1 November 2012 DIRECTOR S ARTICLE Mark s Corner This is prime riding weather for the Atlanta Chapter, and we have some great rides on the calendar courtesy of Matt Langley, our Head Road Captain, and our devoted team of Road Captains. Come ride with us before the weather turns cold. This year is fading quickly. We are knocking on the door of Thanksgiving and the Holiday season. You will want to be sure to save-the-date, Saturday, December 8 as we will hold our 27th Annual Holiday Party. This party will be somewhat different from the previous ones as this year we will host the Chuck Fuller Dance Extravaganza. This year s party may be one we will be talking about for years to come. René Durham, Treasurer SAFETY OFFICER S ARTICLE Replacing Your Helmet Replace your helmet if it was involved in a crash; it probably absorbed some impact shock. Some helmet manufacturers will inspect and, when possible, repair a damaged helmet. If you drop your helmet and think it might be damaged, take advantage of this service. Check those tires Cooler Temperatures = Lower Pressure For every 10 Fahrenheit changes in air temperature, your tire s inflation pressure will change by about 1 psi (up with higher temperatures and down with lower). Freedom lies in being bold. Robert Frost Mark Redmon, Director TREASURER S ARTICLE Attendance Jackpot Congratulations to Kathy King whose name was drawn for the October Attendance Jackpot. Kathy was not at the meeting to claim the $60. We will add $10 to the Jackpot for the next chapter meeting, $70. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in Good Standing, a current member of national Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every two to four years. If you notice any signs of damage before then, replace it sooner. Why replace your helmet every few years if it doesn t appear damaged? Its protective qualities may deteriorate with time and wear. The chin strap may fray or loosen at its attaching points; the shell could be chipped or damaged. The best reason is that helmets keep improving. Chances are that the helmet you buy in a couple of years will be better stronger, lighter, and more comfortable than the one you own now. It might even cost less! Can t remember when you bought your present helmet? Check the chin strap or permanent labeling. Since 1974, all helmets must have the month and date of production stamped on it. Mike Perdue, Road Captain Charlie Myers Appreciation Ride to Rockmart Join me for leisurely (in appreciation to Charley Myers) ride to Rockmart on some winding country back roads thru cotton fields and peanut patches, then on to dinner at the Pizza Farm. If you haven t eaten here, it s a must have! Mark Cothern, Road Captain International Motorcycle Show Been waiting to go to the International Motorcycle Show? What better time to go than with your HOG family. Come join us on Saturday, November 3 at 10am for a roundabout ride over to the Cumberland area for the show. Along the way, we will stop for lunch. Tickets for the show are $13 in advance online and $15 at the door. If the weather is cold or raining, don t let that keep you home. Bring the cage if you need to due to weather. 4 Signal Mountain IX Ride We will meet at the Pavilion at 8:00 a.m. and wait for our friends from the Great South Chapter. KSU at 8:30 a.m. Then we head west on Hwy. 278 to sweep through the second pickup point at the QT in Dallas, GA (Hwy. 278/61) about 9:00 a.m. for any additional riders. Its finally Leather Weather! We will make a brisk ride North through the Valley, across John s Mountain on our way to Lookout Mountain for lunch at Covenant College. A new route to Raccoon Mtn. and the Moonscape Dam, the S curves of Hwy. 156, Chattanooga Vistas from Signal Mtn. and enough curves off Signal to twist your spoke wheels. Finally, we spend the night on Monteagle Mountain to share stories by the bonfire, listen to live music and enjoy some home cooking. Then there is still day two! Monteagle Mountain, Suwanee College, more twisties over to Sand Mountain, follow the river onto Sweet Home AL, back up to Lookout Mountain and home to Dallas, GA late Sunday afternoon. About 600 miles and 4 PIGS. Don t miss this ride. It will provide enough memories to carry you through the winter until the Spring. Saturday evening we spend the night at the: Best Western Smokehouse Lodge Monteagle, TN ph: CENTRAL TIME ZONE The reservation is under Atlanta HOG. You must call and request Atlanta HOG to receive the rates below. Then provide your last name along with a credit card for your personal reservation. Lodge Rooms: 10 rooms each with 2 Queen Beds $ rooms each with 1 King Bed $ Cabins: 3-1 Bedroom Cabins $ these may sleep 3-4 with a sofa or bed in the family room. Cabins 424, 432 and 438 have been blocked. They are together, close to the Lodge and Smokehouse restaurant. 5 HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN S ARTICLE Quick Tips for Rider Preparedness Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank. Hold a rider s meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams on next page). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone s riding skills and the group s riding style. Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller subgroups, each with a lead and sweep rider. Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see the diagram) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering / leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed. Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don t want handlebars to get entangled. Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. If you re separated from the group, don t panic. Your group should have a preplanned procedure in place to regroup. Don t break the law, or ride beyond your skills to catch up. For mechanical or medical problems. Use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. Matt Langley, Head Road Captain
