Send it to beckyherrin@keysso.net, or in the courier to Deputy Becky Herrin, Media Relations Division, Headquarters building on Stock Island. This publication can be viewed on line at Thank you for volunteering! Tiffany O Connell, Records Manager, would like to thank everyone who helped out with the 3rd Annual Christina s Courage 5K Race. It was a huge success in large part to all the volunteers who came out early in the morning to work the race. Explorer Post 906 held an Easter Bunny car wash in Marathon and raised $800 for the post! They want to thank everyone who supported them by having their car washed at the event. Deputy Garrett Bragg got into the spirit of Easter helping out at the Heron House Easter egg hunt. Welcome aboard, New Hires! Linita Lloyd, Communications Officer Carlos Raymat, Landscaping Specialist Cory Snyder, Airport Security Technician

Mike DiGiovanni found this graffiti recently painted on a Key West Public Works building on Government Road. Public Works assisted with painting it out. Farmer Jeanne Selander, Mo and other animals from the farm traveled all the way to Ocean Reef to visit with the Ocean Reef Academy. Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition wants to thank Deputy Dave Stark for his help as a trained and certified car seat technician. Here he is making sure this car seat is installed properly. As part of Sheriff Rick Ramsay s ongoing community service and community cleanup initiatives, Sgt. Nick Whiteman s squad and others in the Sheriff s Office who assisted removed over 60 shopping carts from the 240 Sombrero Road housing complex in Marathon this weekend. The carts were returned to the owners at various locations around the city. Weekly Rap Up - Page 2 The Sheriff s Dive team learned familiarity with the use of side scan sonar last week. They practiced in Largo Sound, Adam s Waterway and through some Key Largo residential canals.
3 Deputy Josh Gordon traveled to Jacksonville to be honored recently as part of the Safariland Saves Lives Club. His vest saved him when he was shot in the chest during an confrontation with an armed suspect on Stock Island. Deputy Gordon also had fun on Easter picking up chicks at Higg s Beach. He took this lonely little one to Wildlife Rescue. Sgt. Dawn Leird s unit said goodbye to her this week as she leaves to go to the Major Crimes Unit in Special Investigations. Central Records said goodbye to Paula Wachob who is leaving the unit and transferring to the Special Operations Unit. They all had dinner together at Benihana. Sgt. 4 Basic Law Enforcement Academy 60 helped to spruce up the Lion s Club building in Key West. Here they are giving it a face lift with a little paint. Great job! Anna Richards, at the left rear, donated $300 to MARC for the privilege of getting to shoot a Taser during the recent Citizen s Police Academy class in the Upper Keys. Members of the CPA bid for the opportunity and she was the highest bidder. Lt. David Carey meets with retired Navy Seal Craig Turner (on the right) this week during his 120 mile fund raising walk to benefit the Navy Seal Foundation. Turner walked from the Ocean Reef Club to Key West over a four day time period. A little blurry, but this is the crew who helped with the most recent Islamorada Adopt a Highway cleanup. Weekly Rap Up - Page 4
5 Marine Deputy James Hager has been very busy on the water tagging derelict vessels offshore of the Lower Keys for removal. Deputy Lazaro Valdes teams up with Waste Management to clean up trash at 5th Street and 5th Avenue on Stock Island. Records clerk Danielle Reams (above), Dep. David Lariz (below) and Sgt. Evan Calhoun cut back some bushes and returned some shopping carts on Big Pine Key this week. The Sheriff s Office has been working with the Key Deer Refuge on a continuous clean up operation on Big Pine Key since this time last year. Many areas have been cleaned up and posted as no trespassing. This effort continues - above, Key Deer Officer Berger and Deputy Josh Gordon are pictured with trash they collected, and with one of the signs being posted all over the island on Key Deer Refuge land. Deputy Jon Riggs helped to ferry a large group of Cuban refugees from Cook Island, offshore of Big Pine Key, to the Dolphin Marina on Little Torch Key this week. After receiving speeding complaints on Boca Chica Road, Deputy Vicki Lockwood and Traffic Deputy John McGee conducted a traffic enforcement detail in that area. Roll call training in the Lower keys was busy this week. Here is Deputy Aaron Roddy learning about the speed sign from Deputy Don Stulken. Squads also practiced on the Stinger spikes this week. Weekly Rap Up - Page 5
6 Sgt. Jason Madnick and Sgt. Scott Ward s road patrol squads have been working with the community of Hibiscus Park in Key Largo to help them clean up their neighborhood and improve its safety and security. Over the past week, they have cleaned up a number of derelict and abandoned vehicles. Also, with the help of community partner Monroe County Fence Company, the fence between Hibiscus Park and the Publix grocery store was repaired. Community members complained about unwanted foot traffic traveling back and forth through the area because the fence was broken. Here are some pictures from the two community improvement projects. A recent power outage at Pennecamp State Park put a large amount of food in danger of spoiling. Sgt. Jason Madnick s squad quickly acted to find a group in need to take the food. First Baptist Church in Key Largo took the donation gladly and distributed it to families in need. The Upper Keys Citizen s Police Academy learning to fingerprint during their Crime Scene Investigation class. Sgt. Scott Ward and Deputy Paul Rocha added a new Crime Watch in Distrct Seven - Keys Lake Villas. Weekly Rap Up - Page 6 Deputy Andrew Leird helping a woman escort her elderly mother across the parking lot at the Tavernier McDonalds.
