7 T-Days Celebrations On Thursday 25 February T-Days celebrated the end of the two year People s Health Trust project with a party. We enjoyed singing and planting flowers to take away as a keepsake. All the participants were positive in their feedback and delighted that we are continuing the group into the foreseeable future. The total number of sessions delivered over the two years is 292. This figure includes minibus outings that participants have attended which are outings that have taken up most of the day. This exceeds our original target. A big thank you to Gayle and Dee who have run the T-Days project so successfully over the last two years. We hope to continue running as many of our T-Days activities as possible - see p10 and p11 for details of what we re currently up to. Lifelong Learning Hello, my name is Jo Koszel. I am currently working with the IT tutors, Kathy Cooper and Joe Birch (pictured below) on a pilot scheme called Expanding Horizons. The six month scheme is funded by Leeds City Council working in partnership with ourselves and Ashfield surgery. It is for people whose health prevents them visiting the centre for IT tuition. The tutors will visit weekly and ipads are provided for the duration of the project. We hope that the project will be fun and give participants new ways of connecting with other people, particularly friends and family. It is an opportunity to explore existing interests or develop new ones and hopefully to promote and support independence too. At the end of the project I will find out how the tuition and using the ipad has benefited participants. For more information about Expanding Horizons please ask the office, admin@crossgatesgns.org.uk or call

9 Keeping Healthy Volunteering Jane Robinson recently met up with one of our members, Melvin Lamb to find out why he visits Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours Scheme CIO. I retired at 65 and have lived alone since I was in my twenties. Apart from my friends in Bradford all my social contact used to be through work. About a year ago I bumped into Moira at a local event and she suggested I come along to join T-Days short walks on a Tuesday with Gayle. I came along and it s just snowballed from there. I now enjoy the Monday walking group, Tuesday short walks, the Thursday T-Days exercise and the Cryptic Crossword class. I m also going to take part in the Lifecycle sponsored bike ride in April and I m really enjoying the training involved. I ve always enjoyed keeping fit and exercising but before I came to Cross Gates I had no-one to do it with. I thought when I first came I might be too young and I might not fit in but I was wrong. The human contact I get through coming to Cross Gates has replaced the contact I used to get at work before I retired. I know if I hadn t come along I would have gradually become more and more alone. Now the balance is just right. it all away, remaining good humoured throughout! Lunch club wouldn t be lunch club without the help of our brilliant volunteers who help in the kitchen, set the tables, serve up the food and clear Sylvia Bartlet, Lunch Club volunteer (above) said: I heard about this place through a friend at bowling and now work with her at the Lunch Club. I recommend volunteering as it is a good feeling giving something back to the community who knows when I might need it myself! John Fardell, another volunteer (below) said: I started volunteering for an outlet and a bit of involvement, I m not sure what I expected. I enjoy the hustle and bustle when I come here and think its amazing how much goes on. *Hot off the press* We were recently visited by the Food Standards Agency and are thrilled to announce we received five stars in the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme - the highest award possible. A big thank you to A big thank you to all the shoppers at Asda Killingbeck who voted for us with their green token. We received a cheque in March from the Asda Foundation for 50 Thanks Melvin! If you d like to know more about the activities we offer at Cross Gates take a look at our Activities on pages 10 and 11 or contact the office. everyone for all their hard work
