The summer heat is here and some of the rides I ve been on recently have been down right hot. I actually took the lowers off of my bike this past Saturday so I can move a little more air and hopefully be a little cooler when riding. Here s a good question for all you hardcore HOG riders. What have you done to make your ride cooler or what actions do you take to make yourself more comfortable while riding in hot weather? Bring your answers to the next chapter meeting and share them with your fellow HOG members. I m sure that each of you has a little trick up their sleeve to combat the heat and many of us may learn something if you will be kind enough to share. Clayton County HOG has had a very busy year thus far riding and having fun. I hope you have all been enjoying the rides, as the Road Captains are continuing to look for fun rides to do. Remember, if there is something that interests you or some place you want to ride to, please let one of the officers know and we will see if we can make it happen.. The Road Captain for dinner rides for the month of July is Peggy Glaze. She has rides scheduled every Wednesday night. You can find the location of the dinner rides or any of our rides scheduled on the website. A big thank you to Frank Basile for heading up the June dinner rides as we ve had some good food with good friends. One of the rides scheduled for July is the annual Dale Moorefield ride that will travel from McDonough to Bostwick Georgia to eat some barbecue. Steve Sullivan will be the Road Captain so look for details on the website and calendar. Well to close this article, I would like to pass on my sincere appreciation to each and every Clayton County HOG member that makes this chapter a great one to belong to. Each of you, both officers and members, riders and passengers, lifetime HOG members, full HOG members and associate HOG members are very special to me and I applaud you for the effort you put forth to attend rides, meetings, events, and for supporting your chapter in many ways that even I may not be aware of. This includes the owners, managers and staff of Harley-Davidson of Clayton County who will go above and beyond for their chapter members. Until next time Ride and Have Fun! Robert Glaze Director

Safety Officer While this article will appear in the July issue of Hog Troff, I am writing it on Father s Day so it seems appropriate to stray a bit from the normal article subject and think a bit about where we were first bit by the motorcycle bug. I m sure that we all have our own stories of when we decided to get our first bike, maybe it was early in our life, or later, in the adult years. No matter where or when that was it is the bond that attracts us all together. of the IL farmlands, no helmets, gloves, goggles or any safety equipment we now use. We had a selection of bikes pass thru our household, a 58 Zundapp 500 and a 64 Norton Atlas both stick in my mind. The bug (as my Mom always called it) undoubtedly came from my father (remember, I m writing this on Father s day). My Dad was riding motorcycles long before I was a gleam in his eye, I have the original 1940 Illinois registration for his 1930 Henderson 4-cyl (VIN D-16507A) along with various pictures and programs from motorcycle races in Unfortunately I do not have any pictures this of bike or any of his motorcycles. He used to tell the story of trying to teach my Mom to ride, sitting on the back of that Henderson, heading down the highway in South Illinois Mom on the front, Dad perched behind her, when they entered their first turn. Mom, of course steered the bike into the turn instead of leaning, almost taking them off the road into a ditch. If Dad had not intervened, It would not be me writing this article! The first H-D I remember was his 1949 Harley- Davidson Hydra-Glide was the second year of the Panhead engine, and the first year for hydraulic forks. It was red/white with a foot-clutch and hand shift and Dad was an expert on operating that configuration, something that I never mastered. My first bike purchased was a 64 Yamaha 250. It was spring 1965, I was 16 and king of the road. That fall I moved up to a BSA 650, Mom decided I needed a bigger bike to be safer on the highway. Funny, Dad convinced Mom I should get a bigger motorcycle instead of a car for my senior year in high school, he said it was safer that way! Thinking back, Dad may have been right, when your yrs old you can get into much more trouble in a car if you catch my drift. I traded that BSA for a 64 Chevy when Karen and I were getting married, but many more motorcycles were too follow, BSA s and Harley-Davidsons. The first bike I remember riding was (I believe) a H-D 165cc two stroke he brought home. No lights or fenders & we d take off across the open fields VOLUME 12, ISSUE 7 PAGE 4

Safety Officer (cont d) My Dad sold that Hydra-Glide, his last motorcycle, in He was only 51. Poor health and a weak heart was to take him only 10 years later. Maybe if had kept that old Harley his health would have stayed better. But when I climb aboard any motorcycle, I have him to thank. Happy Birthday America!!! Miss you, Dad. Ride Safe, ride often. 6 Chapter Chaplain V I C T O R Y I S O U R S! The Fourth of July is a special day. On July 4, 1776 a group of brave men stepped up to the bar and put their life on the line for something they believed in. If they would have lost their bid for freedom, they would have been brought back to England and hanged. Without their victory, there would be no telling where the world would be today. As we celebrate their victory this July 4th, we should not forget March 4, It is a date of equal importance to our nation and indeed the world. A lasting victory was won on this date. A victory of intellect. A rare victory. So rare some historians maintain it has been accomplished only three times in history: Old Testament Israel, the Golden Age of Greece, and the era of emergence of the United States of America. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to approve a Virginia motion calling for separation from Britain. The dramatic words of this resolution were added to the closing of the Declaration of Independence. Two days later, on July 4, the declaration was formally adopted by 12 colonies after minor revision. New York approved it on July 19. On August 2, the declaration was signed. for five more years. Yet to come were the Patriot triumphs at Saratoga, the bitter winter at Valley Forge, the intervention of the French, and the final victory at Yorktown in In 1783, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris with Britain, the United States formally became a free and independent nation. March 4, 1789, is the date the Constitution of the United States of America became the supreme law of the nation. The Bible speaks of another victory. Some 2,000 years ago Jesus was put to death on a cross, was buried, and on the third day arose from the dead. This is VICTORY! Jesus was victorious over death. While we live in a free nation because of the sacrifice our founding fathers made, we can also be free from sin because of what Jesus did in our behalf. He paid the sin debt for you and me. The Bible says in Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. God has made a way for us to be free by simply placing our trust in His Son Jesus. If I can ever be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to call me. Eveline and I trust that you all had a great Fourth of July! May God Bless You and ride safely! Norman Schneller, Chaplain Those signing for the State of Georgia were: Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton. You will recognize their last names as having counties named after them. The American War for Independence would last VOLUME 12, ISSUE 7 PAGE 6

Shaun Mobley, Secretary Clayton County HOG Chapter Officers Meeting Minutes June 3, 2012 Meeting 2:25 pm June s officer meeting was held at the home of Paul Grimes. In Shaun s absence, Babs took minutes. Robert opened the meeting and announced that Bobby had resigned as Sr. Road Captain. Jesse Newcomer stepped up and agreed to assume the role for the remainder of Steve Rabideaux volunteered to keep up with the mileage program and the spreadsheets. Harriet went over the details of her I Don t Give A D Ride scheduled for June 9. Paul announced the Red, White, and BBQ rides for the month of July. Specifics will be in the July Newsletter. Steve Sullivan will lead the July 4 th Dale Moorefield Memorial ride that leaves from the square in McDonough. Stay tuned for the upcoming Charles Harrison memorial event. Tentatively scheduled for September 22. The ride to Gatlinburg is still on for the weekend of September 28. Rich mentioned putting something together for a safety briefing. We have many new riders and perhaps we can put on a class at or before a monthly meeting. Everyone agreed it would be a great idea to add a safety briefing to our monthly agenda. Stephanie is working on the Christmas party. Save the date (December 1, 2012) Details to follow Ed Levy suggested perhaps organizing a fund raiser to help raise some money for the Chapter. Meeting adjourned at 3:45. VOLUME 12, ISSUE 7 PAGE 7

Webmaster YOUR WEBSITE I wanted to take this opportunity to remind all Clayton County H.O.G. members to check the website for information regarding upcoming rides and events. It s really quite simple to do! Did you realize that once you access the website at that you re only a click away from viewing Rides/Events for the year? To view future months, click on the month listed in the upper left hand corner under Click here for the YAHOO calendar. This will take you to the current month where you can view information regarding an event. For example, if you click the arrow to the right of the month and go to the month of AUG 2012, you will see a ride leaving on the 16 th at 11am to the Smoky Mountain Rumble in Franklin, NC. To view more information on this ride, move your mouse over the highlighted event OR click on the name of the event. There you will find information for hotel reservations and the website. Another options is once you ve accessed the website, click on the RIDES/EVENTS tab on the left side. The rides/events items listed on this page are usually for the current month. Due to limited space, there is not enough room to list several months worth of rides. These are two important tools right at your fingertips while you re cruising around the internet. I also send out s as reminders on rides and the Wednesday night dinner rides. There is no longer a members only page. The purpose of that page was for members to login and download the newsletter. The newsletter is now ed out to all members so that page was removed. If you have any problems or questions concerning the website, please contact me at prglaze@bellsouth.net Happy surfing!
