1 October 2011 HOGWASH DIRECTOR S ARTICLE Well, I m on my second day back from the rally and my tail is dragging. I had a blast, and it seems that everyone joined me in the fun. I want to thank everyone in our chapter for their willingness to volunteer. We have a strong chapter of some great people. You guys always step up in everything we do. We are coming down toward some of the best riding weather of the year and I see all sorts of rides showing up on the calendar. Remember, if you lead a ride you name goes in the hat for the Road Captain or Ride Leader of the month for a $25 gas card. The Official Newsletter of the Atlanta Chapter, Inc. Chapter Number 0788 October Chapter Meeting Change Saturday 22 Are you tired of the regular old Thursday night meeting? So let s have a Saturday lunchtime meeting and when it s over, we will head over to Three Dollar Café in Douglasville to enjoy some wings and college football. As you know Three Dollar Café holds Thursday night bike night in association with our dealership, so let s get out and give them some support. When: Saturday Morning, October 22 at 11:00 A.M. at the pavilion from there a scenic ride through Douglas County to Three Dollar Café at Arbor Place Mall. I m so ready to do some fall riding and events at our dealership. Remember there are some awesome overnight rides coming up, such as the Fall Leaf Ride & Signal Mountain, two of our best annual rides. We also have the 1 st annual Charlie Myers ride to the Okefenokee there s one that you just can t miss. Anyway, ride safe. Bobby Conway, Director TREASURER S ARTICLE Attendance Jackpot Congratulations to Jimmy Durham whose name was drawn for the September Attendance Jackpot. Unfortunately, Jimmy was not at the meeting to claim the $120. We will add $10 to the Jackpot for the next chapter meeting, $130. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in Good Standing, a current member of national H.O.G. and Atlanta Chapter. If the member whose name is drawn is not at the meeting, we will add $10 and try again next meeting. Please have your National H.O.G. card with you at the meeting. Hope to see everyone there. René Durham, Treasurer Bobby Conway, Director SAFETY OFFICER S ARTICLE Safety Myth or Fact I m Safer on the Street than on an Interstate The thinking here must be that slower is safer, but that s only really true after the accident begins. Controlled-access roadways are inherently safer because all the traffic is going the same way, and there are no side streets from which someone can pop into your path, no pedestrians, and, often, less roadside furniture to hit if you depart the roadway. Running down the road at 70 mph side-by-sidewall with the whirling wheels of a semi may feel hairy, but you are actually safer than at half that speed on a city street or even a country road. Jim Byrd, Safety Officer If you re riding ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it s still there. Will Rogers

3 ASSISTANT DIRECTOR S ARTICLE Why Harley-Davidson Since childhood I ve had a fascination with Harley- Davidson. At an early age I knew there was a mystique surrounding Harley s and the guys who rode them. I say guys because in the early 60 s I never saw a woman riding her own. My aunt lived close to a motorcycle shop where I would go and sit on the curb and watch the bikes come and go. I noticed that all the riders practiced a basic ritual when they got ready to ride. They would throw a leg over the bike, put their sunglasses on, tickle the carburetor and come down on the kick starter with dramatic effect. This would be repeated two or three times until the engine roared to life. Then they would rev it a couple of times before leaving the parking lot riding like they stole it. I was greatly impressed. The new 1965 Electra Glide brought with an electric start marked the end of this choreographed ritual of the kick starter. Nevertheless, there is still a mystique about Harley-Davidson motorcycles. I bought a stock, 2008 Road King Classic of the showroom floor of Harley-Davidson of Atlanta with no custom paint, stock chrome and just a few off-theshelf accessories and a modified exhaust. When I picked up my new bike at the dealership the service guy rode it around to the front of the store and parked it. Leaning over on the kick stand, it looked like a work of art with the bright white wall tires, chrome spoke wheels and nostalgic metal emblem on the tank. Not long after I came out of a restaurant to find three old men (older than I; WWII types) standing around grinning and talking about a Harley from their past. On the square in Marietta a man and wife asked if they could take some graduation photographs of their daughter sitting on my bike. One Sunday after church as I was preparing to leave, I saw a church member standing by my bike. The man told me that his 79-year-old mother had a bucket list and her list included riding on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He shook his head and said I don t know why that would be of such importance to her. I told him understood perfectly and would be glad to take her for a ride. At Fontana Village, on the recent Saddle and Paddle chapter ride, a lady approached me inside the lobby and said that she and her family which included three grand kids had been looking at all the Harleys parked in the parking lot and asked if I would let her grand kids sit on my bike for a photograph. Grand kids got their picture taken, one of the mothers had their picture taken and then the grandmother got her picture taken sitting on my bike. When she grabbed the handlebars, she said, Wow, I feel like doing something wild. We laughed and I told her I understood completely. Next time you throw your bike over on the kick stand and walk away from it, turn around and take a look no other bike has the mystique of a Harley- Davidson. Mark Redmon, Assistant Director Note: Cooler weather is coming. Proper inflation of your tires is essential during the cold winter months. The cooler temperatures can cause the air in your tires to contract and thus make your tire pressure fluctuate. Check air pressure when tires are cold. Tires are cold when a motorcycle has been ridden less than a mile at moderate speed or after it has been sitting for three or more hours. Never release air from a hot tire in order to reach the recommended cold tire pressure. No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is as formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. R. Reagan Providence Canyon Ride October 15 Not going on the Fall Leaf Ride? Then join me for a leisurely ride down to scope out one of Georgia s Natural Wonders. Often called Georgia s Little Grand Canyon, Providence Canyon was caused by poor farming practices during the 1800 s leaving massive gullies colored with the pink, orange, red and purple hues of the exposed canyon soil. We will meet at the Cracker Barrel in Bremen at 7:30 A.M. KSU at 8:00 A.M. Early birds are welcome to meet us for breakfast at 6:30 A.M. Get your knees in the breeze y all, Melissa Folds, Road Captain

4 1 st Annual Charlie Myers to the Okefenokee Swamp November As you may or may not know at the 2010 Georgia State Rally on Jekyll Island there was a planned guided ride to The Okefenokee Swamp. My good friend Charlie Myers got up that morning, got his camera ready, got the bike fueled up and was ready to see some gators. They mounted up rode more than two hours, sat down for lunch and waited for their food almost two hours. Only to find out that because of the lost time the road captain made the decision that they were not going to the swamp. Needless to say Charlie was more than disappointed. So the decision was made that Charlie had suffered that disappointment long enough. So join Charlie and me at the pavilion on Saturday, November 12 at the pavilion at 8:00 A.M. for an approximate five hour ride down to The Okefenokee swamp. I have five rooms blocked down at The Best Western in Waycross because this will be an overnight ride. They are holding a $69.99 rate plus taxes you just need to call and mention you are with Atlanta H.O.G. for that rate. As you know we always have a good time on our overnights and on this one you might even get to see a gator. When we get to the swamp park there s an approximate $20 charge for taking the boat and train tour of the swamp. We will get there at approximately 1:30 P.M. and they close at 5:30 P.M. On Sunday morning, we can get up and take a leisurely ride back through our great state on the back roads headed back home. So come out and join us. Bobby Conway, Road Captain Hummingbird Festival Ride October 16 Join me on Sunday, October 16 at 9:00 A.M. for a ride to my hometown of Hogansville for their annual Hummingbird Festival. It s one of the few times I ever know of an event happening there on a Sunday. When I grew up down there folks didn t even cut their grass on Sundays, however this is a fall festival setting so there will be food and vendors there selling quilts and other homemade trinkets. If you don t want festival food, we can always head down to Hog Heaven BBQ for some lunch also. So travel with me down memory lane and allow me to relive my childhood with you.
