S CORNER Dear Folks your Editor thought he d save Mark a little work and steal his notes from the June meeting and transcribe them into an activity report. Hope it worked for you, and gave Mark a little more time where he can do creative things for us. P.S. Don t tell him that I swiped them It s our little secret. The visits to the Gateway and Wind Chime Assisted Living centers were great. The feedback I heard from the residents and staff were very rewarding and encouraging. Not only that, but the lunches were great!! (Will show old Vette for food). Can we do this more often? It may be our chance to perform good deeds when the show seasons are slow. I got the impression that we would be welcome. DUES ARE DUE Reminder: It's that time of year again. Yep, time to pay your annual dues (or we ll miss you). We'll make it easy, you can select from the following options.
