3 3 MLMS Ghost Sheet I hope you all had a great summer and were able to get time to do a field trip or a wonderful vacation. Many of us had a difficult time with the heat this summer, but hope that is all behind us. The Federation show in Angels Camp was great and many of our members were rewarded for the beautiful lapidary, jewelry and faceting they entered into competition. Classes at MJC have been well attended except for a few days of extreme heat. It is time to sign up for the next session of classes. Please see Jean Hayes for information regarding sign ups. Camp Paradise will be in session from September 3 10 and September this year. Check with me if you would like to attend. Remember that our meeting in September will be at the Boy Scout Clubhouse in Enslen Park (north of Graceada Park). Best Wishes to all, Anna Christiansen. 4 MLMS Ghost Sheet 4 You are encouraged to use this lighted table to share items of interest with other members. You could display what you found on a recent field trip or maybe show material to be collected on the next field trip. If possible, show some rough and polished material. Perhaps you have just completed something that you have been working on and would like others to see it sometimes we see others working on projects in class but don t get to see the finished project. Maybe you have found a special mineral specimen, fossil, or maybe just something interesting and would like to share it with the rest of us. Sometimes you may have something that you are not sure what it is display it and ask for help identifying it. Of course anyone involved in the program for a meeting is always welcome to display things relevant to the program. If more space is needed please ask. New people are especially interested in what is being displayed. They want to see what this rock hobby is all about and learn by observation. I recall as a beginner I would always visit the club s display table. One time I saw cinnabar and said, Oh, that is what it looks like. Another time I saw chalcedony labeled and made the connection between the spelling and the pronunciation. The point is, do not be bashful use the table. We all enjoy seeing displays and it adds to the meeting. --Harold Mueller At the June 25 meeting an appeal went out to help the property directors put a new coat of paint on the exterior of Paul s Hall. Thanks to all the people listed below, we completed the work. Everyone was very cooperative and did a good job at whatever they were asked to do. Some of the tasks were: Pressure washing, scraping flaking paint, putting mastic in cracks, patching holes, replacing trim, buying paint and supplies, and applying a primer and finish coat of paint with an airless spray gun. The workdays were: Tuesday, June 27, Thursday, June 29 and Friday June 30. Since the weather was hot, we worked from 7 9 a.m. and 7:30 9 p.m. Those who helped were: Al Troglin, Jim Waterman, Neil Jacobson, Bud McMillin, Marion Roberts, Doris and Norm Buus, Dino Saiz, Anna and John Christiansen, and Harold Mueller. For those who do not know, Paul s Hall is a storage building that we lease from an almond farmer near Hughson. The lease is reasonable, but in addition we agree to maintain the building in good condition. All of the equipment that is used to put on our annual show in March is stored there, along with any other things that need to be stored. More information about Paul s Hall will appear in a later GHOST SHEET. Thanks again for a great response. Harold Mueller and John Christiansen, Property Directors

5 5 MLMS Ghost Sheet 5 gallon buckets and lids, milk crates, fossils, rocks, minerals, shells, crystals, acrylic paint and beads will be needed for the March Show. We estimate that there will be between 1,800 and 2,000 children attending, so we will need quite a bit of material. Anything you can donate will be put to good use. Monica Johnson has volunteered to be the new BAG LADY. She has directions for the little fabric bags that will be used at the Treasure Hunt and Mine Dump. Work day for the fall semester will be on Wednesday, August 30, This is also the first day of fall lapidary classes. Work will start at 10:00am or earlier if some of you wish. If earlier, let me know so we can have the room open. The classroom is in Building 6000 on the West MJC Campus on Blue Gum Ave. All class members and MLMS members who wish to lend a hand will be most welcome. Bring your lunch if you are planning on staying for class, or with to stay and work on some of the unfinished chores. We will be cleaning tables and work benches, slab and trim saws, dop pots, etc. Some equipment needs repairing, some supplies need refilling or replacing. Miscellaneous small jobs need attention. Wear your work clothes and bring along any scrubbing and scraping supplies that you might need. Bring tools that you may need to repair or adjust equipment. We hope to see many of you there. 9 9 MLMS Ghost Sheet Lockford Gem and Jewelry Show ~ September 30 & Oct 1 MLMS has been invited to join Treasures in the Cellar, the first annual Gem, Jewelry and Mineral Show in Lockford, on Sept. 30 & Oct 1. We will have a small booth with the Wheel of Fortune. If you would like to help please contact Bud or Terry McMillin at or terry.mcmillin@yahoo.com THE CFMS SHOW 2006 (California Federation of Mineralogical Societies) The 67 th annual show and convention was hosted by the Calaveras Gem and Mineral Club at the Fairgrounds near Angels Camp June 9, 10, and 11, The host club enlisted help from other groups to aid in the work involved. The Fairgrounds are situated on hilly terrain, but the hike up the hills was resolved with the courteous golf cart transport up and down as needed. The Tom Sawyer building held the 71 exhibit cases, 31 of which were in competition. The cases were educational as well as lovely to see. The Smithsonian Institute set up a case of Minerals and Gems from their vast collection in Washington, D.C. The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History was also represented with a lovely display of Minerals. Alan Schaffert set up his display of Marine Fossils and a large Fulgurite was there from the Inyo County Club. The Calif. Mining Museum exhibit on Jade not Jade was very informative. We were especially impressed with the guest speakers: Jeffery Post, Curator, from the Smithsonian; Anthony Kampf, Curator & Dept. Head, Mineral Sciences at the LA Museum; Bob Jones, Senior Editor of Rock and Gem magazine; and Robert Watters, head of the geology department of the Univ. of Nevada at Reno. A trip in to Angels Camp to the Stories in Stone rock shop was a wonderful and surprising gem. Russ Shoemaker gave an outstanding presentation entitled Earth in a Nutshell. These men were all top notch and presented a wide array of information as well as visuals. We hope to share some of these with the club throughout this next year. Congratulations to Ted Magee, John Christiansen, and Marion Roberts who won awards for their case entries, at the Saturday night banquet (even though they were listed as members of the Calaveras Club). No show would be complete without the numerous dealers selling related materials and this was no exception. A big thank you to the Calaveras Club for the hard work to help put this show together for all of us to enjoy. The 2007 show will be in the Palmdale/Lancaster area. Be on the lookout for more information in the months to come. Submitted by Romy Mueller

10 MLMS Ghost Sheet 10 Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to the many people who have so generously donated items in the last few months. These materials will be used at the March show and classroom presentations. The children just love to receive rocks, shells and fossils to take home. It is wonderful to have donations come in early so that they can be sorted and counted. This gives the committee a better idea of what needs to be purchased in January at Quartzsite. Thank you to: Doris and Norman Buus for donating the large box of soapstone. Romy and Harold Mueller for donating rocks and shells. Bruce Runner for donating a lot of dinosaur bone for the show. Joan and Dino Saiz for material to be used at the Wheel of Fortune. T.O. Johnson for gypsum crystals. Chris and Mike Whittier for fossils and helping to haul material from Minnie s and identify material. Gayla Barger for the loan of her many rock & fossil identification books. Thanks to the craftsmanship of John Christiansen we have a beautiful brand new WHEEL OF FORTUNE. Thank you, John, for completing it early so it can be used at the Lockford Gem and Jewelry Show on September 30 & October 1. EDT), the sun appears to cross the celestial equator, from north to south; this marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. On the date of either equinox, the sun is above the equator and night and day are of equal length (12 hours each); the word equinox is often used to refer to either of these dates. The word equinox is derived from the Latin word aequinoctium (equal night). (Source: infoplease.com)
