Next time you are at the EAA hangar, you will notice some improvements. The first thing that may catch your eye is the construction going on at the ramp area. You have probably noticed that the ramp area gets pretty crowded, especially on Young Eagle days. The airport board has decided to increase the hard surface area around the fuel pumps and aircraft parking areas. The construction President Rex Phelps crew is out there working quite steadily and the job is coming along well. If you look at the south entrance of the EAA building, you will notice a roll up awning attached to the side of the building. This awning will serve several purposes. On rainy days, it will provide cover for the pre-meeting barbecue. Chris Cole starts the barbecue around 6:30 each meeting night and withstands all types of weather. From now on, he will at least have a roof over his head as he cooks the burgers and hot dogs for us! During Young Eagle events, the awning will provide shade for the area. When not in use, the awning is rolled up so that it doesn t try to lift the building in a wind storm. Last summer, we had some very hot meeting nights. Opening the big door allowed for some air movement, but the air was still hot. The flying insects found us to be a very inviting group and decided to join us for the evening. John McCormick, President of the Radio Control Club of Detroit, has a heating and cooling business called Even Temp. He is currently installing the air conditioning

From the President (Continued) system and will have it completed by meeting night! Speaking of meeting night.. Yes, we are meeting on Thursday, July 4th. We considered moving our meeting night because of the holiday. A poll of the membership concluded that most 4 th of July activities happen on the weekend, not Thursday night. It was decided to follow tradition and hold the July meeting on that first Thursday as usual. We hope this doesn t conflict with many members schedules. On a more personal note, Dad and I finally finished changing the fuel tanks on my Kitfox. While the wings were off, we made some other improvements t o t h e plane inc l u d i n g fresh paint t o t h e wings and the engine c o w l i n g. After nine months of down time, it feels great to be back in the air! On Sunday, Dad and I flew to Dalton for their fly-in breakfast. They sure put on a great breakfast each year. I m hoping to see lots of Chapter 13 members at future breakfasts this summer. A link to the breakfast schedule can be found on Chapter 13 website, Go to Links, then Michigan Bureau of Aeronautics and then Calendar for the Dawn Patrol schedule. See you around! Rex June Speakers Jim and Pat Stayer At the June meeting Chapter #13 was very pleased to host Jim and Pat Stayer, two renowned diving professionals who customarily dive on ship wrecks. For this presentation however, they shared a story about a Tuskegee airman named Nathaniel P. Rayburg Cliff Durand Presents Speaker s Plaque (Tuskegee Graduation Class 43-J, 10/29/43), who lost his life on December 12, 1943 when his P-39 Airacobra failed him and crashed into the St. Clair River. -2- Over time we have had the opportunity to hear a number of aviation related history lessons. Generally speaking the story takes place in distant venues in other countries. In this presentation however, we learned something about our own local history. Chapter #13 Secretary Don Miller Did What!! Many thanks to Jim and Pat for taking the time to share their story with us. Ed Just last month we featured Don Miller on the back cover of the Newsletter as a young kid who just got his ticket. Later in life he joined the service and flew any number of heavy iron jet aircraft for the military. Ultimately, he retired and settled down to flying his RV-8. That s a normal progression that anyone can understand. But then he slowed down a little more, and together with Pete Dugdale they acquired a Piper Cub. Good for him, the guy really knows how to slow down in his retirement. Or, does he? At the June Young Eagles Event, Don was seen climbing into an a e r o b a t i c Pitts with Aerobatic Flight Instructor Don Weaver courtesy of Burz Flight Training. And together, off they went. We were unable to get any pictures of Don flying up -side-down, But we were given to understand that they did a little bit of everything while they were up there. So, I have to ask, Is that any way for a 75 year old to act? I guess the answer is yes, absolutely, if you still can. Ed

Meeting Minutes for the June 13, 2013 Officers Meeting, Submitted by Secretary Cliff Durand The June board meeting highlights are as follows: Those present at the meeting: Rex Phelps, Don Miller, Dennis Glaser, Dick Green, Tom Vukonich, Laurelle White, Bob Mahieu, Rex Phelps Sr. and Cliff Durand. The Secretary report was read for the May meeting and accepted with minor corrections.. The Treasurer Report was read a s f o l l o w s : C h e c k i n g $14,344.94, Receipts $332.74, Expenses $1,174.25, membership The July program is in planning, Jim and Ben Clary are scheduled speakers for September.. Mike Fisher is still experiencing health problems please take the time to send him a card and wish him well.. We have new award plaques for our guest speakers, we should be good for 4-5 years.. The Picnic is July 13th, see Bill Appleberry if you have not signed up to bring a dish.. The board is still considering air conditioning the chapter hangar, do you know a good HVAC person? We are looking for quotes before we consider going ahead.. Our sound system is still giving us troubles, we will be working on it to improve the clarity.. There were 40 Young Eagles flown at the last event, the next event is scheduled for July 14th.. We have filled the positions for Air Academy for this season. Some campers are looking for a way to Oshkosh, if they would fit into your flight plans you could let Dennis Glaser know.. There will be a work party to hang the new awning on the south side of the Chapter hangar this Saturday, June 15, Be aware that there is work going on to improve the airport, it will be starting soon and have a -3- three week completion date.. Dave Shirey has committed to host the joint fly in of Chapter 13 and the RCCD this fall, we will see if the interest is there to make it a worthwhile event.. Those of you that own "Old Iron" please consider bringing it out to the picnic in July to show it off.. There will be no general membership meeting in August. See you at Air Venture! Respectfully submitted: Cliff Durand- EAA Chapter 13 Secretary, Ray Airport From the Flight Surgeon Gregory Pinnell, MD The following notice from Dr. Pinnell was received only a few days prior to the broadcast, too late to publish in the June Newsletter. With these new media forums presenting themselves more often, we can probably expect to see more in the future. Hopefully on time. You are cordially invited to attend a webinar I am doing on M e d X P r e s s The FAA s online medical application. The webinar is at 8pm Eastern time on Wednesday, June 12, You do not have to be an EAA member to attend. We still see a lot of misinformation (and disinformation) on MedXPress which is the only way you can apply for your FAA medical certificate. We will go over how to use the online form and the strategies to make sure you do not threaten your ability to fly light sport aircraft using your valid state drivers license. 4 Volunteering: Better than a Paycheck Submitted by Julie Rouse That was AWESOME!! I will never tire of hearing these words as kids step out of the planes that have taken them on a Young Eagles flight. I have found that the app r e h e n s i v e kids are, many times, the ones who are most excited to come back and do it again the f o l l o w i n g month. It s easy to see why: phenomenal pilots who spend their own money and time for fuel, aircraft maintenance, and grounds keeping around the airport while giving kids an experience of a lifetime. Many of the kids that fly with the Young Eagles program have never been in anything but a commercial airliner, and some have never been off the ground. I ve often wondered why pilots would participate. Giving up their time and money for kids they didn t even know. Then I discovered the answer It all started for my family back in 2008 when my oldest son, Dave, came home from school one day and said, My teacher, Mr. Phelps, said I can take a free plane ride if you sign this. What? Free plane ride? I was a little apprehensive, but Dave seemed excited about it, so I took him. I was amazed at how many kids were already there and waiting when we arrived at 9AM. Mr. Phelps took Dave flying for about 20 minutes. While they were gone, I noticed that things on the ground were a little chaotic. Seems that particular day, many of the usual ground crew were not able to be there. I walked up to the man in charge and, reading his name tag, asked, Dennis, is there something I can do? He handed me a clipboard, gave me a quick rundown of the procedures and who was flying that -4- day, and I ve been hooked ever since. Since then, all four of my children have been flying at least once during each Young Eagle season. This has become a family activity. After my son Jeff (17) came back from his first flight at 14 years old, he announced, I m going to fly planes when I grow up! Jeff graduated from Dakota High School this year, and he is still as sure about his career choice today as he was when he stepped out of that yellow Kit Fox in Our Young Eagle pilots have had a profound impact on Jeff. My son, Andy (15), loved his flights so much that he will be attending the Young Eagles Air Camp this July, courtesy of and thanks to Chapter 13. He s really excited to go and learn about all of the activities camp has to offer. Katie (11) has taken the most YE flights of them all! She has taken 7 flights and often comes along with me to help with the ground crew responsibilities. The folks out at Ray Airport are amazing! They are some of the most kind and genuine people I ve ever met. I think sometimes that they don t realize the huge impact they make on others lives. From easing apprehensive kids into taking rides, to flying well past the cutoff time because they don t want to disappoint a child, to grilling hot dogs and hamburgers for all to eat, this is an extraordinary group. So why do they do it all? They have a passion for aviation and want to ignite that passion in the next generation. They enjoy being part of something bigger. Between flights they share stories with me: The boy who wouldn t stop talking about how cool the view was, the girl who wrote in her journal during the entire flight about how the houses and cars looked like toys, and the kid who should have waited until AFTER the flight to eat the hot dog and sharing this time with such a caring group of people is way better than working for a paycheck. It s a collection of memories that is priceless. Thanks for responding to my question, How did you get started volunteering for the Young Eagles Program?, with this great story. Ed MEMBERSHIP AND DUES Chapter 13 dues are $25 per year for renewing members, this will pay to the end of the year You can make your check out to "EAA Chapter 13", and send it to our Treasurer, Don Miller, Old N. River Rd, Harrison Twp., MI 48045, , or, in the alternative, please pay at any regular Chapter meeting.

Young Eagles Report Submitted by Dennis Glaeser, YE Coordinator Here, for planning purposes, is the schedule for the rest of the year. Notices will be sent out in advance of each event: Sunday July 14 at Ray. The August event is in Croswell, MI Saturday, Aug 24, and then again at Ray, Sunday, September 8 and Saturday, October 5. Pass this along to anyone who might be interested. Incidentally, the Fly One program has gotten off to a good start at Chapter #13 this season. We have flown nearly a dozen adults who have expressed the desire to experience flying in a private aircraft. At the June Young Eagles Event we had the opportunity to fly a mother and son team, Julie and Nolan T w a r d y. Nolan is a Young Eagle who has just completed his g r o u n d s c h o o l course and earned his first flight training lesson for free under the guidelines of the YE Flight Training Program. Apparently Nolan s interest in flight is rubbing off onto Mom. Pete Dugdale and I flew Julie and Nolan at the same time, in formation so they could view each other in the air. They appeared to be more than just a little pleased. -5- Airport Apron Construction The contractor is moving onto the site at the time of this writing and construction of the apron expansion should be well underway by the time of the July Regular Meeting. REGULAR MEETINGS 1 ST Thursday of Each Month. Improvements are fairly extensive, including apron expansion and needed drainage upgrades. Plans are available for review in the airport office. The Chapter Board will be contacting the contractor to inquire about an expansion of the project to include a taxiway extension to connect the Chapter hangar to the apron. The path is immediately north of the chapter hangar. This improvement will greatly improve access, making the hangar more desirable as a rental. Ed Regular Chapter Meeting July 4, 2013 As is often the case, our July meeting will be a casual one. No formal speaker has been scheduled. A film may be offered for viewing, but other than that it will be an opportunity to talk and share what is going on with your fellow members. Just relax and enjoy. Ed Our regular meeting place is Ray Community Airport, in the Chapter #13 hangar (#304) located on the Northeast corner of the field. Meeting time is 7:30pm to 10pm. Burgers and dogs are available for a donation between 6:30 and 7:30pm.

Free Airplane Rides for Kids Sunday, July 14th, 2013 from 9am to 2pm At Ray Community Airport (see map below) Sponsored by EAA Chapter 13, Ray, MI Boys and Girls ages 8 to 17 can enjoy a FREE airplane ride with a licensed pilot.* See how the controls of an airplane work. Each Young Eagle will receive a Certificate, a Logbook, and Private Pilot Ground School Course. The flight will be entered in the World s Largest Logbook. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) launched the Young Eagles program in 1992 to give interested young people an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge. More than 1.4 million Young Eagles from more than 90 countries have been flown by 40,000 volunteer pilots. See the EAA Young Eagle website: Ray Community Airport is located in Macomb County, on Indian Trail Road, between 27 and 28 Mile Roads. Indian Trail is not paved, so the recommended route is to take North Avenue to 27 Mile Road, then heat west on 27 Mile Road to Indian Trail, then turn right to the airport. 8 Aviation History Whether you re going to AirVenture 2013 or not, here s a little history on those first years, beginning in Years of EAA: The Early Years ( ) Fledgling aviation organization finds a niche among aviators It was only a couple of years later that EAA was already receiving notoriety by appearing on the front cover of Mechanix Illustrated Magazine. Back in the day there was only one EAA member, Paul Poberezny. Here he is at work in his little office, before we were us. Soon after this Paul managed to set up an organizational meeting on January 21, 1953 at Milwaukee s Curtis Wright Field. Those first members are shown below. Here s the story January 21, A cold January night might seem fitting as the birth date of one of the world's best-known aviation organizations. After all, midwinter is the time when many aviators plan, build, and repair while dreaming of what might be in the warm, sunny days ahead. On January 26, 1953, Milwaukee resident Paul Poberezny - recently returned from service in Korea - gathered about three dozen fellow aircraft builders and restorers at Curtiss-Wright Field (now Timmerman Airport) in that city to form a local club where they could share information and talk about airplanes. Not much beyond that was expected at first, even as the new Experimental Aircraft Association created its first basic monthly newsletter and even held a fly-in the following September as part of the -8-

Aviation History (continued) Milwaukee Air Pageant. That fly-in drew 21 airplanes and all of 150 people, who easily fit in the Miller Brewing Company hangar for a Saturday night dinner that year. The new EAA quickly found kindred spirits throughout the country, however. Young men, many World War II and Korea vets who got a taste of aviation in the service, joined the pre-war airplane buffs as a way to put their enthusiasm and knowledge to use. Poberezny would later often call it "using hand and mind" to explore the world of flight. Here s a look at the Rockford Flightline in 1968 Ray Stits, of Riverside, California, got permission to form EAA Chapter 1 in late 1953, and in 1954 and 1955, Poberezny's articles in Mechanix Illustrated magazine showing how to build an airplane for $800 got nationwide attention. EAA membership soon measured in the hundreds instead of the dozens. All of that business was conducted from the Poberezny's basement for a decade as the official EAA headquarters. Paul and Audrey Poberezny, plus a cadre of volunteers, sorted mail, answered phone calls, and established policy for the young organization. EAA kept up its annual fly-ins at Milwaukee (with a one-year flirtation at Oshkosh in 1956) until in 1959, more space and amenities in Rockford, Illinois, beckoned and created an era known by longtime members as "The Rockford Years." While those who built and restored airplanes were primarily the attendees at EAA's first meeting, the group quickly became a magnet for others who enjoyed flying just about anything recreationally. The first warbirds began appearing at the EAA flyins in the early 1960s, vintage airplanes accumulated in growing numbers from the very start, and aerobatics enthusiasts increasingly brought their skills to Rockford throughout the 1960s. Most people came to EAA for knowledge, information, and fun, but the association's growth also meant a business side was taking shape. In 1962, the EAA Air Museum Foundation was created to handle a surging number of aviation donations. In 1964, EAA opened its first true outside offices in Franklin, Wisconsin, with an expanded museum coming in As 1968 concluded, EAA was an organization on solid footing within the aviation community and occasionally gained some national visibility as "those guys who built and flew their own airplanes." Less than a year later, however, the EAA board made a decision that would forever change the group and make a Wisconsin city best known for overalls the Mecca for sport aviation. More information on the EAA Organization is on line at the EAA site. Hope you enjoyed this snapshot of EAA in its early days. Clearly the organization has grown into a national force on behalf of aircraft aficionados across the globe. Just to get a look at how humble our association was in its infancy, I have copied below a portion of the very first publication of the Experimenter, later to become Sport Aviation Magazine. You ve come a long way baby! FYI: Governor Rick Snyder has proclaimed September Michigan Aviation Month. More than twenty events will highlight aviation s value to the State of Michigan, not the least of which is this year s Michigan Air Tour, September 21 to 23. Further information in the September Newsletter. -9-
