Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge July or Volume 26.2 NEWS from the CD s Phil and Lois Hollingsworth Chapter Directors Hi ya friends. Looks like we are back in the monsoon season. June sure did fly by. Summer always goes so fast and the years do seem to go faster. We managed to get some decent riding in during June. Last week s Buckeye Rally took us to Amish country in Wooster, Ohio, very nice riding around there. And our Campout was awesome fun as usual. (See my other article) Wing Ding is very near. Some of us will be there. We expect to have fun if it stops raining - reminds me of a song. The Ride for Kids is also coming up soon- at the end of July. There is still time to come along with the Royse's and Lois and me. We expect to enjoy that as well. If you do decide to come along we will be leaving some time Friday July 22. We will be staying overnight in Marysville and doing the ride Saturday and then returning home after the event. If you are interested in going contact Judy Royse. We are truly a very fortunate bunch. Sometimes when you really stop and think of just how much, you have to become overwhelmed with emotion. I am thinking of the upcoming Ride for Kids with Brain Cancer. You just can't imagine what it would be like to be that child or that parent. Chapter L will be donating the collection from the July gathering to the Ride for Kids. I am strongly urging the membership to "give till it feels good". Butch, Judy, Lois, and I will be going up for the ride. It is only 4 of us. Please help us make one of the biggest noises 4 people can make. If you donate with a check, please make it out to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Next time you kiss or hug your perfect children or grandkids, think of these kids that had no chance from the start. I can't fathom the courage it takes for them to face another day. Please be generous. Thank you. See you at the gathering July 20th at 7:30. Get there early to jaw if you wish. Until then.. Phil and Lois CD's Oh, almost forgot the progressive dinner ride on the 16th. See article for schedule for details.

L Y By Carl Hauser Well Rested Riders Finish First... Sleep. It sneaks up on you, and then takes you by surprise. Kind of like aging or gaining ounces that turn into pounds but faster. It s fine to be over-come by the sandman when you are home in your favorite lounger or between the sheets. But if you drift into dreamland or are sapped by fatigue on the highways and byways on your way home or to an appointment, look out. Or better said, WAKE UP! So, how can we help ourselves and our Co-Riders and traveling companions arrive safer? Well, to start with, don t leave on a trip when you are already tired. Working all night so that you can leave at 0-dark-thirty is not a good way to start. Well Rested Riders Finish First on a long trip. Either in a car or on your trusty motorcycle make frequent stops. At least every 1½ hours or miles, get off, walk around, Fill the tank, move the Wing to a safe location and rest. Take 5 or 10 minutes, have a beverage or a light snack. Test yourself for drowsiness. Can t remember the last few miles? Thoughts disconnected? Drifting in and out of your lane? Don t rely on strong coffee or loud music to make up for sleepiness. Make your daily destination distances reasonable. Longer distances the first day, not quite so long the second or third day. Ride to you/your Co-Rider and traveling companion s comfort level. If you intended to reach point X that day, but after 10 hours on the road, you find yourself 100 miles left to go, STOP. Get a motel room. Eat, relax and enjoy the evening and get a good nights rest. Starting the next morning fresh and relaxed will help you arrive at your destination safe and sound. Like I said, Well Rested Riders Finish First. And as always, always be watchful for the unwatchful. Greetings to all! It is truly good to be able to say that today. My apologies to all for not being there last meeting, but my doctor said no!! It seems that blood clots in the lungs have priority over anything else and I was VERY GLAD to heed to his demands. I look forward to seeing you all at next months meeting. Just a reminder to stay current with your GWRRA membership and also keep some cards and info with you in your bike pockets. You never know when an opportunity to inform someone of the benefits of GWRRA membership. Since the weather seems to be GREAT lately please remember to ride safe and stay alert to those who may not see you coming. Dan & Diane 3

Hopefully the rain has slowed down and we can look forward to beautiful riding weather, especially in the mountains of Tennessee at Wing Ding. The Hollingsworth s, Royse s, Russo s and Pott s will be staying in Pigeon Forge at the Rivers Edge Campground arriving on Wednesday the 6th. We plan to be at Wing Ding on Thursday to check out the vendors, etc. and spend the rest of the weekend riding in the mountains. In checking on our shirts we have the following and are interested in finding new homes for them. We have 6 of the old shirts which are selling for $5.00. We have 3 XL and 3 3XL. These shirts have the L logo. Surely you can find a use for one of these. We also have shirts that were ordered so that you could try them on when the new shirts were being ordered. These do not have anything printed on them. As the chapter has already paid for these we would like to sell them to recoup the funds for the chapter. We have the following with prices including tax. We will have them at the meeting so that you can check them out. MENS T-shirts l Large $ XL $6.77 LADIES Wicking 1 2X $12.77 T-shirts 1 Large $ XL $ X $6.16 Glad to hear Fred and Lorrie are back on three wheels and look forward to seeing them riding and at the meetings. Ride safe and enjoy the summer! Carol & Bill I enjoyed many aspects of the Buckeye Rally, especially when Butch would lead us on a ride in the Amish countryside. I can still taste those apple fritters from Miller s Bakery. The opening ceremonies where interesting all one hour and 45 minutes, although I only stayed for an hour and 15 minutes. Entirely too long for this newbie. The Pinewood Derby was fun with Steve and Bill s entries but who taught the GWRRA how to run a 2 and out tournament.? Basic Phys.Ed skills. I learned that I need some rally experience. The group definitely contributed to the economy with many vendor purchases. Butch outfitted his new 08 gold wing with a few items, while Jay and Phil added Baker air wings to their bikes. Who could ask for a better roomy in Phil, especially his enthusiasm for golf on TV. All in all, I would do it again. Riding up to Wooster with great people, (Carl and Chris, Butch and Judy, Dave and Marva Pettit, Steve, and Phil) and spending time with them this weekend make any rally enjoyable. Carl even let me lead the last hour home in a steady downpour of rain. This rookie says thanks for a great time! 4

July Anniversaries L July Birthdays HELLO! 3 Jim and Brenda Pennington 8 Clarence and Joaan Barber 17 Fred and Nolan Baurichter 19 Dave and Kathy King I WOULD LIKE TO SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ALL OF YOU! MAYBE I SHOULD BUY A HORSE AND BECOME "Pauline Revere" AND DELIVER YOUR SPECIAL WISHES PERSONALLY. EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE STAYING HEALTHY. IT WAS GREAT SEEING JOE AND TERRY ROSEMEYER, MIKE AND JUDY O'ROURKE, AND FRED AND LORI MANNING AT THE CAMP OUT DINNER. EVERYONE THAT WAS ABLE TO PARTICIPATE, "Thank You". WE HAD AN "L" OF A GOOD TIME. By Pauline Boderone THANK YOU GAIL AND RANDY, YOU DID A SUPURB JOB AGAIN! Tom Barth 9 Richard Elsen 11 Angie Beeber 14 Janet Bohanan 16 Jim Jauch 18 Shirley Hauck 24 Cindy Jauch 28 Peg Muchmore 28 Yvonne Tieke 31 Tom Sullivan 31 L Yes Update on Fred Manning Yes he is continuing to improve. We saw the Orthopedist on Wed June 22 and things are looking good and will continue to heal for the next 6 to 8 months. He is going to the Cincinnati VA 2 times a week for more Physical therapy in July, PLUS has exercises to do at home. He gets tired easily so we are just doing things in small doses. We have been out on the Trike, with our longest trip down to see the camping crew Saturday. All in preparation to head out to Wing Ding on Saturday July 2. Lori Come help us celebrate! Once again we will be offering hot dogs, chips, and a drink. With inflation and age, it will be 26 cents this year. We will also be having a silent auction. Come see what you can t live without and perhaps donate an item for the auction. August 17th, 6:30 at the Green Township Senior Center 5

Buckeye Rally: Amish country is unbelievable, the way those people keep their properties in such beautiful condition is a site to see. They are very rich people - rich with land, family, and friends. Our parents always spoke of the good ole days; the Amish are really still living them. Their neighbors are still the extended family. I'm not saying I'm ready to trade in the Wing or anything else for that matter. Their life never got in a hurry and they sure don't seem to be suffering. Anyway, it was very beautiful up there and thanks to Butch and Judy we got to see lots of land. They led Jay Silver and me all over. We followed faithfully. Huge thanks go out to Steve Albert and Bill Pott for carving out our Pine Wood Derby cars. Steve added a little weight to Bill's roadster. He took one of the seat handle bolts out of his bike and taped it on top of the car. It was running very well in the loser s bracket, but lost in the second to last heat. We thought a protest was in order but then figured what Everyone had fun with the races. Dave and Marva Petit joined us at the Rally, it's always nice to see them. Also at the Rally, Chuck and Melanie Gegge announced they were stepping down from their position as District Ride Educators. We thank them for their many years of service. They will be missed. And, Carl was promoted to Senior Ride Educator! Chapter Campout: This past weekend was the Chapter camp out. Another masterful job put together by Randy and Gail Hiser. It was the driest weekend in the last few, no rain til after all events were complete. What more could you ask for? We ate a few things. Smoked ribs thanks to Tim and Anita. Saturday's breakfast was Scottish eggs and biscuit dough donuts. Very good! If you don't know what a Scottish egg is, it is a hardboiled egg, wrapped in sausage, dipped in egg wash, rolled in bread crumbs, and deep fried to golden brown - not very healthy, but oh so tasty. Dinner was crawfishless Louisiana Pot Boil with potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, corn, and polish sausage. All boiled to perfection and poured out on a sheeted table - a truly beautiful sight. It was also Kathy Burns' birthday so we had cake for desert. Thanks Kathy for getting older for us. Evenings were garnished by nice warm campfires and minty fresh breathed mosquitos. Gail sprayed mint flavored Listerine on the grounds to control mosquitos. It must have worked, I only got bit once. Bear and Judy came down for dinner. It was wonderful seeing them. Also there for dinner was Joe and Terri Rosemeyer, and Fred and Lori stopped by on the trike. It was great to see them also. Thinking ahead and also of time gone by, it seems like no time at all since Chapter L turned 21. The years seem to fly after you turn 21. Here we are looking in the face of being 26. OMG! As we have in the past two years, we will have a hot dog grill out in the Green Township Senior Center parking lot before the August meeting, 6:30 to 7:30 on the 17th of Aug. As I said we are thinking ahead. Due to rising costs and symbolism we are forced to tack on another penny. This year you will have to cough up 26 cents for a hot dog, bag of chips, and a drink. Please come on out and celebrate with us. Why are they smiling? Great job Steve! The Cars! Chapter L doing gate duty. Who enjoys it more? No, that s not Ellie! 6

hat a great weekend for camping! We couldn t ask for anything better. It W was chilly on Friday night so a fire was great to sit around. Saturday was just perfect, hot and sunny. We had a few visitors on Saturday. Fred and Lori Manning were testing out Fred s knee on their trike. Carl and Cris drove both bikes for a visit too. Joe and Terry Rosemeyer, Bear and Judy and Butch and Judy came for supper. 36 in all ate the pot boil. Later in the evening we played Frisbee golf. See the picture of one hole, they were asked to bring a pot. Another great way to use the throne. With every outing there is always something to laugh about. Keys was the key word for this weekend. Gail arrived on Thursday afternoon, realized she didn t have her camper keys and had to go home to get them. Randy was not coming out until after work on Friday. Friday evening the Hiser s friends Ray and Sue Bross went to Cheesy s for dinner and took their pizza to the park in Rising Sun to watch the river. Ray locked his keys in the truck and had to have the police unlock the truck to get them out. They at least offered the policeman a slice of pizza. Kathy and Mickey arrived really late on Friday night then realized Mickey had the bowling alley keys in her pocket. It was the only set they had, so she drove back early on Saturday morning to give them back. Our next campout is September 9 & 10. Gail has the sites, so please see her if you are going. The theme for that weekend is Grandparents. Which hole is that? Great Food!!!! Scottish Eggs Pot Boil! One of our community projects this year will be with a local no-kill animal shelter called Animal Adoption Foundation located on US 27 about 6 miles north of I-275. They house nearly 85 animals right now and are a non-profit organization relying on fundraisers and the donations of good hearted generous folks like us. What we would like to do is collect items they could use. See the "wish list" at the website. AAF is a wonderful organization doing a great job. They just need a little help and I know we can contribute to that. Please check out their website. We are simply asking that the next time you come to a meeting, or "meet & eat" or whatever...please find it in your heart to donate at least one item. You can give them to Patti, Roger, or Phil & Lois. We hope to get a sizeable donation together. Thanks for all the donations so far. I am taking the current items to the Animal Adoption Foundation soon. This way they can start to make use of the items we have for them and then we will continue to collect donations through Labor Day and I will drop those items off shortly after that. The little kitties and doggies appreciate everyone s generous donations! THANK YOU!!! 7

By Debbie Winkler H i Everyone, Warm weather is upon us so please be safe out there. As Phil mentioned in his article, at our next meeting, our collection will be for Ride for Kids so let s dig deep and help these kids out. Every penny helps. Thanks goes to the following: Pauline Boderoni, Carol & Bill Pott, Randy & Gail Hiser, Bud Hensler, Lois Hollingsworth, Patti Anderson, Mark & Linda Simmons, Walt Bohanon, Roy & Kathy Richard, Jim & Brenda Pennington, Butch Royse for all their wonderful donations for doorprizes. Congrats goes to Gail Hiser, Mark Simmon, Lois Hollingsworth, Randy Hiser, Jim Pennington, Kathy Richard, Butch Royse, Phil Hollingsworth, Judy Royse, Carl Hauser, Bud Hensler, Brenda Pennington, Carol Pott, and Barb Burns. Please keep all of our members (family) in your prayers. Hugs and Kisses to all Debbie & Mr. B By Barb Burns T his month I interviewed Norman Bud and Nancy Hensler. The Hensler s will be married 47 years on July 3 rd and live in Bright, Indiana. Bud and Nancy have three children, Tammy (Ronald) Byers, Terry Hensler and Tom (Debbie) Hensler. They have six grandchildren, Travis, Alexis, Joseph, Jason, Zackary and Grace. They also have a dog named Harley. Bud heard about Chapter L through the Gold Book and has been a member with Nancy for 15 years. He has been riding a motorcycle for 60 years and currently owns a Gray 1998 Honda Goldwing. Nancy has ridden with Bud on and off for the last 47 years. The Hensler s are retired and Bud rides all year long. He manages to but on 25,000 to 35,000 miles a year on his motorcycle and has been all over the place. Bud has never kept track of his mileage but has probably ridden over a million miles in his lifetime. Besides riding his motorcycle Bud enjoys gardening and fishing. Nancy enjoys gardening, singing and listening to music. They both enjoy being with their family especially playing with their grandchildren. So the next time you see Bud and Nancy you can say I ve gotten to know you better. Barb 8

W ell July is coming on strong and by the time you read this Wing Ding will be added to the history books. We are unable to attend Wing Ding this year because of family situations. Brenda s brother from Colorado is in town and her sister who lives in Texas is here also. I know we will miss all the Wing Ding events and the International Couple of the Year Selection. We truly hope that our long time friends, Kirby and Sandy White, our Region D Couple does a great job representing the Region. We wish Kirby and Sandy all the luck we can muster and we sincerely hope by the time you read this we will have another ICOY. Speaking of Wing Ding - 10 Years ago Wing Ding was in Greenville, SC. Jack Elsen won the on the first draw and collected $ Jack was always lucky that way. We planned and put together the Christmas in July ride and it was so hot, if there was any snow, it would have been water in about 20 seconds. We had fun thinking it would be nice to visit a Christmas Store so we did. We had a great turn-out even though there was no snow! Then 10 years ago we were preparing for our Chapter L to have it s 16 th birthday in August and we were calling it our Sweet Sixteen birthday party. We even had (invalid) Driver s License by the Chapter made up by Tim and Anita Kendrick. Fun, yes! We were also planning on riding on the Labor Day ride come to think of it I remember it was very wet well it was! We followed Jim and Pauline Petroviak along with quite a few others to Lynchburg, TN to visit and tour the Jack Daniel s Distillery. It was a fun time and Brenda and I were on our maiden tour on our 2002 Illusion Blue Gold Wing. Did I tell you it rained well it did, off and on the entire weekend and on our way home, we stopped at a McDonalds in Northern Kentucky to dry off. I made a decision right there in the parking lot, as I took my boots off and dumped about a pint of water out of each one I ordered Cruiserworks waterproof boots the next week. The boots came a week later and they fit perfectly and my feet have never been wet again while riding. Actually, I find it hard to believe that so much has happened it the last 10 years. Looking back, I see where we had a ride to the AMA Museum led by Dick Pettit and to the museum where the main display was The Century of the Indian. After the museum visit we headed over to Dave and Marva Pettit s place where we relaxed for awhile. Joyce Jones organized her 5 th annual Jumpin Jam in August which was a Fun Run with festivities beginning at the Sports Page Café and ending at the Jones home in Mt. Carmel where food was plentiful. So much has happened in the last 10 years and so many people are still attending our Chapter gatherings. Some of our older members are not riding much anymore but still come out on our Wednesday gathering night. We encourage everyone to come out to our July meeting and kick a few tires with friends. 9

W e will be having three food stops this year. It will begin by meeting at Wendy s in Miamitown at 11:30 to make the short ride to Frank and Chris Russo s house for appetizers and salads (noon).
