2 Registered Charity No Chairman s Message - April, 2017 Easter has now come and gone along with our coffee morning. Those who came to it seemed to enjoy the social and seemed to appreciate the raffle prizes on offer this year. Most people bought an extra ticket or two in view of the value of the prizes. The AGM is next, so please give some thought as to whether you could do anything for your U3A. Your U3A needs YOU. There will be vacancies for committee members. If you have any queries please feel free to contact me. Speaker - 27 th April Rhiannon Chamberlain The Dogs Trust, Bridgend Gardening Our next garden visit is on Friday 12 th May. We are going to The Old Vicarage,Llangeler, Llandysul SA44 5EU. Entry is 2.50 and teas 2.50 in aid of NGS.

3 Music Appreciation We were lower in numbers last month. Fine if you are gallivanting, but we were sorry that Rosemary was not well enough to attend; we were very pleased to see her at the main meeting looking her usual bright self. We next meet on 28th May at 2pm. Please bring a good selection of music. Do not forget to indicate the track you wish me to play, (last time a cd was rather sad, as it had attended three times and I ignored it!) also add your name. Remember we welcome all. So why not give me a ring for directi Current Affairs The session was soon after the March budget, a not- so- enthralling one and soon overridden, in part, by the Chancellor's boss. Of local interest was the upcoming ferry crossing between Llansteffan and Ferryside. An 820 foot long jetty is required and an amphibious vehicle is mooted. We heard of super intelligent octopuses, or is it octopi, who, in captivity exhibit the ability to show a keeper displeasure by emphatically depositing yuk food straight down the waste shoot, and other antics. You really couldn't make it up. The pros and cons of smart meters were discussed with some consensus against them, their inaccuracies, their cost etc. Sunday Lunch 21 st MAY Cresselly Arms, Pontargothi, 12.30pm

4 Jazz Group The next meeting will be on 9 th May and will consist of British jazz music from the 30's to the present day. Among those featured will be George Melly, Ted Heath, Bristol based "Paper Moon" and a special track introduced by Radio 3 Jazz Record Request presenter, Alun Shipton. Film Group 'Sense and Sensibility' somehow morphed into ' Mill on the Floss' and fortunately no one seemed to mind. Hurrah for the tolerant members of Carmarthen U3A! It was a very enjoyable film, great drama and wonderful locations. That is the end of our film season for now. I have handed the long list of possible films for next year to the librarian and we have to wait to find out what she can source. So no more lazy Monday film afternoons until September, when I hope to see you all again and any other film enthusiasts in the U3A, plus friends and family. Walking Group In March we commenced a walk from Tenby South Beach car park and walked through the town above the beach and on towards North Beach. We then began a gradual climb on to the coast path and stopped for a coffee break at Allens Point. This is a nice area with sea views and many wild flowers. We then proceeded downhill to Waterwynch Bay. A lane was then followed to a footpath where we crossed a field to reach the A478 which was crossed to reach a track, turned left under a railway bridge and into the beautiful woods of Cornish Down, with plenty of mud to negotiate.

5 We eventually came to the ruins Of Scotsborough House hidden in the trees. In the 17th Century the house was the residence of Thomas Ap Rhys, a High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire. Our walk continued along a track onto a marked winter walk, through more woods, and concluded with a route back to South Beach. There were 19 walkers, including a new member, Howard Williams, and Gill and Ivor who have recently moved to Chepstow. Refreshments were enjoyed at the South Beach bar and grill. The next walk will be in the Lliw Reservoir area on the 24th May and will be led by Angela and Maud, (Distance just under 5 miles). 6 Discussion Group In my absence, our April discussion was chaired by John Hodkinson. We, as a group, and especially me as leader, are very fortunate to have such a willing and able person prepared to step into the breach when I am away and his efforts are very much appreciated by us all. Our next meeting will be at our usual venue on Wednesday 10 th May when I shall be back in the chair. This meeting will take a slightly different format as we shall have a guest who will co-chair the meeting. Our guest will be Elize Freeman, a research assistant at Aberystwyth University. She is currently carrying out a three year study into domestic elder abuse in the pilot areas of Carmarthenshire and Cardiff. As part of the study she is also looking at healthy relationships throughout the lifecycle. She will be leading a discussion on what people look for in relationships with family and friends as well as attitudes to ageing. Why not start to think about this very interesting topic straight away and maybe make a few notes of your thoughts as you do so? This meeting should be a very positive and slightly different experience for us all. All U3A members are welcome to come along and join in our discussion, we meet at Hanover Court, SA31 1TQ. Doors open at 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start and we wind up at 3.00pm. We look forward to seeing you.

7 Art Appreciation Van Gogh's chaotic life probably began with his mother's lack of interest, followed by a deeply hurtful rejection by an English schoolmistress. This drew him to the Church, when, with great zeal, he gave all his possessions to the poor. Further unrequited love threw him even more off balance and he ended up living with a prostitute in Paris and contracting syphilis and gonorrhoea and drinking Absinthe, finally cutting off his ear before shooting himself. Talk about suffering for your art!! Still, from such misery we have some of the best loved and most expensive paintings ever created. As you all probably know, poor old Van Gogh hardly saw a franc. Our second DVD was the last in the series 'High Art in the Low Countries'. This one dealt with 'Daydreams and NIghtmares', a very illuminating film about the move into abstract and surrealist art probably brought on by the decline in religion and the boom in trade. Nature abhors a vacuum! Our next films will be 'Baroque Art' and 'Leonardo'. Everyone welcome. History Group Our next meeting on Wednesday 17 th May will be held at Carmarthen Museum, usual time 2.00 p.m. Plenty of parking space available. Mr Evans, the Curator will tell us about the present building, "The Bishop's Palace" and its history. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

8 Oriel Talk for U3A On Friday 10th April many of us enjoyed a Gallery talk organised in partnership with Carmarthen U3A. Professor Robert Meyrick of Aberystwyth University gave us an informative illustrated talk on the legacy to Wales in art and welfare of Gwendoline and Margaret Davies. This was followed by tea and cakes in the Gallery. We would like to thank the Oriel Myriddin and Seren Stacey and her team for a most enjoyable afternoon and we look forward to cooperation for further events in the near future.
