Riding with Roy & Kathy By Roy & Kathy Richard April showers bring May flowers, but during the month, the prolonged cold spell put a stop to those beautiful early spring flower and buds. I hope Mother Nature doesn't play any more tricks, and the month of May will be more like spring. The wet and cold weather did put a damper on many of the area Chapter scheduled events. When the weather did cooperate, many Goldwingers were out on the roads. Happy Mother s Day to all of our GW o1 s. I hope you all have a great day. The First of the Month Dinner Ride wasn't any April Fools joke. Fred & Lori Manning made a great choice and led the group to Smokey Bones at the Union Centre exit. We attended E-2's annual Bake and Craft Sale. We attended the District Officers meeting in Columbus along with Dave & Jackie Heim. Tech Day was also on April 14th at Jack Elsen's garage. The weather was cold and it rained most of the day. But there were bikes ready at the garage to be serviced, and food was available. Jack & Pauline did a great job helping get bikes ready for the riding season. Kathy left for Seattle on April 18th to visit our granddaughter Lilah for two weeks. I attended the Annual Memorial Picnic at Keehner Park. This was the 4th annual picnic. Debbie Winkler memorialized Wayne Marks, and shared with everyone his dreams of a multi-chapter get together. The Chapter Directors from A-2, E-2, L and X-2 read the names of those fellow GWRRA members that have passed away. It was a beautiful day for a picnic, to socialize with friends, and to play some outdoor games. The Chapter Directors were the chefs for the day and there was plenty of delicious food for the 100+ that shared the afternoon. Many states have designated the month of May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. You can help to make motorist more aware of motorcycle by displaying a car sticker or passing out a motorcycle information pamphlet. Be sure to pick up a decal or pamphlet at the next chapter gathering. Now is a great time to attend one of the many GWRRA Ohio District Skills and Rider Education Courses scheduled during the month. Check the Ohio District web site for dates and locations and get registered as soon as possible, these courses fill up fast. The four area chapters (A-2, E-2, L and X-2) have organized a Multi-Chapter ride and picnic on Saturday May 12th at Buck Creek State Park near Springboro. Jim Beeber will be leading a ride to the picnic from Wendys in Miamitown at 8:30 am on Saturday, May 12 th. The picnic lunch will start at 12:00 noon. Each rider will be responsible for providing his or her own picnic lunch, chairs, and drinks. A multi-chapter ride will commence with the final destination Young's Dairy for ice cream. Watch the Chapter L Weekly Update for current dates, times and locations for upcoming activities. Signup sheets will be at the next Chapter gathering for the Memorial Weekend Ride to Niagara Falls, the Weekend Campout at Little Farm on the River which will be combined with the June 1st of the Month Dinner Ride, Buckeye Rally and many other rides and activities. Besides the entire southwest chapter gatherings during the month there are many events to participate in: T-2's Toy Run May 19th, E-2's Cruise on June 9 th at Quaker Stake & Lube in Milford, N-2 Yard Sale June 9th, Blessing of the Bikes at the Church of the Nazarene in Troy June 10th. Don't forget to get your registrations in the mail by June 7th for Buckeye Rally, which is on June 15th, 16th, and 17th. Several riders will be leaving on Thursday June 14th for Marietta, Ohio. Chapter L members decided to take E-2's extra rooms at the Best Western which is close to the Fairgrounds. If you need any information about rooms, camping, or directions, call us. Buckeye Rally is always a good time participating in games, socializing, light parade, shopping at your favorite vendor, and many other activities. Plan now to attend and send in your reservation as soon as possible. See you at the next Chapter L gathering or GWRRA event. Roy & Kathy Chapter Educator By Dave Heim SUGGESTIONS FOR SAFE TRAILERING Many of us will be making our first trip hauling our trailers soon. Here are a few tips on making that first trip with a trailer a little safer. Low Air Pressure: If your trailer has sat all winter resting on its wheels, there is a good chance that the tires have lost air. There may no be enough air in the tire to register on the pressure gauge so please be sure that you check that air pressure 2
before you leave, and also make a few checks along the way. Flat Spots: Also, there is a good chance that the tires have developed flat spots from sitting with no air in the tires. These flat spots will run off after a few miles. It takes heat and centrifugal force to round them out. You might want to keep this in mind next year when you put that cargo trailer away. If you can block the trailer up with the wheels off the ground, it will prevent these flat spots. This can also extend the life of your tires. While the trailer wheels are up, you could check the wheel bearings or repack them if necessary. While the tires are off look over the body bolts and suspension bolts. Also check your trailer tongue bolts and hitch shoe for wear. Tongue weight is very important when pulling a trailer. What is tongue weight? It is the weight of the tongue that the trailer puts on the ball/link of the hitch. How much should it be? All the experts say 7% to 12% of the total weight of the trailer. Well, how do I know what my trailer weights? The manufacture supplies that information with the bill of sale. You can take it to a truck scale but some will not read less than 1,000 lbs. If you don t want to do all that figuring, try putting the trailer tongue stand on a bathroom scale and distribute items so that you have 25 to 30 pounds on the scales. If the tongue weight is too light, it can push up when stopping. If your shoe on a ball coupler is not adjusted correctly and is too loose, it is possible to de-couple from the hitch. If the tongue weight is too much the trailer will add weight to your rear suspension of your motorcycle with a down force and thereby unloading weight from the front wheel, causing longer stopping distances. As we know, 70% of our stopping power is the front brake. Where you place items in the trailer is also important. The heavy seldom used items put to the bottom and over the axle and wheels. The items used more frequently put in the front of the trailer and behind the low heavy items to the rear. Some trailers have a cooler rack in front; load it so when you measure the tongue weight you get a true weight. Safety Chains: Ohio Revised Code states: Section of the Ohio Revised Code states in addition to the towbar or other connection, each trailer shall be coupled with stay chains. The chains shall be of sufficient strength and size to prevent the towed vehicle from separating from the towing vehicle in case the towbar or other 3 connection fails. Federal rule (d) 5 states two chains must be used or a bridled arrangement of one chain. This applies to interstate commercial operations that have a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more. I seriously doubt that any of you will be hauling trailers that weigh more than 10,000 pounds, so you are not required to use two chains; however, two chains are highly recommended. These chains should be strong enough to hold the weight of anyone stepping on them when connected to the bike and trailer. They should be long enough to allow the trailer to turn without binding and short enough so they do not drag on the ground. They should be crossed under the tongue in the event the trailer becomes uncoupled from the ball. The chains will catch the tongue and keep it from gouging into the pavement as well as keep it connected the bike. A simple way to shorten a chain that may be too long is to twist it a few turns. Remember most insurance companies include the trailer under the bike s liability coverage. If they become separated, the trailer may no longer be covered and the damage it does while it is coming to rest is your responsibility, not the insurance company. On a personal note, I have a friend who shared with me, just this past weekend, the fact that he was hauling a borrowed trailer, and being unfamiliar with it failed to have the ball locked in securely. It came uncoupled. Thankfully he had crossed the chains as suggested and they caught the tongue. He was able to come to a safe stop with no apparent damage. So, cross those chains! How A Trailer Affects Your Riding: When pulling a trailer, you will find your acceleration and stopping is affected. The more the trailer weighs, the more noticeable it becomes. You will have to learn just how much this affects your riding style. The old do-it-yourself models bounced a lot on bumps. The lighter the trailer, the more it will move around on the ruts from the big trucks. You will have to make wider turns and take a longer distance to pass other slower road users. Without going into the specific dynamics of a trailer, you will have to select slower speeds when negotiating curves. Most trailers do not have brakes, so if the trailer and bike get out of alignment when stopping the trailer will push the back of the bike even more. Take the time and necessary precautions with your trailer and increase your chances of having great trips.
Thanks to Judy Wyckoff on providing some valuable information on trailering. Remember Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Let s Ride! Dave Chapter Treasurer By Debbie Winkler Hi everyone, Riding season is upon us. I can t wait until I get my wheels on so I can start riding with everyone. With Karen back in town, we are planning some rides for Lady Riders (and their better half s), if they would like to go. Hopefully, we will all stay healthy so we can ride like we had planned to for the past three years. One thing that we are planning on is parking lot practice with Gibby. He is from S2 and does an excellent job with the guy s parking lot practice. (It seems like everyone looks forward to this). He has offered to help out the Lady Riders he has helped in the past putting rides together for us. Thanks Gibby! We had 69 family and friends at the last meeting. Thanks to Jim & Brenda Pennington, Bud Hensler, Carl & Cris Hauser, Dan & Georgia Horgan, Steven Albert, Bill Halm, Jack & Pauline, Gail & Randy Hiser, Lois Hollingworth, and Elmer for all their donations. Boy we sure did have a lot of door prizes. Once again, thanks to everyone for his or her generosity. Cris brought back the traveling door prize and Nancy Fread won it. There were twizzlers, chocolate, a fan, bobble head water bottle, wipes, tums, tablecloth, and knife and fork (color blue). The memorial picnic once again this year was a great success. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard in putting this together. I know Wayne would have been so proud to see everyone come together to start the riding season off. So let s continue to be safe and do a lot of riding together. Elmer and myself took our first ride (it was my first in 2 years) with Chapter E2. We had a great ride to Young s Dairy and had 42 people eating dinner together. THANKS E2! Hope to see everyone at our next meeting. Until next month ~ Be safe and don t forget to tell that someone special how you feel. Hugs and Kisses to all. Debbie & Elmer Chapter L Ride and Event Calendar By Tim & Anita Kendrick WOW Look at the ride schedule! There are fun rides and events everywhere Anita and I have actually managed to ride with the chapter some recently and we had forgotten what we were missing. We led the Spring Warm-Up Ride a couple of weeks ago. We enjoyed great weather while taking 18 riders & co-riders on a tour of local Indiana roads to have lunch at The Hearthstone in Metamora followed by dessert at Compton s Cow Palace in Shelbyville. We logged 206 miles roundtrip with none of it on the interstate. Looking ahead we have two full months of activities. There are several rallies, a couple overnighters, and some fund-raisers with other chapters, the first of two chapter campouts and several day rides. Surely everyone could find something in there to enjoy That s enough from me get out there and RIDE WITH L! 5 Pins & Patches By Tom & Barb Burns Hi Everyone! Ladies, for the summer months we have a new sleeveless blue shirt that you may be interested in purchasing. It is cotton pique with a button placket and it comes in sizes S-2X. These shirts are great to wear under the popular mesh riding jackets. So treat yourself to a Mother s Day gift and order one today. You might find us missing at May s Chapter L s meeting. Hopefully, Tom will be recovering from surgery at Bethesda North Hospital that week. We will know more after he completes undergoing tests with animal sounding names like Cat and Pet. Brenda.P@fuse.net Chapter Couple 2007 By Mike & Judy O Rourke If you didn t attend the Memorial Picnic in the heart of West Chester, you missed great food, fun games and a good time. Your next chance to EAT picnic food like only a Gold Winger can go is at the Multi Chapter Picnic at Buck Creek State Park. That picnic is scheduled for May 12, Saturday. There are so many riding activities to hone your riding skills, from Trike Courses to Skills Day. Check the calendar, there is something for everyone. See you at the Chapter L meeting where Bear and I will be honoring the ladies for Mother s
Day. (He can t wait to hug all of you lovely 01 s, which seems to be his favorite part of being his half of the Chapter Couple.) Mike (Bear) & Judy L Yes Tech Day, 2007 By Judy Wyckoff & edited by Butch Royse A good time was had by all, even though all consisted of only a few, due to cool and rainy weather. Jack Elsen & Pauline Boderone once again did a fine job of hosting the event. The trio of mechanics: Butch Royse, Carl Hauser, and Jim Webster ended up having a fairly light workday. Joe Rosemeyer brought his trailer (yes, towed by that pretty Harley) to have the wheel bearings packed. George, from A2 had brought his 2005 Red 1800 over the night before. He had new saddle bag and trunk lights to be installed. And, Tom Burns brought his bike in for an oil and filter change. As is the norm with Gold Wingers, there was plenty of food on hand. We had hot dogs and metts, grilled by yours truly, baked beans, and plenty of cookies. A pineapple upside down cake even showed up. That didn t last long. Others in attendance were: Diane & Dan Daulton, Elmer Jauch, Bud & Peg Smith, Dan Childs, Richard Elsen, Daulton s Grandson, Jay Silver, Kathy Burns, and Jim & Brenda Pennington. Judy & Butch GWRRA Members Memorial Remember the ride By Jim Pennington Memorial Day is quickly coming up this month. We always remember our military and especially the veterans who died in the numerous wars, conflicts as well as the 9/11 terrorism perpetuated by extremists against our country. Now, with the Iraq war continuing, take a moment in remembrance of those who died so that we may be free. When you stop and contemplate it, life is really short. In memory of those who had ridden with 6 Ohio Chapter L and that have passed away, we say thanks for memories. This year there are a few more empty saddles, so we have added those names to the continuing list of GWRRA members and friends who rode with Ohio Chapter "L". We hope that you were lucky enough to have ridden with some of the following: Duff Foertmeyer Glenn & Irma Hammond Jim Willman Troy & Jackie Shoemaker Al & Goldie Jacobs Larry Bell Gene Mencer John Stanton Gene Fancher Brian Staten, Former Ky. Jim Community Services/Ways & Means By Bud & Peggy Smith Hi everyone. It has been awhile since we wrote a news article. Just wanted to let people know that
we are still alive and working hard. It is nice that riding season is here and we hope to be on the bike as much as possible. We enjoyed the all Chapter Picnic this year. The food was great and yes Bud was first in line. We also wanted to thank the chapter for donating the remaining cooked and uncooked hot dogs to the One Way Farm in Fairfield. This is a safe haven place for children. We dropped the food off after the picnic there was 24 kids at the shelter and they got to have hot dogs and chips. The uncooked hot dogs were left there for future meals when the children have no place to go. The volunteers wanted us to tell everyone thank you. Gold Wingers have big hearts and it is nice to know we are doing great for those who could use some help. Bud still stops at the food bank in Hamilton twice a month with can goods so we would appreciate if you could bring in a can at the next meeting. He has also got his friends at work involved. So bread and other Hostess products are given to the Food Bank in Hamilton as well. We also would like to thank everyone who donated toothbrushes. They were greatly appreciated on the Brazil trip. I did not get to go this year but Dr. Keith Holten and Dr. John Kerbo said the children in the schools were so excited to get them. The big thing this year was giving them the color they wanted. The blue ones for some reason were the popular color. I think that might reflect on the chapter L color. Needless to say we cannot thank everyone enough. Especially Chapter T-2 for the numerous toothbrushes they gave. $5, firm.
