1 Region Seven Four Newsletter Screaming Beatty Road, Eagle Columbia, Rd, Elgin SC, ) (803) Message from the Sheriff Operation Full Armor was a major four-day sting operation led by Richland County Sheriff s Department involving multiple local, state and federal agencies - led to the arrest of 18 persons suspected of being child predators here in Richland County. Undercover law enforcement officers created online personas of young girls to correspond with travelers. I hope Operation Full Armor can serve as a sobering reminder to us all that predators aren t coming out of the closet or from under the bed; they re sitting behind a computer grooming victims over the internet. Take this opportunity to speak with your children about the dangers of communicating with people they don t know online. As parent we must remain vigilant to being aware of what our children are doing online and monitor who they are communicating with. If utilized appropriately technology can be a great tool, but unfortunately it s a tool that criminals have learned to exploit. The last thing we want is for our children to fall victim to these monsters. Stay safe! RCSD MISSION STATE- MENT It is our mission, as trusted public servants, to prevent crime and the fear of crime by providing excellence in law enforcement services, accountability and connections with our communities. Region 4 Command Staff Capt. Plexico Lt. Johnson August 2018 Sheriff Lott Message from the Sheriff 1 Safety Tips: Driver Safety 2 Community Action Team 3 Community Meetings 4 Region News 5 1

2 Driver Safety Tips Sheriff Leon Lott would like to remind citizens to be cautious and defense drivers. As we are in the age of technology, we realize that there are several things that could distract us while we are operating our motor vehicles. Many of our citizens have GPS Devices, mini computers, cell phones with several advanced capabilities, IPods and other musical devices that may take our eyes and attention off of driving. When operating these devices while driving we increase the chances of impairing our response time to traffic accident or road maintenance. Sheriff Leon Lot recognizes that other distractions may as well occur in the vehicle such as, unrestrained children, animals, and other passengers. Drivers are encouraged to keep distractions at a minimum while operating a motor vehicle. When you become distracted often times you are startled if the flow of traffic changes, you may miss a traffic light or other traffic signs, or you could make a sudden lane change or wrong turn. This type of behavior can place your safety, your passenger and other motorist safety in danger. Sheriff Leon Lott asks citizens to perform these basic safety tips while operating a motor vehicle: If you need to make a phone call or send someone a text message please pull to safe location off of the roadway. If you need to take a call and are unable to pull in a safe, well-lit area, we ask that you use a hands-free device. When using a GPS device, familiarize yourself with how it works and try not to make any changes to the device while traveling on the roadway. Avoid changing the music on your IPod or other music devices while traveling on the road, change the music before operating the motor vehicle or wait until you come to a complete stop. We encourage all of our citizens to be safe and responsible drivers. If you would like more driver safety information or other safety tips please visit our website at Important Numbers 911: Emergencies and crimes in progress : Non Emergency dispatch number : Sheriff s Department : Alvin S. Glen Detention Center : Region : Victim Services : Civil Process What should businesses do to avoid counterfeit money transactions? Properly train employees on how to spot, feel, and visually inspect money. Offer a black light system or pen system in which the employees can check the money. Implement a policy and procedure for employees to follow on how to report counterfeit money. Offer training to keep employees up to date on the latest counterfeiting trends : Code Enforcement For more safety tips please contact the Richland County Sheriff s Department Community Action Team at (803) or log on at www. rcsd.net and our Facebook page at OfficialRCSDPage 2

We ll keep an eye on your home. Leave a lamp and radio on a timer Don t stop daily deliveries of mail or newspapers - but don t let them build up while you are away. Do not arrange for the Post Office to hold your mail, arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them regularly. If we remain alert and aware of what is going on around us, we are less likely to be a target. Being prepared and taking a proactive approach can mean the difference between staying safe or becoming a victim. Online Reporting Department Profile
