1 Is it free for me? If you re out and about with someone who relies on your help because of their disability or illness, it s worth considering the many venues and travel companies which offer free or concessionary rates for carers. All sorts of places offer concessions but they don t always advertise them. It s best to phone before your visit to check on individual admissions policies and to explain the disability or illness of the person you are accompanying. You may be asked for proof of their condition. Many places provide free wheelchair or motorised scooter loan for disabled visitors - it s usually necessary to book in advance. We have provided contact numbers for a range of venues to enable you to call about concessions, accessibility or disabled facilities. These details are provided for general guidance and do not imply recommendation by Carers Resource. Travel Disabled Person s Railcard If you are accompanying someone who has a Disabled Person s Railcard, you are both entitled to a 33% discount off most standard and first class fares in the UK. Free bus travel Although everyone of pensionable age in England can apply for a senior person s bus pass, additional travel concessions can vary throughout the country. For example, West Yorkshire residents may also be entitled to rail concessions when travelling within West Yorkshire. 2 West Yorkshire residents: Senior Pass is available to people of pensionable age, permanently resident in West Yorkshire. Entitlements include: half-fare off-peak train travel within West Yorkshire. Blind Pass entitlements: free bus travel at any time of the day in West Yorkshire and free off-peak travel throughout England free train travel at any time in West Yorkshire Disabled Pass entitlements: half-fare off-peak train travel within West Yorkshire Companion Pass anyone who is unable to travel alone may be entitled to a special pass which gives their necessary travelling companion the same concessions as themselves within West Yorkshire. 3 Leisure Cinema The UK Cinema Association provides a card which can be used to verify that the holder is entitled to one free ticket for a person accompanying them to the cinema. It is not necessary to be accompanied by the same person on each visit. The card holder must be over 8 years of age. Applicants must meet one or more of the following criteria: a. be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance or Personal Independence Payment or Armed Forces Independence Payment b. be a registered visually impaired person There is a 6.00 annual administration charge. Again, we recommend contacting the organisation to explain your situation before a visit. All theatres offer some sort of concessionary discount rates and or allow the carer in free. Leeds United: Leeds United offer specialised wheelchair spaces and seating for carers and carees. Proof of entitlement needed. National Trust, English Heritage Admissions policies admit the necessary companion of a disabled visitor free of charge. Both organisations produce access guides. It is advisable to check admissions criteria, accessibility and facilities prior to your visit.
