1 - Celtic Chronicle Bimonthly newsletter of the Celtic Council of Australia (Qld) Vol 6, No 1 Jul-Aug 2009 New CCAQ Committee Inaugural In this issue: President John Agnew Stands Down 1 President s Message 1 President s Report to AGM 2 Incoming President 2 Treasurer s Report To AGM 3 Clan News 4 The Manx Missile 4 CCAQ Noticeboard 5 CCAQ Calendar 6 President John Agnew CyC Stands Down At the recent AGM, John R. Agnew CyC stood down as President of Celtic Council of Australia (Queensland). John has been President for the last six years, since the organization was re-established. During his tenure, he has shown outstanding leadership in this Pan-Celtic role and has received the Celtic Honour of CyC for extensive contribution to the Celtic community. Our congratulations go to John on a job very well done. CCAQ will not be losing John s knowledge, experience and wisdom, however. At the AGM, members authorised the establishment of the ex-officio committee position of Immediate Past President. John R Agnew CyC therefore becomes the first occupant of that position. President s Message As incoming President of CCAQ, I would like to thank the members for giving me the honour and opportunity to serve you in that capacity. John Agnew has done a fine job of leading CCAQ over the past six years. We are pleased that he will continue to be involved in the role of Immediate Past President. I am keen to see increases in the number of members of CCAQ in particular younger members and attendances at CCAQ functions, as well as more interaction among the Celtic national groups. I would welcome your support in these endeavours. I am looking forward to a period of continuing co-operation and friendship among the members of the committee and members of the organization as a whole. Trevor Campbell D Ua

2 President s Report to AGM John R Agnew CyC Incoming President : Trevor Campbell D Ua FSA Scot Celtic friends, I hope the past year has been good to you. We are in our sixth year and we have accomplished a great deal - our numbers have grown and our activities have been well received. This is mainly due to your diligent committee. Bob Ward as our Vice President, Acting Secretary and editor of our Celtic Chronicle, has been over worked and a great assistant to me. I thank you Bob, as I do with our Treasurer Grahame Jardine-Vidgen always up front and correct with his figures. Behind Bob and Grahame, Grace Roberts, Dilwyn Griffiths, David Austin, with some newer members have done a great job. During the year I attended many occasions and functions with our Celtic friends, had fun and found as is common with almost all organizations these days that we are not gaining younger members to carry on the great work their elders are doing. We are endeavouring to have more functions where all of our Celtic cousins may join in together to enjoy our Celtic heritage. We held a very successful Pan Celtic Dinner in April last, where Celtic honours of D Ua were presented to Mr. James Johnstone and Mr. Brian Hornig. At this dinner we were entertained by the Celtic Connection choir, wonderful Scottish dancers and two fiddle players. Photographs were taken of these two recipients and of all the Celtic Honours holders who attended. The annual Glen Innes Festival was attended by many of our members, who joined in all activities, met other Celts and gained knowledge of what other Celtic associations are doing around Australia. One of our members and a member of our committee Mrs.Grace Roberts, had her Celtic Honour of D.Urr upgraded to CyC (translated as Friend of the Celts ). This I am sure made Grace very happy and proud. Congratulations Grace. I have once again had a wonderful year as your President and I hope I will see our numbers grow and also greater numbers to attend our functions in the future. Best wishes and kind regards John R. Agnew Esq. CyC KtT. Incoming CCAQ President Trevor Campbell was a member of the original CCA in Queensland and became a member of the CCAQ committee when the organization was re-established in He has been President of the Clan Campbell Society of Australia (Queensland Branch) Inc. for 20 years. He is also the Deputy National President of Clan Campbell Society of Australia and Acting National President. Together with his wife Mavis (above), he has organised and conducted the Clan Campbell Society Bannockburn Dinners for 21 years. Proceeds from this function have enabled worthwhile donations to be made to such organizations as the Leukaemia Foundation, Cancer Research, Pipe Bands, Highland Dancers, Irish Dancing and other groups. Trevor is a member of some twenty years standing of Executive Council of the Society of St. Andrew of Scotland (Queensland). He is also a Life Member and a Member and Past Chairman of the Executive Council and a Member of the Board of Governors.. He has for 27 years been President of the City of Brisbane Pipe Band, of which he is also a Life Member. He is a founding Member and Past President of the Scottish Clans Congress of Queensland, and a member of the Brisbane Clans Pipes and Drums. He is a Former Chieftain and Deputy Chieftain of the Brisbane Caledonian Society and Burns Club. and is presently joint Patron, with the Earl of Dunmore, of the Sunnybank R.S.L. Trevor is also a recipient of the Centenary Medal for distinguished service to the community, in the field of Industrial Relations. 2

4 Clan News 'Manx missile' Cavendish goes for glory in Tour de France CLAN JARDINE Following the death of the Chief Sir Alexander Maule Jardine, 12 th Baronet, in April, he has been succeeded by his son Sir William Murray Jardine. It is also reported that CCAQ Treasurer Captain Grahame Jardine-Vidgen D Ua has been appointed as the new Chief s official representative in Australia. Congratulations Grahame. CLAN CAMPBELL David Willis Campbell, former National President of the Clan Campbell Society died on 10 June He was also a former President of the Scottish Heritage Council of Australia who hosted the Duke of Argyll on his 1988 Bicentennial visit to Australia. David was proud to be his Clan Chief s Banner Bearer on that occasion. The Duke of Argyll was also hosted to a reception at the Queensland Irish Association by President Bill Hanley CyC (CCAQ Patron). Among those attending was incoming CCAQ President Trevor Campbell D Ua, who is now Acting National President of the Clan Campbell Society Isle of Man cyclist Mark Cavendish was looking to cap a momentous achievement in Paris at the end of the 2009 Tour de France. The 'Manx missile' was bidding to complete the Tour de France for the very first time and hoping for a sixth stage win in this year's event with victory on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Each time a stage finished with a bunch sprint, one rider was in control at the 96th Tour de France. Mark Cavendish insisted that each of his six victories were achieved by the whole Columbia-HTC team ; he just finished it off. In Paris, however, he and his team lead-out man, Australian Mark Renshaw, were able to celebrate first and second place after an emphatic effort from a squad committed to winning stages. This final stage provided Mark Cavendish with another chance to show that he is indeed the fastest man in the world when it comes to a sprinter. He finished a clear winner and this was demonstrated by the time it took for the rest of the riders to cross the line his nearest rival was the Australian lead-out master Mark Renshaw who helped celebrate a resounding victory, the sixth for the Columbia team all of them claimed by Cavendish. I ve always said that I wanted to win on the Champs-Elysées. Every sprinter dreams of putting their hands up in the air as they cross that line, seeing the Arc de Triomphe in the foreground and it s an amazing feeling to do so. It didn t disappoint at all. He finished a narrow 10 points behind the Norwegian Thor Hushovd, in his bid for the green jersey awarded for overall performance by a sprinter for the whole tour. 4
