1 Shasta Celtic Society PO Box Redding, CA NEWS Newsletter of the Shasta Celtic Society May-June 2009, Vol. 13, No. 3 MEN OF WORTH CONCERT Father s Day and the Summer Solstice just got even more special. Men of Worth, our favorite Irish and Scottish folk duo, will be performing traditional Celtic music on Father s Day Sunday, June 21, at the IOOF Hall, Silverlode Lane, Millville, just off Silverbridge Road off of Highway 44. James Keigher from Ireland and Scotsman Donnie Macdonald, singing in both Gaelic and English, are noted for their innovative yet authentic style with the mandolin, guitar, mando-cello, bodhrans and concertina. Their combined talents create a truly unique and memorable concert. This duo is well known to the North state just ask some of our members! Peggy Randolph and Jacquie Whittingham have both traveled on Men of Worth tours. This fun-filled evening will start at 5:30 PM with pre-concert Dad s root beer floats (one per ticket) and a display of vintage autos to check out. The concert will begin at 6:30 PM. Advance tickets will be available at Bernie s Guitar starting June 1 and cost $12 for SCS members and $15 for the general public. Or, you can purchase advance tickets by mail. Just mail your check by June 18 to the SCS at PO Box , Redding, CA 96099, and your tickets will be at the door waiting for you. Save time and gas! Tickets bought at the door are $17 for SCS members and $20 for the general public. Children under 12 are just $10, whether bought in advance or at the door. So bring that worthy father of yours out for a special treat and make the longest day of the year the most memorable day of the year. See you there! -Chris Alexander, Entertainment Committee Chair News from the BOARD Elections Newcomers Helen Allasia and Carol Zoeller, along with incumbents Mike Bunten and Shirley Pritchett, were elected to the 2009/2010 Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting held on Monday, April 13. Come July 1, our new Board members will replace outgoing members Laurie Burk and Eileen LaChaussee. The new Board will decide officers amongst themselves after the June monthly meeting. Welcome Helen and Carol! And thank you Laurie and Eileen for your time and dedication. Woodland Bus Trip Because we couldn t get quite enough people to make it cost effective to hire a bus to travel to the Woodland Games, the trip was cancelled. It was a good idea, and we may try it again for another outof-town event in the future! 1

2 CELTIC SANDS CONCERT Spreading the love of languages and cultures to our school and community is the motto of University Preparatory School s World Languages Club. Our fifteen-member high school club has been running for a mere three years but has already left its mark on the Redding community. Last year, students organized, funded (with the help of ENLACE, an SUHSD grant), and planned a Russian concert with the band Limpopo, only to have such success that this year an even bigger event is in the works. On Saturday, June 6, at 7 PM, University Preparatory School World Languages Club is doing it again this time with the Bay Area band known as Celtic Sands! A five-piece band complete with harp, guitar, and beautiful voices, Celtic Sands was called a dazzle of poetry and fun by the Pacifica Times Tribune and is expected to bring some fun and variety to Redding. Tickets are $10 and will be available beginning May 11 at the University Preparatory School office. (More ticket outlets will be listed in the DATE section of the Redding Record Searchlight soon!). The concert will be held at the David Marr Auditorium at 2200 Eureka Way, so bring your friends and family and help support this student-run club. All proceeds benefit U-Prep World Languages Club and will help provide the club with more opportunities to spread the love of languages and cultures to their school and community. If you have any questions, feel free to call We hope to see you there! -Christa Nemchick, President of the World Languages Club 2010 MEN OF WORTH TOURS Men of Worth have announced their tours on tap for All tours span 9 nights and cost $2500 per person double occupancy, or $2750 per person single occupancy. Cost includes dinners, B&Bs, luxury coach, activities and visits; it does not include air travel, tips or insurance. The tours are as follows: Connemara/Donegal Tour: April 8-16 Northern Scotland Tour: June West of Ireland Tour: August 3-11 Mull & Iona Tour: September 28-October 6 For full details, please contact me at minchmusic@ comcast.net, 916/ (home), or 916/ (cell). -Donnie Macdonald Burns Scottish Highlands Tour In the summer of 1787, Robert Burns set off on a tour of discovery of his country s highlands. The places he visited influenced his poems and songs. For September 7-18, 2009, Ken McFarland has created a version of Burns tour featuring internationally known Scots folk singer Jean Redpath. This modern-day tour is limited to 22 travelers who, along with Jean, will re-trace Burns historical journey. Ken is a Scottish country dancer, an English country dancer, a contra dancer, a travel agent and a trip organizer. He has introduced 25 group trips to Scotland over the last 20 years. The brochure for this September trip is at www. reeljig.com/mcfarland/ or Ken at Ken_mcfarland@ eathlink.net for more information. I haven t traveled on a McFarland tour, but his website has lots of interesting information. -Peggy Randolph women S KILT FOR SALE President Eileen LaChaussee recently received the following that may be of interest to our membership: I have a like-new all wool Scottish skirt (kilt) with 2 kilt pins. 4 review: Purely Piping IV Concert r On Saturday, April 11, the North state was treated to the full complement of the Jefferson Pipe Band (JPB), and members of the Callanish Pipe Band, who came together to fill the air with the sound of the Great Highland Bagpipes, drumming, and marching kilted men and women galore! As a prelude to the evening s Purely Piping IV concert, the band members gathered at the civic center parking lot for a tune-up, which quickly turned into a mini-set for the folks who gathered as the sound of pipes and drums filled the air. The JPB regrouped at the southern edge of the Sundial Bridge for a photo-op (well attended by the many folks enjoying the outdoors there) followed by a mini-set of tunes as spectators and groupies alike flashed their digital cameras, oohs and ahhs competing with the music. The crowd yet gathering, the band continued to impress, stopping all traffic on the Sundial Bridge as they marched and played their way over to the other side. Not only was the music over the water a special treat, but the marching of the band caused the bridge to sway and created a soft bounce, felt long before the band was in sight. At mid point, the band stopped, circled and performed a mini-set before continuing the march across to the northern side. All the while the spectators followed, oblivious to all but the power of the pipes and drums. On the far side, another set was played before the band retreated and marched back to the starting point outside the Sundial s restaurant where a pint of ale was a welcomed respite. Behind the scenes, volunteers were busy at the Veterans Memorial Hall setting the stage for the highly anticipated evening s performance. After a sound check and tending to last-minute details, all was finally ready. The concert was magnificent, and a pleasure to all who love the wail of the pipes and beat of the drum. No words can adequately describe the flow, sound, beat, volume, that makes one yearn to hear more and never go home you have to be there to experience it. Featured guest was Pipe Major John Mitchell, world renowned piper and musician who demonstrated various steps and march rhythms while a solo lament was played on a simple wood pipe. Molly Navarro gave us a vivid demonstration on the tenor drum demonstrating the required hand movements as she performed a fantastic drum solo completely in the dark with only her drumsticks alight. Master of Ceremonies Bob Elrick excelled in this position with his usual ad-lib talent and presented backgrounds on the different types of pipes as other band members demonstrated them for the audience. Rob Jeffs and Becky Saraceno performed a duet on the Scottish small pipes, demonstrating their soft, high-pitched, unique sound. The concert was, all in all, a successful evening. Thank you very much to the audience for supporting the JPB, to the volunteers for all of your valuable time and effort that you put into the program, and especially to the members of the band without you there would have been no concert. Thank you, thank you, thank you! -Yer Kelic Kat (Kitty Seiler) 4
