2 August 24, August 26, 2018 Grebe Festival Almanor Recreation Center 451 Meadowbrook Loop Teresa Arrate, teresa@plumasaudubon.org Lake Almanor is the place to be the weekend of August 24th through 26th as we celebrate the extraordinary dancing grebes with our third annual Grebe Festival centered in Chester, CA. Western and Clark s Grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis and A. clarkii) nest on Lake Almanor which is considered an Important Bird Area by National Audubon and which has grown in its importance as a breeding site for these grebes in recent years as drought has caused loss of nesting habitat elsewhere. Late August is a great time to view the grebes as they are still nesting on the lake in colonies, racing across the water in their incredible rushing displays, and when some babies are hatching and climbing aboard their parents backs. Kayak and pontoon field trips will allow festival-goers to get an up-close (but not too close!) look at nesting grebes. A variety of other field trips around the Lake Almanor basin and Lassen National Park will be sure to satisfy! 8 September 16, 2018 RandyFossum Memorial WALA Ride Terry Parsons, LAKE ALMANOR LODGE #2626 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks In memory of Randy Fossum, longtime Elk member and cofounder of the WALA ride, The ride name has been enhanced yo TheRandy Fossum Memorial WALA Ride. The 21st annual Wheel Around Lake Almanor Hand Cycle Endurance Challenge will again take on the 34 mile trek around Lake Almanor Sunday, September 16th. The ride begins in Chester Ca. which is located at the base of Mt. Lassen in the beautiful northern California mountain range. Past WALA chairman Randy Fossum, who passed away last year and had been a ride participant for the first 16 years, spoke about the sport of hand cycling and the local event. It s important that we all understand that this is not a race to see who wins it s all about the wheelers setting personal goals and meeting the challenge of the 34 mile route. The hand cyclists of WALA face challenges every day of their lives, whether that is paraplegia, quadriplegia, spina bifida, cerebral palsy or the loss of both legs. But, on one special day of the year, they rise to meet the challenge and hand cycle or wheelchair around Lake Almanor, They do so because they have a deep commitment to helping others, he said. In addition to the Sunday morning endurance challenge, WALA offers a Saturday evening dinner and an event day breakfast and lunch for the participants. While the primary participants are hand cyclists, everyone is encouraged to ride for this cause. A separate registration form will be made available to any cycler who would like to ride and support the wheelchair athletes. The general cost to the public to join the race is $34, One dollar for each mile around Lake Almanor. Over the past 21 years WALA has provided support for dozens of individuals in need and to community agencies that provide other needed support in the lake Almanor area. Pledges made to riders and community contributions, both local and from across the nation have exceeded $80,000 over the rides history. Year round donations can be made to WALA c/o lake Almanor elks lodge, P.O.. Box 1329, Chester, Ca The annual event is traditionally hosted the second Sunday after labor day. For more information about the ride in general or to request to be a 2018 sponsor, contact terry Parsons at or Kathy Wasson 530' September 20, 2018 Thursday History Chat Marilyn Quadrio, marilynquadrio@gmail.com Visit the Chester Library and Museum on special Thursday evenings May 10 th - October 18 th for History Chats with Marilyn Quadrio.
