Shade Tree A s Volume 35 No. 8, August Thoughts from the President... I am quite impressed with the exposure the STA s are receiving largely because of you, our members. I won t attempt to name all the events the STA s have attended outside the Augusta area this year but a few do come to mind, i.e. Moultrie, Charlotte, Johnston City, Greenwood, Maggie Valley, Forsyth, Unicoi, Addison, Lexington, Gilbert, Tacoma, and we are not done yet. In addition, our newsletter and web site are read by many every month hundreds of miles away. The two Model A national magazines almost always have an article about our recent tours and activities. For a club that is celebrating our 35 th anniversary in 2008, way to go! You folks know how to party. I am also encouraged by the number of ladies and youth that are actively involved in the club. For an organization that started out largely by men for men, you have come a long way baby. Although, the club is focused on the preservation and restoration of the Model A Ford and it s the men that usually are seen with the skinned knuckles and grease under their finger nails, I m convinced that the club would not be as active or successful either now or in the future without the active participation of the Shady A Ladies or youth. Your continued involvement and support is key to the success and longevity of the Shade Tree A s. Have a Safe Trip, Craig Youth Honorary Membership Policy As with all club members, Youth Honorary Members shall show an interest in the Model A and demonstrate a desire to take an active part in club activities. Youth Honorary Members shall: Be less than 18 years of age Receive a hard copy of the newsletter at a cost determined by the Board of Directors Receive a membership ID card, club hat, and name tag Youth Honorary Members are not eligible to: Vote Hold elected office A Youth Honorary Member does not have to be related to another club member. Membership Meeting, pages 3-4 Board of Directors, page 4 The July Monthly Meeting of the STAs was held July 14, 2008, at member Richard Dunevent s garage at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President, Craig McMullin. The attendance sheet was passed around and showed 40 present. There were several visitors. Glenn Boswell introduced Rachel d Entremont of Aiken, SC, who recently purchased Glenn s roadster. Michael Gordon introduced his parents, Mike and Tonya Gordon, his sister, Heather, and his brother, Dustin. Jim McPherson introduced his grandson, Cameron. Illnesses included R.B. Barbee, who recently had surgery on his arm, and Anne Neely-Beck, who was recently hospitalized. Please remember these club members and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Ralph Neitzke also thanked members for the card and donation sent to his family during Tina s recent illness. He reported that Tina is progressing. The Treasurer s Report was given by Treasurer, Richard Dunevent and the June Meeting Minutes as published in the July Newsletter were approved. For Show-n-Tell, Pascal Bryant brought in pictures of a 1926 Model T located in Aiken County that is for sale. Anyone interested should contact Pascal. Richard Dunevent shared an after-market choke rod and a transmission seal. Old Business: The Trenton Peach Festival We had 10 cars, the weather was pleasant not too hot, and it was one of the better parades with lots of participants and festival goers. Bill Adams reported on the MAFCA/MARC World Meet in Addison, TX the STA s had a number of cars participate. Jim Mason eventually made the trip after several flat tires on his trailer. Tom Roberts reported on the Gilbert Peach Festival, with 5 cars from the STA s and 2 from Columbia. Again, the weather was pleasant, not as hot as it has been in the past. And as usual, there was a huge crowd. New Business: The Youth Honorary Membership Policy was read by secretary, Theresa McMullin. (Please see the policy in the column to the left.) President McMullin reported that Jim McPherson checked at the World Meet with the national organizations and neither offer youth memberships. However, they strongly support youth involvement and activities.

4 Shade Tree A s Volume 35 No. 8, August 2008 President McMullin introduced Michael Gordon to the meeting members and made a motion to bestow an honorary membership on him. Tony Gazette seconded the motion; it passed unanimously. President McMullin presented Michael with a Youth Honorary Membership ID card, club hat, and name tag. Michael s name was sent to MAFCA for receipt of A World magazine. Tour director, Eric Shogren went over the tour schedule for the coming months. Please see the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter. With no further business, the program (Alternators), presented by Eric Shogren, was introduced by Jim McPherson and the business meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Theresa McMullin, Secretary July 10, 2008 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes The Board of Directors met at member Richard Dunevent s garage on July 10, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. All board members were present. President McMullin discussed the year-to-date budget and solicited any ideas for income for the club. McMullin will be contacting those companies with ads in the newsletter for more advertising dollars. Youth membership was discussed. Vice President Jim McPherson reported that he contacted the national organizations at the World Meet in Addison, TX, and they do not offer youth membership. They do encourage youth involvement and the national organizations sponsor youth activities. The Board discussed our youth and voted on the Policy shown in this newsletter on page 3. After reviewing the club activity schedule and with no further business, the meeting was adjourned. See you at the Respectfully submitted, Theresa McMullin, Secretary Saturday, August 16, 2008 Breakfast at Sunrise Grill on Washington Road, 8 a.m. Then it s on to Richard s Garage about 9 a.m.! FLORA S STORY Flora s creator, Larry Komp, says: Sometime in the winter of 1964 my father, Cy Komp, made the remark "Why is that smelly pile of Flora & Fauna occupying the carport where the station wagon should be parked? (My Model A DID have that organically-grown look with the top off, rust and primer finish, no interior, and 21 inch, 19 inch, & 16 inch wheels, and yes, I was taking up valuable carport space parking it there, jacked up while the family wagon and Ford Falcon had to sit out in the open.) In fact, when my dad's friend from work stopped by to visit, my car made such an impression on him that he had two gallons of industrial red primer immediately donated and delivered to my house! He continues: When I created this story for my niece in about , (she was about 2 at the time), I remembered Flora, and it became the car s name! I made a hand-colored copy for my daughter when she was little; then I sort of forgot about it! Thanks, Larry for sharing Flora s adventures with us!! Don Turley is feeling quite well after his successful second surgery. Way to go, Don! Jim McPherson underwent knee replacement July 22. We wish him a speedy, happy recovery. On his vacation, Larry Komp biked 400 miles in 5 days on the beautiful Crooked Road trail in western Virginia. Anne Neely-Beck spent three days in the hospital after returning from Dallas. Hope you re feeling better now, Anne. The modern charcoal briquet was invented by automaker Henry Ford. Prior to 1920, Ford operated a sawmill in the forests around Iron Mountain, MI to make wooden parts for his Model T. As the piles of wood scraps began to grow, so did Ford's eagerness to find an efficient way of using them. He learned of a process that involved chipping wood into small pieces, converting it into charcoal, grinding the charcoal into powder, adding a binder and compressing the mix into the nowfamiliar, pillow-shaped briquet. By 1921, a charcoalmaking plant was in full operation. Ford closed the sawmill in 1951 and the chemical plant was sold to a group of local investors. They renamed the enterprise the Kingsford Chemical Company and the product Kingsford Charcoal Briquets. (Look on the back of the bag!)

6 Shade Tree A s Volume 35 No. 8, August 2008 RIDGE PEACH FESTIVAL Trenton, SC June 21, 2008 It was a beautiful sunny day in Trenton, with ten Model As in parade and lots of scrumptious peaches. The STA cars in the line-up included the McMullins; Stuart Smith and his mom, Katherine Oxford; Eric Shogren, Larry DuVall (in his first STA parade!), two Gordon cars driven by George and William and occupied by Gordon family members; Ken and Linda Nelson, Ed Garvin and Pat and Tom Roberts. Thomas Lamb from Aiken also joined in the festivities. George Gordon s granddaughter Lisa Hooker created an original peach flag just for these summer occasions. George displayed it on his truck. After the parade, we displayed our cars in a (relatively) shady area, then made the rounds of the vendors and listened to the patriotic music and I think some of us may have even had a few peach treats! LEXINGTON CO. PEACH FESTIVAL Gilbert, SC July 4, 2008 This year was the 50th Anniversary of Lexington County s Peach Festival, and we were there to help them celebrate! Those participating were Eric & Dotti Shogren, George Gordon (with Michael riding shotgun ), Don Gordon, Tom & Pat Roberts, a and Ed Garvin. The Booths from the Palmetto A s added their two vehicles to our lineup that, too, has become a tradition! Top: Lisa Hooker s peach flag Center: Theresa McMullin, Larry DuVall, Linda and Ken Nelson and Craig McMullin before the parade Right: Katherine Oxford and her son, Stuart Smith, all dressed up for the parade! Top: (L) Tom Roberts, Sharon & Orville Booth, Don and George Gordon Sharon & Orville are members of the Palmetto A s. (R) Ed Garvin had to secure his frisky A to a light post at Hardee s it wanted to GO! Bottom: (L) Starting up the Gilbert Hill crowds were HUGE. (R) We re reflected in Hardee s windows in Batesburg/Leesville. The infamous Gilbert Hill proved to be no Match for our sturdy Model A s. Henry would be proud!

Robert Taylor, their President, has invited any interested members of the Shade Tree A s to join them. They will be attending the 25th Annual Candlelight Tour Festival in Warm Springs Village. The Warm Springs, GA calendar of events list this as: Experience Christmas the Warm Springs way! Start your holiday season here in Warm Springs! The annual Candlelight Tour, a holiday highlight that must be experienced to be appreciated, is held the weekend before Thanksgiving and begins the holiday celebration with candlelit streets and shop owners dressed in period costumes. The Candlelight tradition began over twenty-four years ago when one shop owner rolled a piano onto the sidewalk and invited shoppers to join in singing traditional Christmas carols. When night time fell, candles were placed on the sidewalks and the holiday celebration continued for hours! That tradition still holds true today! For more information check out the following link: Robert Taylor and his merry band will be departing Fayetteville, GA about 9:30 am on Friday, November 21. Folks wishing to trailer to Fayetteville will be able to leave their rigs at a local BBQ house. 8 8 Shade Tree A s Volume 35 No. 8, August 2008 ( with a little help from the Magic Paper Clip).Eric Shogren The most common alternator used in a Model A is a Delco-Remy 10si or GM alternator. These were and still are very common alternators for GM cars. I recently had a bearing go bad in 6 volt, positive ground, 60 amp alternator and was faced with the prospect of having to haul to a repair shop for replacement. Now, I ve replaced a few bearings in a Model A and I figured it couldn t be that hard in an alternator. I knew from past experience the problem was the brushes. They are spring loaded to ride on the commutator which is in the back of an alternator casing with no way to hold them in position when you pull the rotor out of the casing; or so I thought. Frustrated, I started doing a little searching on the Web. What I found was a very helpful website ( addressing how to rebuild a Delco-Remy 10si alternator. That is where I learned about the Magic Paper Clip and it all became very easy. 1. To tear down one of these you remove the four screws on the back of the casing holding the two halves of the casing together as seen in Figure 1. Be sure to note the orientation of the two halves. This is important so that when you reassemble the alternator you have them in the correct relative orientation. 2. Next you remove the front half of the casing. You will have had to remove the pulley first. Once you have the front half of the casing off you see the rotor and the stator (windings) as shown in Figure 2. Be careful not to lift the rotor out of the rear of the housing at this point because you release the brushes. If you do, don t worry, there s still the Magic Paper Clip. Figure 1 Figure 2 To replace the front bearing you will see (Figure 3) a simple three screw bearing retainer that can be unscrewed and the bearing driven out. The replacement bearing is a NAPA RSJ or equivalent. Press in the new bearing, screw on the retainer, slide the front half of the casing back on and you re done. Figure 4 But what if you did like I did and unevenly pulled on the front casing and lifted the rotor out of the rear casing; Figure 3 releasing the brushes? Well now comes time for the Magic Paper Clip. As seen in Figure 4 the brushes are spring loaded and will come completely free of the brush holders. Well, the brush holder, as seen in the upper left of Figure 4, has a hole in both the top and bottom that is just made for a paper clip. You hold one brush in the holder and slide the paper clip through the hole in the brush holder and over the face of the brush. Then you hold in the second brush and slide the paper clip across the face of the second brush and into the hole on the other side of the brush holder. What makes this magic? There is a hole in the rear casing of the alternator that once the alternator is assembled, the paper clip sticks out of that hole! Just grab it with your fingers and pull it out you have a completely assembled alternator. One more thing that makes it a Magic Paper Clip ; if you do like I did and try to use the alternator with the paper clip in place it won t charge worth a darn. That s on repair. The next (and probably most common) repair comes when your alternator quits charging. Most of the components of an alternator you have to really work at to damage except for the voltage regulator. It is a solid state electronic gizmo seen in Figure 5. Like most things electronic, heat is the enemy, and failure of the voltage regulator is the most likely cause of the alternator failing to charge. On page 10, you ll learn how to replace a voltage regulator: Figure 5

Shade Tree A s Volume 35 No. 8, August First, you remove the front half of the casing as noted in steps 1 and 2 above. 2. Next, you lift out the rotor (Figure 6) and look into the back half of the alternator casing (Figure 7). Figure 6 3. On the left of Figure 7 you will see 3 bolts with insulator rings around them. They hold the brush holder on top of the voltage regulator and both the brush holder and the voltage regulator to the casing. Figure 7 4. If you look back at Figure 1 you see two spades of the voltage regulator sticking out the alternator casing. On a 6 volt, positive ground, alternator those two spades are probably covered by a square piece of rubber that can be easily pried off with a screw drive. Don t throw it away you ll need to put it back on later. 5. Next you remove the three bolts holding the brush holder and the voltage regulator and remove the two. 6. The easiest place I found to get a replacement voltage regulator was at the Quick Start Automotive Electric website. The part number is Part No. D10SE61 and the link to the specific part is: ( store.alternatorparts.com/index.asp?pageaction=viewprod&prodid=1743). It runs about $25 plus shipping. You can also order a complete repair kit with instructions for about $30. It is Part No. D110SiSE6VRK and the link to that product is: ( 7. Once you have the replacement voltage regulator put the two brushes back in the brush holder and hold them in place with the Magic Paper Clip as seen in Figure Pass the three bolts with their insulators in place through the brush holder and the voltage regulator and screw them in place as seen in Figure At this point is also a great opportunity to apply some grease to the needle bearing in the back of the casing. 10. Set the rotor back in the casing as seen in Figure Put the front half of the casing back on and bolt it back up with four long bolts. Be sure to put the two halves back together in the same relative orientation as you found them. Magic Paper Clip Pull the Magic Paper Clip out the back of the housing. When you install the alternator on the car you may have to excite the voltage regulator the first time to get it charging. Remember that square rubber plug we removed from the two spades of the voltage regulator? Well, if you look closely you will see and #1 and #2 stamped in the outside of the casing next to those two spades. To excite the voltage regulator, while the car is running with alternator installed, you momentarily touch a wire to the alternator casing to the spade with the #1 stamped next to it. The alternator should start charging... if you removed the Magic Paper Clip. P.S. Did I remember to tell you that first you must straighten the Magic Paper Clip?? Don t Forget. Saturday, August 16, 2008 Breakfast at the Sunrise Grill on Washington Road, 8 a.m. Then it s on to Richard s Garage about 9 a.m.!
