1 ultneyville Yacht Club Signals from the Commodore Obladi Oblada. Life goes on Lennon and McCartney. I come bearing glad tidings but this column could have been written by any one of you. We met, we discussed and we voted. In many ways, this may be one of our finest hours. While our discussion and vote specifically pertained to purchase of a Race Committee boat, we made considerable headway toward something that, with some more practice, could come to resemble full valuation of Club assets - including physical/infrastructure and human/ service. Members, with a willingness to serve, are our most valuable asset. Terri Bolt (Chair) and the other members of the 2012 Nominating Committee (Kevin Bouwens, Kathy Fedick, Jane Hamilton and Russ alum) would like to talk with you about your interest filling a position on the 2013 Executive Committee. Over the next several months the YC Executive Committee will continue a Club-wide effort to establish and put forth a schedule for active deployment and full realization of these assets. In this effort, we expect a productive engagement with our Members and with the Cornwall Trust. Chris Densmore met with us at the Club on Saturday March 24 for a walkabout. The Trust has agreed to continue to work with us in 2012 on the following projects (priority): South Shore road (1); Demolition/Removal N11-N15 docks and Stabilization of Shoreline (2) ; Guest Dock Repairs (2-tie) ; Gravel North Shore arking Lot (4); Dead Tree Removal/stump grinding (5) ; Fill Gap in Corner South/East Walls eninsula (5- tie); Gravel eninsula arking Lot (7); Isolate North Shore Water Supply from eninsula (8). As we soldier on in this journey, it s important to understand a couple of things about the above projects. Dredging is not on the list. It just gets done. Individual projects come from a more extensive member generated list. The Executive Committee follows a process, set forth in our Lease, for establishing annual priorities. There is give and take, in both scope and funding, for projects. Our choices, no doubt, involve consideration of a long run vision for the Club and of devilish project details seemingly without limit. But, after all our trials and hard work, how about some well deserved respite? I look forward to joining you for the festivities of our official opening on Memorial Day weekend. Joie de vivre, as it were. 2 Notes from the Vice Commodore What a roller coaster ride mother nature has presented us. Fortunately we had perfect weather for Launch Day. Special thanks to Larry Rice (Zest), Stephanie Fitzpatrick (Libra), Cathy MacDonald (Windward Skye), Diane Davis (Journey), Sally Soule (Sea King) Donna Ecker (RiRa) and Jan Burcroff (Joie de Vivre) for lending a hand and providing great homemade food and hospitality for everyone who helped with the Launch. Great job ladies and gent! Like the first three on the north shore who ve already stepped their masts, we ve got to take those warm days when they come. The rest of the YC family is returning to the harbor day by day. So exciting to see the harbor filling up with boats in the water. We ve also had a crew of guys who launched the floating docks and on the Fleet Captain s Work Day when the channel marks were set. Over two dozen members showed up to pitch in. If you missed it, ask them about the social hour we had when their work was done. Music, food, some dance... Work, but fun. Thanks guys! And Marv Hill (returning new member), thanks for always being there to help! ahead, but it will be fun because as the Beatles sang, We get by with a little (lot of) help from our friends, which is what makes YC so special. Continental breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks will be provided. Our First Work Day is May 5 th (A-H) will be hosted by Cher Gray (Green Eyed Lady). The Second Work Day (I-Z) which I will be heading up is May 12 th, and I do have a little project I can use help with there. Let me know if you ll be helping with a side dish or baked goods to share. Did I tell you that in my earlier life I worked at the family s restaurant and come from a large family when food was always on the table? And most always, sweet stuff! We have a very busy month of May coming up with getting our boats, the grounds and docks ready. We have lots of improvement and maintenance work Having fun at the Commodore's Review. Things don't always go as expected. Tai an in serious need of the season's blessings or an artist's way of flying colors? Old club merchandise is being cycled out. One per membership unit. If you did not receive your pick while on the early work crews or launch, come see me during lunch break on Work Day 1 or 2. LAKE SOUNDINGS is published monthly for YC members, February through December. Letters to the Editor, suggestions, commentaries, wit, memoirs, tales, seaworthy tips and maritime art are welcome. Submissions will be edited and published as space, temperament and accommodations allow ultneyville Yacht Club. We re going green! No more plastic table covers! Keep any eye out for some great blues! Also, It s likely I can use some help on the 2 nd Workday, May 12 th since I won t be able to do too much. ultneyville Yacht Club is on Facebook. 4 The Rear Commodore looks around... Meanwhile, Back on Shore In assuming my new role, I have been continually reminded of what I already knew: that our club has a large number of very talented people, quietly working to make sure that the harbor infrastructure and club assets continue to serve our needs. From sounding the harbor, to water and electric service, and forklift maintenance, and everything in between, there are talented, qualified people giving their time and energy to ensure that our club keeps running. There is real ownership here, and that is a key strength of our club. So, in my efforts to catch up with this moving train, I am initially inspired by Jack Kerouac, who wrote in Big Sur (and I paraphrase here): we make lunch, we look around, we make a great effort to realize everything is the same.' And that works for me initially, but, in the long run, keeping things the same is not good enough. We must continually improve in order to provide the kind of experience that our current and prospective members need and want. To that end, I plan to continue the great work and planning of my predecessor, outlined in the March issue of this newsletter. Executing on these plans is a matter of priorities, and matching available funds to projects, and then managing those projects to completion at or below the estimate. Every dollar saved on a project is a dollar that can be put to work elsewhere. As I begin to work with the other members of the EC, the Board of Governors, and the Cornwall Trust, to understand the availability and flow of funding, and set priorities for the larger projects, we must not forget the club workdays, where significant, incremental improvement is accomplished by we, the members of the club. Under the leadership of Stu MacDonald and Joe Davis, there are many projects planned, and supplies are on order. The Key Dates for these are: May 5 th First Club Workday May 12 th Second Club Workday So, please arrive on time and ready to work Additionally, I understand that the harbor soundings are complete and Ron Hilgert has distilled these into dredging estimates, which we will be reviewing with the EC and Trust in order to plan the July dredging operations. Finally, thanks to all who have welcomed me, and I continue to appreciate the help, observations and suggestions, and most of all, your efforts to keep our club operating and improving. Tim YC.rear.commodore@gmail.com

5 2012 Launch ictures Thanks to Natasha Labelle as the newest official club photographer for the launch pictures (although I explained to her that there really isn t an official position like that, but we really appreciate pictures for the newsletter!) Earl Fleet Captain s Report It s so great to see that the club is bustling with activity again. The joy of messing about with boats, what could be better? Once again I am the last one to get an article to our Editor Earl; he fires many warning shots via to let me know that the time is short. But I never seem to be able to find the time & now with the boat in the water and a list of things to do as long as the boat it gets even worse. It s going to be a great season this year, many exciting announcements in the near future, please watch the Racing Board in the club house for more details as they become available. The Committee has been put together to proceed with finding a suitable RC Boat and are hard at work. We will keep you posted on their progress. Also it doesn t look like we will have the boat in time for the season opener so I will be RO for a few more weeks. Last month I commented on how vulnerable the channel marks are to weather and Mother Nature showed us exactly what I was talking about, three of the six are now off station after last week s Nor Easter. So again remember, use the range marks on land as a primary means of entering & exiting the harbour. Fair Winds, Jon
