1 the BOARD '3-o O BATTEN OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 1985 CHRSTMAS AT THE NNS' TOUR Five of Pacific Grove's unique and charming bed and breakfast inns will open their doors for your holiday enjoyment on Tuesday, December 10, 1985, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., for an evening "Christmas at the nns' tour. The Pacific Grove Art Center and Pacific Grove Heritage Society invite you to participate in this first annual "Christmas at the nns" tour and have the opportunity of meeting the friendly and gracious innkeepers. The Centrella Hotel, Gosby House nn, Green Gables nn, Martine nn and Old St. Angela nn will serve traditional holiday refreshments in their parlors arrayed in yuletide nostalgia. Local musicians will provide sounds of the season to entertain you while you are basking in the holiday cheer and warm hospitality of each of the inns. The Pacific Grove Art Center will also be included on the tour and will feature continuous entertainment and refresr.ments for young people. A puppet show and a visit by "Santa" are planned. You may drop your children off at the Art Center and then proceed on your visit to the inns. Tickets at $7.50 each for the "Christmas at the nns" tour will be available at the Pacific Grove Art Center, 568 Lighthouse Avenue, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.; at the Pacific Grove Floral Company, 217 Forest Avenue, during regular business hours; at the Chamber of Commerce office at the corner of Forest and Central; or by calling the Pacific Grove Heritage Society,

Upon the advice of Dr. Trimmer, he opened a drugstore on Lighthouse Avenue in 1887 with the intention of keeping it open only during the summer season. However, business was good and he remained open for over 50 years. Many of his original glass plate negative are stored at the museum. Present

3 REMEMBERNG... Pacific Grove Chinatown The point just southeast of Lovers' Point has an official name, am sure, but it was locally called Organ Point, because the waves, dashing against a certain part of it sounded like the tones of an organ, or China Point because Chinatown was located on its base. t was a picturesque community, built largely of scrap lumber. There was quite a nice Joss House in the Center, and a wandering path through the village leading to Rice Shell Beach. The Chinese were fishermen who fished from small sail boats. The squid that they caught were spread on the ground in a nearby field. When they were dried, we understood they were raked up, bagged, and sent to China. Some of the larger fish were peddled from door to door in Pacific Grove and Monterey. The fish were put in a basket hung on the end of a pole. A basket at the other end held their knives and a board. Carrying the pole across their shoulders, they went through the streets blowing a whistle to alert the housewives, who went out and selected a fish from the still-wiggling mass. The Chinaman would take out this board and knives and sit down on the ground to clean and scale the fish, then put the refuse in his basket and be on his way.,_ Chinatown ' PAT HATHAWAY COLLECTON The original Feast of Lanterns in Pacific Grove was a parade of the Chinese sailboats, outlined in the colorful lanterns, moving silently through the water as they were rowed from their mooring grounds on the far side of the point, to Lovers' Point and back. The line of boats reached from point to point. There was no shoreside entertainment, no fireworks, just the quiet dignity of the boats. t was a sight we looked forward to each summer. And then one night in 1906 fire struck the little community and it was burned to the ground in just a few minutes. We watched with dismay from our house as the flames ate up the little homes. t was an awesome sight. The Chinese quietly disappeared, and some years later the Hopkins Marine Station was built just back of the site of the little Chinatown. -Elizabeth Bean Telfer ( ')

New Members Jennie Culp Dollar Sherry and Gary Brockman Lorraine Evans Mildred White Hicks Mr. and Mrs. Norris Littlepage Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beard Keith and Carolyn Kennedy First Public Schoolhouse in Pacific Grove photo Above is the first public school building in Pacific Grove. t opened on Monday, April 13, 1891 on Pine Avenue and served the city until 1919 when it was replaced by Robert Down School on the same location. When the building first opened in 1891, there were four classes: high school, 2 elementary and a kindergarten. The four teachers wereprofessor G.W. Gretter (also the principal), Mrs. J.D. Rogers, Mrs. M.G. Hood and Miss Nellie Waring. By 1901, enrollment had increased to the point where grades 1 thru 4 were taught in the small building to the left rear in photo which faced on Spruce. The high school occupied the main floor of the schoolhouse while the remaining grades were upstairs. Although this was the first actual public school building, school classes were first taught in 1884 by Miss Carrie Lloyd in a room at the rear of Chautaugua Hall Would you like to join us?
