3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The year 2016 has ended and we at the Auburn Senior Center begin the New Year 2017 with some new and exciting changes. Your Board has approved a café sponsored and operated by Seniors First. The café will be operating from 11:00AM to 1:00 PM 5 days a week beginning January. For those of you who remember Seniors First operated a café at the DeWitt Center location. We hope that our members will take full advantage of the new classes and events that our Executive Director Barry Connick is proposing and working on. (See Barry s message in this newsletter of coming events.) Our Travel and Tour desk has some wonderful tours and day trips planned for your enjoyment. Lillian and Dick Kai both work very hard in planning and preparing for these tours and day trips. We would appreciate if all members would share with family and friends the information for these trips. Our Travel desk is open to all; you do not have to be a member to participate and enjoy these trips. Check out the Alaskan Cruise on May 28 th My apologies for incorrectly stating our new hire Janessa Jordan s name in my December message. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many volunteers for their dedicated time and service to the center. The Senior Center is operated by 98% volunteer service. Year. To every member and your families I wish you a very Prosperous New Joe Rodrigues 3
4 DIRECTOR S REPORT I can t believe it, I ve been your Director for a full year. I ve introduced some changes, started up a few new classes and cancelled a few. It s been a bumpy road for us all, a lot of trial and error but now that we re all settling in to this building, we can forge ahead. We re kicking off a marketing campaign that will include a new logo, slogan and even a new website. By the time you get this message, we will have already opened up a café serving food (by reservation) between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. A new photographer s club is being planned for two Wednesdays a month starting in January. If you have an interest in photography, weather skilled or unskilled, join the club to share your artistic interpretation of this art form. Photographs may be uploaded to our website for all to see. You will go on excursions as a group and then have an opportunity to discuss and show slide shows of past and present work. We re also planning a Cinema Day 1 st and 3 rd Thursday of each month starting at 1:00 pm. Also in the works is a musician s club which will probably meet on a Saturday afternoon (or evening) once or twice a month to jam. Watch for details. If you are a musician and would like to join the club, please give me a call at the center. Tax season is rapidly approaching. We will start taking appointments January 18, 2017 and the tax counselors will start February 1. Also in January, is another AARP Safe Driver s Course. The Four hour course is scheduled January 9 from 10 2:00 pm and the 8 hour course is scheduled for January 23 & 24, 4 hours each day. The cost is $25.00 per participant with a $5.00 discount if you are an AARP member. Taxes are done by AARP free of charge, however donations are always graciously accepted. Remember during the year, we have Potlucks, Spaghetti Bingo, and BBQs.all requiring that we get an accurate count for attendance. So please call in to the membership desk if you plan on attending any of these activities. Thank you for your membership and continued support; without you there can be no Senior Center. Your participation in our scheduled activities is most important to help us continue with our programs. Barry Connick 4
