J une wrapped up after a few really hot days and toward the end of June it cooled off. The weather was nice for the Buckeye Rally where we had a great time. We were on gate security on Friday morning and after that duty several of us rode to Sugar Creek, OH and did some shopping then headed over to Kidron, OH to Lehman s Hardware store for more of the same right up to the time they closed and turned out the lights. With the Buckeye Rally being over we decided to head on home on Sunday morning. We had a nice ride until we rode into Butler County. That four letter word had us stop and put on different waterproof outerwear. Soon it became nearly impossible for us to see the road. We did get home safe and sound and the great detail job that Snappy did at the rally shed water pretty good, but I had to go over it and clean it up when I got home. I sold the Illusion Blue trailer to a friend of mine in Amanda, OH and my Illusion Blue Wing to Joe Schmidt recently after I picked up a new Pearl White 08. Now it is time to start a new month - July already! Hot summer fun coming up just after a cold snap on July 1 st. Brenda and I offer our congratulations to the newest International Couple of the Year, Alan & Carolyn Little from Region N in North Carolina. Alan was at our Buckeye Rally and it as good to chat with him again. Brenda and I met them when they were Chapter Couple a few years ago. We did not go to Wing Ding this year, after attending for many years, we felt that due to it being our 50 th Wedding Anniversary and our kids and grandkids wanted to be with us at that time, we had better not go this year. We do plan on going next year if our health issues continue to let us. It will be in Des Moines, IA as they say right in the center of the USA! Chapter L will be getting busy during the months of July and August. See our ride schedule and check out our weekly updates always on Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning coming from Brenda. Ride with us this summer and then you will see how much fun we have. Share the Journey

Chapter L Gathering Wednesday, July 15 Doors open at 7:00 PM. Please join us for a fun evening with motorcycling friends friends for fun, safety and knowledge is our GWRRA motto. We meet each 3rd Wednesday at 7:30 where? Green Township Senior Center 3620 Epley Lane Cincinnati, Ohio Just off I-275 at North Bend Road. Need directions call CDs Jim and Brenda. Also if you have any questions about our fun gathering our numbers are (H) or (Cell) Chapter L will not ride in the HARVEST HOME PARADE This is disappointing our GWRRA Chapter L participation in the Harvest Home Parade event has been cancelled due to lack of participation. Debbie said we needed to have lots of motorcycles and riders to take part in the parade. There was nobody who contacted Debbie or Elmer in the last 2 months that this notice had been in the newsletter. At our staff meeting Debbie said we should cancel out plans for the parade. The Robin Just for grins A motorcycle rider is riding along a country road, when a robin flies up in front of him. The rider can't do anything and hits the bird. As he looks in his rear view mirror, he sees the robin lying in the road. Being the kind of guy he is, he stops, picks up the robin and takes it home and puts it in a cage, still in a coma. When the robin wakes up the following morning, he looks through the bars of the cage and says, "what did I do to be in jail - I must have killed the guy on the motorcycle!" You bought it! A twelve year old boy was walking down the street when a big man on a black motorcycle pulls up beside him and asks, "Hey kid, wanna go for a ride?" "No!", said the boy, and he kept walking. The motorcyclist pulls up to him again and says "Hey kid, I'll give you $10 if you hop on the back." "No!", said the boy and he proceeded down the street a little quicker. The motorcyclist pulls up to the boy again and says, "Ok kid, I'll give you $20 and a BIG bag of candy if you hop on the back for a ride." At this point, the boy turns around to him and screams angrily, "Look Dad, YOU bought the Harley, so YOU ride it!" 3 3

Motorist Awareness Coordinator By Cris Hauser Motorist Awareness What is it?? Our Motto is Share the Road! Our Mission is To Facilitate a Reduction in Motorcycle Crashes with Other Motor Vehicles. MA Motorist Awareness is a program designed to reach the general public and educate them in an effort to reduce motorcycle accidents involving other motor vehicles. In June 2003, Mike Wright, President of GWRRA, announced the creation of Motorist Awareness Division. Here is an excerpt of what he said when announcing the new MA Division within GWRRA. Few of us could have foreseen the increased hazards imposed on motorcyclists in the past five years. Competition for road space is often fierce, especially during rush hours or on busy interstates and streets. Vehicle operators are more distracted than any of us could have imagined with cellular telephones, concentration on talk radio shows, and stereo systems so loud, outside noise is completely shut out of the inner sanctum within their vehicle. In our judgment, we have crossed into a new era that will need the cooperation of all highway users to cope with our modern-day traffic congestion. It is time to expand our focus beyond just our own Member/Riders and Co-Riders. It is time to take an active role in helping to educate other highway users that motorcycles and trikes share the road with them every day. Treasurer Report By Debbie Winkler Membership Enhancement By Roy & Kathy Richard W e continue to greet and meet new guests at our regular monthly gathering. There were 40 members, friends and family in attendance. This month Jim Brown, a Charter Member of L was introduced. Jim had attended Ohio A -2 when it started in 1987 and continued until A-2 closed. Although Jim has been a GWRRA member for many years, he informed newer members about his GWRRA history. He received a Chapter L T-shirt from Carol Pott and a big Gold Wing hug. Kathy Martin was the lucky winner of the membership card drawing and received a $10 gas card. Chapter E-2 members were wished "Good Luck" with their competition for "Chapter of the Year" at "Wing Ding". It's quite an honor for them and everyone is proud to have them represent Southwest Ohio. Reminder: Check your membership cards for expiration dates and be sure to get your renewals in. We wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jim and Brenda Pennington on the occasion of their "Golden" Wedding Anniversary on July 3rd. Their love has touched so many people and will continue to bring Joy in so many lives. Enjoy summer and go riding. Roy & Kathy Hi Everyone The June meeting was started off with a video from Buckeye Rally. Thanks to Judy Royse for putting this together. (She got a new toy and was trying it out). Great job Judy! Since Flag Day had just passed, Jim gave us the meaning of The Pledge Of Allegiance. Judy Royse won our quarter game, which she donated it back to the Chapter. Kathy Martin (Ch E-2) won the membership draw and walked away with a $10.00 gas card. Congratulations Kathy! Thanks to Kathy Martin, Brenda & Jim, Ed Ely, Pauline & Jack, Kathy & Roy, Diane Daulton, Carol & Bill Pott and Debbie & Elmer for all the door prizes. Our winners were Diane Daulton, Cris Hauser, Elmer, Jim Pennington, Ed Ely, Joann Marston, Kathy Richard, Jim Behanan, Jack Elsen and Joann Herrick. Congratulations to all!! Jim & Brenda gave gifts to all the fathers for Father s Day. Thanks Jim & Brenda for remembering them. Please keep all our sick ones in your prayers. Hugs and Kisses to all! Debbie & Mr. B 4 4

Ride Educator By Carl Hauser I know I am preaching to the choir, but I also know that some of us don t wear our helmets all of the time. Helmets Work Most activities have their own suitable protective gear and equipment. Motorcycling is no exception. Every rider and passenger should wear over-the-ankle footwear, long pants, a long-sleeved jacket, full-fingered motorcycle gloves, and a helmet manufactured to meet DOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) standards. Helmets work. Helmet effectiveness has been confirmed by respon sible studies, while helmet myths helmets break necks, block vision and impair hearing have been consistently disproved. Safety-conscious riders wear helmets by deliberate choice every time they ride; we know that you will, too. What a Helmet Does for You First, it is the best protective gear you can wear while riding a motor cycle. Think of it at the same time you think of your ignition key: Pick up the key; pick up the helmet. They go together. Helmet use is not a cureall for motorcycle safety, but in a crash, a helmet can help protect your brain, your face, and your life. Combined with other protective gear, rider-education courses, proper licensing and public awareness, the use of helmets and protective gear is one way to reduce injury. You hope you never have to use your helmet, just like you hope you won't ever need to use the seatbelt in your car. But crashes do happen. We can't predict when or what kind they will be. You should not say to yourself, I'm just running down to the store, and not wear your helmet. In any given year, a lot of people make good use of seatbelts, and a lot of riders give thanks that they were wearing helmets. Second, a good helmet makes riding a motorcycle more fun, due to the comfort factor: another truth. It cuts down on wind noise roaring by your ears; on windblast on your face and eyes, and deflects bugs and other objects flying through the air. It even contributes to comfort from changing weather conditions and reduces rider fatigue. Third, wearing a helmet shows that motorcyclists are responsible people; we take ourselves and motorcycling seriously. Wearing a helmet, no matter what the law says, is a projection of your attitude toward riding. And that attitude is plain to see by other riders and non-riders alike. For more information on helmets see me at our gathering. Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don t see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they ve never been on a motorcycle and can t properly judge your speed Ride safe! Carl 5 5

FUN COORDINATORS also aacd s By Phil & Lois Hollingsworth It's hard to believe that it is July already. Hopefully we'll have many good days to ride and visit other chapters and go in search of restaurants and ice cream stands. Thanks to all of those who brought in their unique and/or ugly ties. Bill Pott s old white tie won the most votes for ugliest tie and Jim Pennington's tie with the mooning Santa was voted most unique. The voting was close in both categories. This month I have an Independence Day Word Search on page 10. Let's all remember how lucky we are to live in a free country A couple of interesting videos here! Sunshine and Phone Tree By Pauline Boderone July Anniversaries Bud & Nancy Hensler 3 Jim & Brenda Pennington 3 Bill & Sandy Halm 7 Clarence & Joan Barber 8 July Birthdays Betty Royse 4 Richard Elsen 11 Angie Beeber 14 Janet Bohanan 16 Jim Jauch 18 Jerry Leptak 20 Robert Duerler 21 Carol Pott 23 Joan Barber 23 Shirley Hauck 24 Bige Napier 26 Cindy Jauch 28 Peggy Smith 28 Yvonne Tieke 31 Tom Salamon 31 Health Concerns of our members Some very good news this month; Peggy Smith had her second cataract surgery and everything went well! Watch out when you are driving, Peggy is back on the road! She still needs our love and prayers. When you see her ask how the air conditioning is working in her car? Elmer Jauch is still feeling yucky, icky, not up to par. Send him a funny card and remind him how young he is! He still needs prayers and Debbie needs them also! Fred Manning is back among the active Chapter L members and looks great! Fred we are very happy that you are doing so well. Jim Pennington is going to be celebrating 50 years of marriage on the third of July. Yes he will be with his best lady, Brenda and his family. If you know Mr. Pennington you know he is a quiet person and probably would not tell you if he had a hangnail. Jim has a heart of gold that needs prayers. He will never tell you he feels lousy so why not tell him how great he looks and we are all praying for him!!! Bob Childers is recuperating at Home. He has had a stent put in his brain to drain fluid. Bob and Tril are taking things one day at a time and praying that this last procedure will do the job and give Bob back a healthy life. Continue your prayers for Bob and Tril, send him a card and give Tril a call. Jack Elsen had a heart cath on July 2nd. We pray that whatever they found will give Jack some energy and help him feel better. Keep him in your prayers! God Bless each of you and may SUNSHINE always be part of your day! Pauline 6 6

Community Service By Denise French We will be participating with Chapter E-2 s Shriners Hospital for Children Cincinnati Toy Run on Saturday, August 1 st. We will leave Wendy s in Miamitown at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday August 1 st and ride as a group to Shriners Hospital where we will meet Chapter E-2. For those interested after the toy drop off, there will be a video and tour of the facility. Also, there will be reserved parking for our bikes on the roof top of the hospital parking garage. Go to for the patient gift guide or bring a new toy of your choice. Please help support this very worthwhile cause. Denise Never made a mistake! A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by. He gets into the taxi, and the cabbie says, 'Perfect timing. You're just like Frank.' Passenger: 'Who?' Cabbie: 'Frank Feldman. He's a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happened like that to Frank Feldman every single time.' Passenger: 'There are always a few clouds over everybody.' Cabbie: 'Not Frank Feldman. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand-Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.' Passenger: 'Sounds like he was something really special. Cabbie: 'There's more... He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody's birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Frank Feldman, he could do everything right' Passenger: 'Wow, some guy then.' 7 CHAPTER SUPPLY by Bill & Carol Pott Summer riding weather is here and we have the answer to both hot and cooler weather. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew and cinnamon into 1 c of the flour-shortening mixture and how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never set aside. To remaining flour mixture slowly mix in water until dough just holds together. Roll dough into rectangle answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing large enough to line a 9x13 pan, coming up 3/4 inch up the was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too - he was the sides. 8 Words from Gail & Randy Do you, or someone you know, have flags which have been inspected and judged unserviceable? Have they reached their present state in a proper service of tribute, memory, and love? Do you have faded Flags? As we celebrate our nation s liberty and freedom and fly our Flags high with pride, take a good look at them. Remember as you look at the Flag, it is the symbol of our nation, it is red because of human sacrifice; blue because of the true blue loyalty of its defenders; and white symbolizes liberty - our land of the free. The stars are symbols of the united efforts and hope in the hearts of the many people striving to keep America great. The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Chapter 8.K, originally adopted in 1923 states that the flag, when it is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Let these faded Flags of our Country be retired and destroyed with respectful and honorable rites and their places taken by bright new Flags. You can give your old Flags to Randy and Gail Hiser for the next Flag burning ceremony any time. The ceremony is very solemn and is done with the utmost respect and reverence for the Flags that will be retired. Rallies and Rooms by Denise French Time for more rallies! by Gail & Randy Hiser I know a few members from Chapter L are going to the Michigan District Rally and they will have a great time. Those who are attending Region D Rally will also have a great time. I just got back from a day trip to Celina, OH to check out accommodations, restaurants and other points of interest. It's a nice town, biker friendly, and easy to find your way around town (even for me). The local folk were very friendly and St. Mary's Lake was beautiful. Those that plan on attending Region D rally will be happy to know that there are 3 ice cream shops in town and a winery close by. I have reserved 6 rooms at the Americas Best Value Inn for a rate of $79.00 a night. The Inn is located at 1421 State Route 703 in Celina. If you plan on attending the rally and need a room, call me ( cell), for a confirmation number. The rooms that are not taken, I will have to cancel them on September 12th. 9 Chapter L By Jim & Brenda Pennington This was in last month s newsletter but it needs to be brought to everyone s attention again. We will be having a Happy 24 th Birthday for Chapter L coming up on our August 19 Meeting. We will have a TAILGATE PARTY on the parking lot at Green Township Senior Center (our regular meeting place) before the meeting begins 6:30 7:30. Tim & Anita Kendrick are the Chairs of this celebration party and more details will be available in the August newsletter. Stay tuned! L yes! we ll have fun always do! Just come and enjoy the fun. Hot dogs, chips and soda for 24 cents. Monies returned to a lucky member during the meeting. VOLUNTEERS We thank YOU! Chapter L is operated completely by volunteers who give many hours and of their own monies to help operate the Chapter successfully and each of us love to do it! We have a wonderful Staff at L, but now we need to RECRUIT and RETAIN members. If a member hasn t been at a Chapter L meeting for a few months they need a call from YOU. Do not let them become a Phantom Member otherwise known as a Hitchhiker. The definition of a Phantom Member or a Hitchhiker is one who wants the benefits of association without the commitment of joining GWRRA. Every member is important to the life of the Chapter. Carry a GWRRA membership application with you and sign 1 up for Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Recent L Rides Sunday s Sundae Ride by Debbie Winkler Hi Everyone, I would like to start out by saying THANKS to everyone for all their phone calls, s and concerns on Elmer. He is starting to do better still having a little problem, but all in all he is feeling better. I finally got to lead my first ride -- it was an ice cream ride. Thanks to the following for helping me in making it a success. Aaron Winkler & Tom Back, Jim & Brenda Pennington, Butch & Judy Royse, Phil & Lois Hollingsworth, Randy & Gail Hiser, Elmer heading up the back followed by Jack Elsen and Pauline Boderone in the truck. We didn t go far because of Elmer, but we did take a nice ride back home. (Thanks Butch for jumping in and helping to make this a good ride). Thanks to all for helping me to do this first ride of the year. It s been a long time but I made it. If you missed it what in the world were you doing? You should have been there. Debbie 9 9
